Prima Air

LANGKAWI: Shipping tycoon Tan Sri Halim Mohammad, founder and executive chairman of formerly listed Halim Mazmin Bhd, yesterday launched a new charter airline, making Langkawi, Kedah its base of operations.

Dubbed Prima Air, the new airline will off er charter service and aircraft maintenance support at the Langkawi International Airport.Halim said he had made an initial investment of RM20 million in Prima Air Sdn Bhd, which started flight operations with its fi rst Cessna Grand Caravan EX 208B turboprop.

“The new airline offers point-to-point travelling for passengers to get to destinations that are deemed uneconomical or un-suitable for commercial flights to land,” he told reporters at the launch of the new airline and the groundbreaking ceremony for the development of a water theme park by Langkawi International Sdn Bhd here yesterday.

For starters, the new airline will fly from Langkawi to Penang, Alor Setar, Ipoh, Pangkor, Subang, and also destinations in South Thailand, including Hatyai, Krabi and Phuket. Eventually, Halim said he plans to convert the Cessna turboprop into an amphibian aircraft so that it can also land on water.

On competition with other airlines such as AirAsia, Firefly and Malindo Air, Halim said: “We are complementing the other airlines. We want to work with AirAsia, FireFly and such, so that passengers can get to their end destinations that these airlines cannot reach. We also want to work with hotels and travel agen-cies.”Halim said there is no target set for the airline to break even although he expects Prima Air to operate a fleet of three to four aircraft within two years.

In the old days of chartered flights, tickets are definitely lower cost than those of scheduled flights. But nowadays, it is a free market. So dunno what the fares will be like.

Is there a provision for commercial fare-paying-passenger flights on single engine aircraft, IFR in the Malaysian aviation regulations?

Or will the flights be strictly limited to VFR daylight?

It seems that this small carrier is resuming its operation. Prima Air is offering direct flight from Alor Setar to Langkawi and vice-versa with a 1-way ticket fare is RM180 per pax.

Anyone here dare to fly with them?

Getting a bowl of noodles and a teh tarik while waiting for your boarding pass? Even AA Flagship Check-in/LH FCT/BA First Wing do not offer such luxuries!
