Singapore Plans to Build Terminal 4 at Changi

Recommended Posts

Aerobridges are only something that passengers love.

LCCs love airports that charge low fees. Cutting aerobridges will mean fees are lower. Since LCCs operate lots of flights, cost savings are significant enough.

Now that SIN has a big enough LCC in T4, I wonder if AK/FD/QZ will use this new terminal?

Firefly To Operate Out Of Changi Airport's Terminal 2 From Sept 25, 2012

March 07, 2012 18:49 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (Bernama) -- Community airline, Firefly, will operate out of Terminal 2 at Changi Airport, Singapore, from Sept 25, 2012 due to the closure of the Budget Terminal.

In a statement today, Firefly assured passengers that it was working with Changi Airport Group to ensure the transition would be seamless.

"A webpage detailing information on the move would be set up at fireflyz.com.my nearer to the date of the move.

"Passengers can also email customer care@fireflyz.com.my to obtain clarification," it said.

Firefly said those who had purchased seats on flights departing Singapore from Sept 25 onwards would not have to pay additional passenger charges for travel out of Terminal 2.

"However, those who purchase seats on flights departing Singapore from March 9, 2012 for travel on Sept 25, 2012 onwards will pay total passenger charges of S$28," it said.

It said the relocation of operations would enable better connectivity to other airlines as Terminal 2 was linked to Terminal 1 and 3 by a series of inter-terminal travellators and Skytrains.

What will Singapore's new Terminal 4 look like?

By Mavis Toh on March 8, 2012 3:47 PM

Last week, Singapore's Changi Airport Group announced that it'll be tearing down the country's Budget Terminal to build a new, bigger terminal in its place.

While the terminal will still not have aerobridges, it will be able to handle widebody aircraft that long-haul low-cost players like Scoot will be operating. It will also have more facilities, and even medium to high-end retailers and food outlets to make it more upscale and attractive.

Hence the word 'budget' will also be dropped from its name - Terminal 4.

For those who remember, when the Budget Terminal first opened its doors in 2006, not everyone was supportive and impressed. It was rather sparsely furnished and Singaporeans used to the comforts of Changi's terminals found the differences stark. Others complained about long walks to the aircraft.

But still, the low-cost industry grew and barely two years later, the terminal was expanded to handle 7 million passengers annually.

So when news broke that a new terminal for low-cost carriers was coming up, many were excited that they'll soon be able to have a better airport experience, even when they are flying low-cost.

Others however, were concerned that a new terminal means higher charges and questioned why can't a terminal for LCCs just stay simple.

So, it'll be interesting to see the new Terminal 4 when it comes up, and how passengers will take to it. Afterall, Changi has to live up to its reputation and also do its best to stay ahead of the competition.

Just nearby in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airports is building the world's largest low-cost terminal. Klia2 is expected to be ready by April 2013 and be able to handle 33 million passengers annually.

So finally its time for Budget Terminal to close down. Last flight scheduled to be at tonight 2am.

I will definitely miss this terminal, as I had been using it quite a bit, linking me to and from home.

And I think my most expensive budget carrier ticket was purchased from this very terminal. A S$300 for a one way TR flight back to KCH, cause I idiotically missed by AK flight. :sorry:

So long Budget Terminal! Looking forward to flying those budget carrier from T2 and also even more looking forward to the new T4 in the near future (:

A not-very-nice iconic 'Boarding Gates' picture I took during my last departure out of Budget Terminal, bound for HKT, in June.

Budget Terminal closes, low-cost carriers operate from Terminal 2

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Budget Terminal entered its final night of operations on Monday.

It has seen 18 million passengers and 150,000 flights pass through over its six-year lifespan.

Taking its place will be Terminal Four, with construction slated to begin next year and expected to be ready by 2017.

Signs were up at the Budget Terminal informing passengers of the closure.

The last flight out will be at 2am on Tuesday.

Thereafter, low-cost carriers will operate from Changi Airport's Terminal Two.

The facility for budget flights was conceived to cater to the growing popularity of low-cost carriers in the region.

Singapore's low-cost airline hub commenced operations on 26 March 2006.

In less than a decade, it had to make way for the building of Changi Airport's fourth full-fledged terminal.

Prior to that, the emergence of more budget carriers in Asia prompted Singapore to dedicate a facility to feed growing demand for cheap flights.

The terminal had a no-frills layout - with basic amenities and none of the famed fancy facilities found in other parts of Singapore's airport.

But within two years of opening, rapid growth in the low-cost carrier market pushed the need for more upgrades.

On 6 March 2008, former Second Minister for Transport Lim Hwee Hua, was quoted as saying, "We will be expanding the Budget Terminal from its current capacity of 2.7 million passengers per annum to 7 million passengers per annum at an estimated cost of 10 million dollars."

Completed in eight months, the expansion gave the facility more check-in counters and boarding gates. But passenger loads continued growing.

In 2011, the last full year of operations, the complex handled 4.6 million travellers.

The new terminal taking its place will cater to continued growth of air traffic at Changi Airport and help further strengthen Singapore's air hub status.

Anyone else has any other sentiments towards Singapore's Budget Terminal?

Construction of Changi Airport's T4 to begin
By CNA | 8 February 2013 Friday | 1439 hrs

SINGAPORE: Construction of Changi Airport's Terminal 4 (T4) is expected to begin soon, with a total estimated budget of S$1.28 billion.

S$600 million is set aside for the construction of a two-storey building at the old Budget Terminal site. It will have a gross floor area of about 160,000 square metres.

The remaining S$680 million will be for the construction of additional parking stands, supporting airfield infrastructure, security requirements, specialised airport systems, ancillary buildings and road and drainage works.

In a media statement released on Friday, Changi Airport Group said T4 will be designed with the flexibility to meet the operational needs of both regional full service and low-cost carriers.

T4 will primarily handle narrow body aircraft and be designed to enable quick turnaround of flights.

The transfer of passengers and baggage between T4 and the other terminals will also be provided for.

In terms of feel and ambience, T4 will be comparable to Terminals 1 and 2.

Unlike the Budget Terminal, T4 will have aerobridges at its boarding gates.

Departure and arrival immigration control and pre-boarding security screening will be centralised for more efficient deployment of manpower and equipment.

T4 will have more kiosks for self check-in, self bag-tagging and self bag-drops.

Bag sorting at T4 will be fully automated. The baggage handling system will be equipped with the latest technology to enable heavy and odd-sized bags to be handled with ease even by older workers.

The number of aircraft parking stands will also be increased.

A 38-hectare land plot south of Terminal 3, which houses the airport nursery and reservoir, will be converted into an aircraft parking area to house 17 narrow-body and nine wide-body aircraft stands.

An overhead vehicular bridge across Airport Boulevard will be built to enable buses and other airport vehicles to move from T4 to the aircraft stands.

Major drainage works, including the construction of a new reservoir, will be undertaken to prevent flooding in the event of a heavy downpour.

A new road will be built to facilitate outgoing traffic from T4 onto the East Coast Parkway.

A multi-storey car park with spaces for 1,200 vehicles will also be built next to the terminal.

T4 is expected to be ready in 2017.

It will be really crowded with T4 coming online. They need that third runway

If Terminal 4 is at the former Budget Terminal, opening up the 3rd runway will not solve all the congestion.

Is the terminal interconnected like how T1-T3 is on the airside?
