Pothole Forces KK Airport Runway To Close For Three Hours

KOTA KINABALU, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Kota Kinabalu International Airport runway was closed for three hours Friday after a pothole was found on the airstrip, leaving flights delayed and some 2,000 passengers stranded.

The closure of the runway from noon to 3 pm affected about 20 Malaysia Airlines flights and a Dragon Air service.

"Ten of our inbound flights and another 10 outbound flights were delayed by about one to two hours," said Malaysia Airlines Sabah Area Manager Mohd Nazeri Abdul Karim.

He said most of the affected flights were domestic while one was a flight to Hong Kong and another from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

Among the passengers affected was Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin whose flight from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu was delayed by about three hours.

This is not a new thing, the airport has been closed a few times before due to potholes on the runway. It will remain closed until they managed to patch up the spot.

Not all pothole will close the runway, only the bigger ones. The smaller ones they will not repair immediately, but this is the major cause of "ground turbulence" in BKI.

At least in this case I'm quite happy to hear that a top politician was delayed as well. The people has suffered far too long at BKI due to reasons like poor surface, no parallel taxiway, insufficient parking bay, small terminal.....

When, or will they build a second runway as well as some other expansion plans for BKI?

BTW what material they use to construct runway? Cement or tarmac?

I seriously doubt the "bless" part. Wouldn't bet on it - pardon the "pun-t."...oops, that's two gambles in one go.

No one uses cenemt to build runway or roads dude.

Concrete at the bottom, asphaltic concrete at the top. Probably 2 layers of asphalt. Those bigger with larger size stones. Apron then, could be concrete only.

Radzi,

What happened if touchdown right on the pot bole? Tyre burst?

BKI airport's plan for upgrading is in already. The funds for airport are federal funds not state funds. Heard that 8th M'sia plane money habis sudah. Whatever it is, teh drawing is already out for the upgrade. Hang in there guys.
