Yusoff 1 Report post Posted July 27, 2008 This is hilarious: Avianca F50 at Popayan, ATC gone out for lunch By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Jul 25th 2008 20:05Z, last updated Friday, Jul 25th 2008 20:05Z An Avianca Fokker 50, flight AV9241 from Bogota to Popayan (Colombia), needed to circle for 15 minutes while arriving at Popayan, because they could not establish radio contact with the tower. Just when the crew decided to divert, the tower controller responded, now clearing the airplane to land at its intended destination. The tower controller had gone to lunch believeing, there'd be no airplane to handle - nobody had told him about the incoming flight. Normally the tower is operated by four controllers, but due to staff shortages one had to be moved to another airport, one was on holiday and two were making 12 hours shifts necessitating breaks for food, the director of Aeronáutica Civil said. :D

Khaled 2 Report post Posted July 28, 2008 Well, another story at our country,it happened about 2 years ago at Bintulu airport. Only difference was that somebody committed suicide in the control tower. So nobody was allowed to enter the area. Not sure whether any aircraft diverted or not. Do you have any more of the jucier details ? I'm sure the DCA cannot be faulted for not having contingency plans under such circumstances
