MAS Enrich Frequent Flyer Program

I'm feeling really frustrated about MH Enrich. Here's a letter I've written and will post to MAS on Monday!

RE: Claiming of previous Enrich miles for MH XXXXXXX

With the regards on the above, I would like to claim miles from 3 of my previous flights. I understand that claiming of previous Enrich Miles is not permitted but I would like to put my case forward for special consideration. This will also affect my decision whether I should continue flying MAS or switch to another airline.

Prior to my flight to London (MH2 04 Nov 05) from KLIA, I have enquired for Enrich membership at the check-in counter and was then directed by the check-in crew to go to the MAS Customer Care service in the building itself for the application. When I asked for an application form at the Customer Care office, I was told by your staff that they have run out of stock, which I found rather outrageous. I then enquired if I can claim my Enrich Miles later, she firmly told me that it was alright and the procedure is by submitting my boarding pass (and she did not mention about air ticket – which I later found out is required when claiming missing miles!).

With that assurance in mind, I then applied for my membership online at MAS website. This is when my true nightmare started. I was sure that I had submitted the form and reached the confirmation screen. I did not receive ANY reply or any email whatsoever for the next 2 – 3 weeks. So I decided to call up MAS Call Centre from London to see if they have received my application. I was told by the officer that they didn’t receive anything and was told to re-apply. I then re-apply online and ensured that I reached the confirmation screen and I had on purposely pressed submitted a few times to ensure that it will go through. But again, after 3 weeks, I did not receive anything at all. I called the MAS Call Centre again, and was told they didn’t receive my application! At this point I am very frustrated, but continue to fly with MAS on the assurance that my Enrich Miles will be accrued. By this time I had already flew MAS 3 times (KUL-LHR)! On my THIRD ATTEMPT to apply online, I finally received my membership on 5th March, before my flight back to KL (MH3 25th March).

Now I am requesting that for my previous 3 flights Enrich Miles to credit to my account on the above basis where: -

1) I was given assurance by MAS staff (MAS Customer Care Office in KLIA) that miles can be credited before membership

2) I have attempted to apply for membership 3 times, and only on the third I got my membership

I hope I will receive a reply as soon as possible before I make my decision to continue flying MAS or to switch to SIA for their KrisFlyer programme. Not only their fares are cheaper, they offer better Miles as I have Citibank Credit Card Reward Points and in future with the American Express SIA Krisflyer Gold Card. At the same time, I have already applied for the membership via their website, and was given my membership number IMMEDIATELY after I had clicked my submit button. But before I decide to switch to SIA, I would like to see if I should continue to fly with MAS, of course with the below flights’ miles credited to my account, I will continue to fly with MAS as I have a reason to.

Below are the 3 flights that I hope you will grant Enrich Miles to my above account. I have also enclosed my boarding tickets and pass.

Class Flight No Date Time

Y MH 0002 04 Nov 05 2355

Y MH 0001 25 Jan 06 2200

Y MH 0002 11 Feb 06 2355

I really hope that I am given the incentive to continue flying MAS, being a Malaysian and wanting to see this company continue flying high and Going Beyond Expectations.

Thanks,

MH XXXXXX

Just noted that there's a slight improvement in the Enrich Miles Programme. Looks like my Y fare tickets will give 100% of the miles flown, compared to 70% on the previous banding.

Dear Quik

Do not make conclusion that fast. As far as I'm experienced of, the accrual points will still be given to you eventhough at the point of travel with no Enrich card, say six months ago, they would still give you points, subject you have all the ticket snubs and boarding passes with you. It happened to me but then again I stormed their HQ just to hand over the application form. At that time, I brought with me the ticket snubs and boarding passes just in case and guess what, the lovely personnel there said quote "well..give us the snubs and everything but don't expect to get it back.."unquote. It was a worth trade-off B)

In all, just be nice and they'll be even more nice to you. All the best,

Hi Azrin,

I was just very frustrated with the whole process of trying to get my Enrich membership! Imagine you had done it for 4 times, yet didn't receive anything! I'm now pondering to either switch to SIA or continue with MAS. While I really want to fly MAS again (being Malaysian and all) but this kinda disservice by MAS just puts me off. It's frustrating lah...! I hope they will give me my Enrich Miles lah, I wanna get my Business Class upgrade OK! :p

KrisFlyer's programme seems much better, and I'm now torn between the two. This will definitely depend on whether MAS decides to gimme my Enrich Miles back!

KrisFlyer's programme seems much better, and I'm now torn between the two. This will definitely depend on whether MAS decides to gimme my Enrich Miles back!

Quik - I recognise ur nickname from Flyertalk. I'm QF009 over there. Yes Enrich is terrible but if your carrier of choice is MH and you wish to do things like upgrade on ur MH flights, then unfortunately you're stuck with Enrich.

You may wish to check out other programs that award miles for MH flights should you decide that you wish to fly on MH. Some, like Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, award both status and redeemable miles, even in economy unlike Enrich.

Should you decide to switch to SQ - note that there are more than 19 programs on which you can earn SQ redeemable/award miles on. Krisflyer is only slightly better than Enrich in terms of earn/burn ratio, and may be good if you wish to pursue upgrades on SQ. But as KF Elite Gold is really no better than Star Alliance Gold status on any other airline, especially at SIN and KUL where *G/KF EG doesn't get you into the Silver Kris Lounges, I would advise looking at another Star Alliance program to earn SQ miles on. The only other additional benefit of KF EG I can think of is it allows you to enter the Virgin Clubhouses even when flying SQ - they're much better than the SKLs at places like LHR and HKG. Remember the golden rule of this game - the program you earn miles on doesn't necessarily have to be the program of the airline you're flying. For example, when I flew on QF/BA/CX all my miles were earned with AAdvantage and my AA Platinum status allowed me access to all oneworld sapphire benefits. Now I'm flying SQ but all my miles are credited to LH Miles and More.

Please visit the *A thread in FT if you wish to do a comparison between the *A programs, but the general guidelines are as follows:

- Occassional long haul economy travel (eg LHR-SIN-KUL) - AC*G can be achieved with 35 000 status miles in 1 calendar year. Miles do not expire as long as you have activity every 3 years.

- Frequent economy travel - TG*G can be achieved with 50 000 status miles within 1 calendar year or 80 000 status miles over 2 calendar years. TG*G status lasts for 2 years. Miles expire after a certain time though. Alternatively, UA*G can be achieved with 50 000 status miles within 1 calendar year. Miles do not expire as long as activity occurs at least every 3 years. Status lasts for a year, but benefits are more generous than TG*G, plus the earn/burn ratio on UA is extremely good. Just 20 000 miles is required for the cheapest award.

- Frequent travel in premium cabins - LH M+M is your best bet. 300% award/status miles for travel in F, 200% for J. 100 000 status miles to achieve Senator status within a calendar year - but status lasts for 2 years. A great feature of LH is its upgrade vouchers for Senators can be used on lots of other *A airlines including SQ.

I don't know what your personal circumstances are in detail so its best to study Blondebomber's list carefully in the *A FAQ sticky on FT.

If you wish to fly both MH and SQ - go Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. IIRC, miles don't expire either. Plus status on Virgin allows you to enter the Virgin Clubhouses (arguably the best lounges in the world) even when flying SQ.

And if you do fly Raffles and First class on SQ - don't forget about the double dipping feature of SQ PPS. SQ PPS Club can be achieved by flight sectors - you can credit miles to another FFP like LH or VS, and credit the sectors to SQ. Read the posts from several folks on FT who have double dipped their way to SQ PPS status and for eg, AC Super Elite status, despite a very limited presence on AC. :D

Bear in mind though that there will never be the perfect FFP. You just have to pick one that suits you most adequately. Good luck. :)

Nothing new "quik!".

I had similar issues with them before and even as recent as two weeks ago, I wrote to them (Customer Services) and got no reply till today. However, if you are lucky enough, then you may get 20,000 miles in your credit for complaining, only if you complain and annoy them enough will they do it. :p

So, all your special request and also the threat to switch to another airline may not work after all, but then again, be optimistic and see what happens. They certainly need a lot of training on Customer Services !!!!!

Hi Keith T,

Thanks for the tips. I'm actually very new to this whole FFP thingie and I partly blame myself for not researching thoroughly before I choose my prefered airline. MH was automatically my choice at first because it's our national carrier and I wanted to support them, naturally.

However, my dealings with them haven't been the smoothest, and many times it has managed to drive me away from them. Frustrated lah! Now that I actually consider to fly SIA, I felt like a "traitor" :p

My ultimate goal of getting this Enrich points is - to fly Business class :p Am not too keen on redeeming return tickets because those I can actually afford to purchase myself, just that Business Class is something I can't really buy! Unless of course if my company starts to fly us in Business :p

Here's my flight pattern, I fly between KUL and LHR every 10 weeks. Since Enrich was only awarding 70% of the actual miles for Y tickets, I decided that it was not worth collecting. SIA was a naturally an alternative as they give 100% miles flown, and when you are granted Silver status, a bonus of 25% miles. And when you purchase air ticket via their website you will earn double miles for each USD spent (using their AMEX KF Gold). So I'm actually TORN right now, though I'm very inclined to fly SIA.

I'll check out the thread that you mentioned, however, am having difficulty locating it within FT threads!

Well I certainly don't mind another 20K free miles! That would automatically grant me a free upgrade to Golden Class on my trip back to KL! :p I will send this out on Monday, express mail!

I'll check out the thread that you mentioned, however, am having difficulty locating it within FT threads!

Go to 'miles and points', click on 'star alliance', click on the faq which has been stickied. Scroll till you see comparisons.

And you really have to get over the concept of 'national airlines.' Just pick the one you feel offers the best value and suits ur needs. For some perspective, Singaporeans comprise less than half of the active posters at the SQ Forum at FT. ;) But this is just unique to SQ I think (and maybe TG and CX) - as I also follow the QF and BA threads and they're all pretty aussie/UK based.

Sounds like your best bet is going with Krisflyer for the purposes of being able to upgrade on SQ flights, as well as being able to get KF Elite Gold which is doable flying just economy unlike Enrich status. If you do a return trip between KUL and LHR every 10 weeks, that should put u in good stead of getting enough points to upgrade. The qualifying period for KF EG is a 12 month period from the date of ur enrolment, unlike 1 April to 31 Mar of the following year like previously. This new feature makes KF more flexible than other FFPs like LH which insist on a calendar yr (ie 1st Jan to 31st Dec). Throw in some transatlantic flights on VS along with the usual LHR-SIN-KUL flighta that you have to do anyway and you're on ur way there! :)

Avoid the following fare classes on SQ: G, I, N, O, Q, R, T, V and X. Can't remember which are el cheapo fares and which are award fare buckets - but if your itinerary features any of these - it renders the entire itinerary uneligible for mileage accrual! So be suspicious of any extremely cheap fares. Having said that I think the Saver fares from Europe to South East Asia are usually booked in W which accrues 100% on KF.

If you guys Malaysian, go ahead use Enrich, but use Alliance card is much better, lots of reward/partners, most of Enrich partners can only be found in Malaysia-very limited. Plus they have expiration date.................that's the worst part =@ !!!

agree with you,Seth.Even when a new member received the enrich card, they're not giving the permanent membership card,it's a temporary membership card made out of paper! Now my card is nearly torn out.I'm so angry about this! :angry2:

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the heads up. Will check it out.

It's true that I should go for the best deal. But ya know, when I see a MAS plane fly through, or anything that has MAS logo on it, I just feel weak all over again :p Patriotic mah...

But at the end of the day, I should go for the best service. I might just do it (my heart has already actually decided!). The flights that I have booked on are W class, and I had seek confirmation that it's 100% miles awarded, which is great! In no time I should be getting Elite, and get another 25% more.

Hi there P K Kok,

Why not you just join NW's WorldPerks ? The miles accrued won't expire as long as you have at least one 1 flight with them or their partners every 3 years.

However you can no longer earn miles on MH domestic flight effective mid-2004 <_ src="%7B___base_url___%7D/uploads/emoticons/default_mad.gif" alt=""> and also in booking class G, L, V.

I think his intention was to use FF points to upgrade on MH or SQ when he flies LHR-KUL. NW Worldperks will not allow upgrading on MH. It does however offer upgrades on CO, KL and NW, handy when flying on those transatlantic flights. Neither do miles earned on MH flights count towards status on Worldperks.

And surely MH GCC and SQ Raffles Class are more desirable options to spend miles on. :) [sorry Pieter! :D]

A trial in Business Class on KLM (KUL-AMS-LHR v.v.) or Air France (SIN-CDG-LHR v.v.) are not bad either for PeeKay when he would have joined NW Worldperks :)

I feel I've to correct an error I made-

In a post above I mentioned that e-upgrade vouchers gained by being LH Senator can be used on SQ, that's incorrect. The vouchers are good only for upgrades on LH/OS/LO/UA/LX. LH miles, on the other hand, can be used to upgrade on SQ and NH.

So to anyone who acted on my erraneous advice and embarked on the EQM-accruing journey to LH Senator status, I truly apologize for the misinformation.

I thought about joining Enrich, but then I realized that you can collect MH miles on other programmes. In the end I just stayed with Swiss Travelclub because I can also accrue MH miles (though not status miles).

However, when Swiss joined Miles and More, I do not know if I can still accrue MH miles. The codeshare flight ZRH-KUL on LX/MH is still on, which is the reason why we could collect MH miles in the first place. However, MH is not a partner airline of Miles & More. I also cannot find out anymore if I could still use LX miles to upgrade on MH. If we can, then this is a nice workaround for Miles&More, i.e., joining LX instead of LH.

Also Keith, requirement for Senator status with LH is 130k miles. With LX it is 100k miles. Why the difference?

Requirement for Miles and More Senator status is 130k only for people living in Germany. It's one common M+M program for LH/OS/LO/LX with exactly the same terms and conditions. You just get a different branded card if u happen to live in the countries where the other M+M airlines are based, eg LX M+M for people in Switzerland, OS M+M for Austria etc. Otherwise you get the LH card, like for me in Australia. If you move to Germany your re-qualification requirement for Sen automatically changes to 130k, and back to 100k if you move out of Germany. The cool thing is the airline logo on ur card changes along with ur residency if you live in an M+M airline hub - so if you want to collect the different cards you know what to do. ;)

Most unfortunately the terms of the Swiss Travel Club do not get carried over to M+M. As MH is not an M+M partner, you can't use M+M miles to upgrade on MH.

I just have a habit of referring to the Sen status as LH Senator for some reason (maybe cause the program is administered by LH)... the correct term should be M+M Senator.

Also another thing about M+M you have to be wary of is LH's very aggressive policy of keeping revenue inhouse. If you try to redeem an award on another carrier like SQ over the phone (which you have to do as online redemption only applies to the M+M airlines), persist even though they'd try very hard to convince you to go on LH/LX/OS/LO.

I'd definitely join KrisFlyer - but I may fly another 2 flights on MH just to redeem all my Enrich points, GCC!

Good on ya - enjoy GCC! :) I only got to be on GCC once and the experience was fantastic - should be even better with the new seats.
