MAS to hand domestic routes to AK??

Recommended Posts

According to Channel News Asia, MAS would probably concentrate on flights to major cities - Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu - and give the rest to AirAsia.

That's plain riddiculous...if MAS handed them all over could they still being named as "National Carrier"??? And does that mean I won't get to fly KBR-KUL v.v. with MAS again???? :( :(

this was reported in the star as well. im sure tony & co would be happy if this happened.

but imho the two airlines cater for two different markets. no more choice. now its all no frills or all frills....

This is old news - a week old. Nothing firmed up yet, still being planned.

This possible policy change is probably holding up orders to replace MH's 734 and F50.

I have my doubts on the report on "EXCEPT bki, kch, pen, lgk", you know lah this clueless reporters. MAS's domestic operations will most likely be changed but probably not as drastic as it appears in the report. My guess at this stage would be, the number of domestic flights between domestic points operated by MAS will be reduced, and to make up for it these flights will be operated by AK instead.

No need to panic guys B)

Very complicated issue. difficult to resolve. though possible, there should be certain degree of compromise btw MH, PMB, AK, MOF/MOT.

So....on a light-hearted note, here it goes:-

MH: We can let go some routes.

PMB: Suits me. May be somebody else can do a better and profitable job. Our objective is to reduce our outflow to cover MH's domestic losses.

MOF/MOT: Tony, wanna take some routes aaa...?

AK (Tony): Can sir but i would only fly to TGG once a day and KBR the most twice a day.

MOF/MOT: Well, we suggest you take all. If you want TGG, 3 or 4 flights a day must remain.

AK: But then we could incur losses.

MOF: Tony, unfortunately your idea may defeat Government objective. We'll see how we could assist to minimise the downside.

MH: Yeah whaat, we have been incurring losses also. So Tony, it cannot go the way you prefer all the time.

AK (Tony): But we are listed company. We have obligation to shareholders!

MH: So do we!

AK(Tony): Then if that is the case, gimme one of your 3 flights to LHR laaaa.

MH: WHAT????!!!!! Nonsense......we only talk here on domestic route. You are swaying away.....

MOF/MOT: Eh Tony.....are you making money?

AK (Tony): Yes.....

MOF/MOT: So shouldn't be much of an issue then. You take all domestic route which i am sure your cost is low. You could lower cost better than others. Yes, you would incur losses only on certain sectors. On consolidated basis, you still win with higher profit because we talk on volume here. ...more sectors.

AK (Tony): Yeah, possible.....but there is no guarantee..

MOF/MOT, MH, PMB: Wei Tony, where got certainty in business waaaaaaannnn???!!!!

negotiation will go on and on and on................and on and on..........

yes gavin,

the government will have absolute say. of course govt is sensitive towards the plight of MH and AK when it comes to losses. and it is in the interest of the govt to support both airlines. at the same time the govt also has the social obligation at national level. so it is not easy . i guess MH and AK will have to compromise somehow. then issues can be resolved.

by the way, govt still has one golden share in MH which means that MH should refer to govt for any major decision. for e.g....2 years ago, when MH managed to find the formula to restructure, it sought government blessings.

In fact, the Gov now has more than that just one golden share - it is the largest shareholder through Khazanah - MH was virtually renationalised in the restructuring and is a good MBA study for a failure of privatisation.

Btw, press reports suggested that struggling Valuair has offered AK to take up a substantial equity stake in the company. Don't get too excited but this is just one of the many options Valuair is evaluating to ensure survival going forward. If AK takes up the offer, it may end up having a base in S'pore through its acquired associate (just like AWAIR, Thai AK).

I'll give Valuair another year before it bites the dust if nothing major happens to ensure its viability.

With AK having a hub in SIN, other LCC wouldn't stand a chance against the might of AK. Isn't that what Tony always dream of? Set up a hub MNL then they'd get all 4 corners of SE Asia covered.

wow...AK and Valuair....that is something new to me.

Have to go to SIN soon in order to take some "remembrance" pictures, before they, indeed, bite the dust

How's Tiger doing overthere ?

Just OK but not too great either. What these carriers lack is a cash-generating protected domestic market - like AK's Malaysian domestics. This has proved to be AK's cash-generating buffer, untouched by competition. I'm sure it will be a free-for-all should the M'sian domestic market be opened to the S'pore-based LCCs.

Realistically, Yes...subject to one of the following conditions being fulfilled;

(1) TonyF. goes bonkers;

(2) one-way min. airfare for a TO ride is RM250.

Wouldn't a Twin Otter flight by default be no-frills - unless TF comes out with some innovative measures to take the concept to another level !! :D

Hope MAS would not be stupid to give the rest to AK  . They are still many people want to fly with MAS, even just to some small towns like TWU, SDK, SBU, LBU etc :) .

I just hope that IPH isn't axed off the list. Don't want to take a 3.5 hrs long bus trip to KLIA just to catch my flight. Already its quite bad to have to spend 6.5 hours doing nothing at KLIA. Gone were the days when we had an evening flight around 6.30 pm to KLIA. This flight connects perfectly for Australia/NZ, Middle East and Europe flights.
