Contradicting news! Quoting yeadrian from another thread:

From NST - Business, 15 July 2008

DATUK Seri Idris Jala is set to stay on as the managing director and chief executive officer of Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) for another three years. His existing contract expires at the end of this year. Staying on means that he will have to steer the company through what he calls a perfect storm: oil prices have hit record highs, the global economy is slowing and competition is getting tougher.

Idris said the fresh contract talks between the government, its investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd and MAS directors have been ongoing. "We have reached a mutual agreement," he told reporters after delivering a lecture organised by the alumni body of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang yesterday.

The 50-year-old turnaround specialist graduated from USM in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in development/management.

There has been little to suggest that Idris would not keep his job after changing the fortunes of the national carrier.

Idris was appointed to his current position in December 2005 after MAS posted two successive quarters of losses. It lost RM1.3 billion that year.

MAS now has RM5 billion in cash and it intends to reduce costs by RM630 million this year. It plans to buy second-hand planes from financially troubled airlines. "The airline business is expected to go into turmoil over the next few years and we are hoping for distressed sales of aircraft," he added.

He told reporters that although MAS is holding off its option to order 20 B737-800 aircraft, there would be no change to the orders for the 20 ATR 72-500 turbo propeller planes the company placed last year. MAS' wholly-owned subsidiaries Firefly and MASwings are each set to get 10 new ATRs, which are currently being sold by its manufacturer Aerei da Trasporto Regionale (ATR) for US$18.5 million (RM60 million) each. MAS will use its own funds and borrowings to buy the ATR planes.

Asked on the status of the delivery of the six Airbus A380 jumbo passenger jets, Idris said the first A380 will arrive in January 2011 while the other five will be delivered on a monthly basis during the first half of 2011. MAS was originally scheduled to take delivery of its first A380 in July last year and its sixth in May 2009. However, delivery dates have been delayed after European aircraft maker Airbus began facing production delays since 2005 for its flagship superjumbo programme.

Capt, I believe it's 35 firm order with 20 on option.

Does the B738 suitable to replace MH's current A333s? If it is, then maybe MH has a strong reason to exersize the 20 aircrafts on option. Or maybe MH can change it to B739ER for more capacity?

I would NEVER read too deep into any airline/aircraft related reports by the Malaysian or any non-specialist media.

For instance, you get the "Airbus 747-600" type statements. And on MH getting "second-hand planes from financially troubled airlines", I would actually read that as MH taking over earlier delivery slots of new planes from airlines which are deferring delivery due to financial constraints.

Yes, that makes sense. MH aircraft is not that old. Its only old when you compare them to SQ :D

Anyway, I mentioned in the other thread about GA being an airline which has lots of orders, but could struggle with money.

Any other airline with a similar situation that IJ could be possibly referring to?

In my opinion, the 25 oredr for the Boeing 737-800s will remain firm. MH Boeing 737-400s are ageing and it's critical that the managerment does not overlook this situation.

Yes En.Azizul, the B739ER is perfectly suited for flights to Xiamen or Kunming whereby the loads does not warrant an aircraft the size of A333 but has the range rather than the shorter legged B734.

Almost certainly those planes will come fitted with the Aviation Partners "fuel reducing winglets" considering the current high cost of fuel.

Anyway,I am almost certain our intrepid Capt Radzi will be gleeming with joy once the new planes start coming online, thats if hes not promoted to the much vaunted B772ER.

I only want the 777-300ER.

Couldn't care less about anything else.

A350-900 ke, 787-800 ke, A333-300 ke.. Tak kisah!

(Whether it is the A350-900, 787-800, A333-300.. I don't care!) :p

agree with Mushrif - both are somewhat similar media organization (do we classify NST and Bernama as non specialist medias??) how la macam itu?

btw - from a source in NST - the piece from NST is a direct interview itself with IJ when he was in penang.....

NST - 738's (35-as reported widely in medias) +20 options

Bernama - 738's - 55

looks the same to me, bernama is a brief media piece whilst NST detailed it down further...

Pardon me, i just lost..please help me..MH will buy with wingtip or not for new B737-800??..i believe MH will not try any attempt to buy B737-900 due to current market, low passenger demand..

So 1 long episode will end soon.. :p emm new episode waiting, wide body aircraft..??which MH will buy, 787 or new 747..Since MH will take the A380..B787 may be the best option..just wild guess :pardon: :pardon:

I'm assuming that the A380 will replace some 747, so the 787 won't be enough.

If MH goes for the same config as SQ, the A380 will seat 471 passengers. Since MH ordered six, the total capacity is 2826 passengers.

The current capacity of the 747 is 5018 passengers (13 aircraft with 386 passengers capacity).

The gap is 2192. Perfect for an order for about 8 to 10 77W's :D

738 - with or without winglets

We already have previous examples from MH - remember the 2 wet leased B738 from Travel service (2006 I think) One is with winglets and the other one without winglets.

I prefer with winglets of course, definitely, for sure 200% prefer with winglets......

(Flashback) I jumped with excitement when I saw the b738 with winglets parked near satelite building while we were taking off.... i was so excited to see a MH 738 with the sexy winglets jutting out then.... the winglets gives the 737 a very elegant and sexy look....

can check out the pictures on a.net

Rumours are spreading in A.Net that MH will announce an order of widebody aircrafts during the Farnborough Air Show soon. CHRISBA773ER and NYC777 seem convinced that MH is holding the biggest secret in its chest - possibly an order of 23 B787-8s. They also predicted that MH will order some additional A380s and D7 is going to announce an order from Airbus.

I doubt MH will order anything.

If they make an order for WB's, I can just imagine the parliament..

This is the problem of political instability :(

out of curiosity - are those 2 Airliners.net gentlemen from Boeing, Airbus or from MH that we can depend on for news?

at this juncture I would rather digest IJ's NST interview - should any thing differs or should there a wide body purchase announcement in farnborough - then he has his credibility at play.A given thing - corporate figures will not contradict what they say in the press.

From marketwatch.com:

Boeing, Malaysia Airlines Announce Order for 35 Next-Generation 737s

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 16, 2008 - Boeing and Kuala Lumpur-based Malaysia Airlines today announced the airline has ordered 35 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes. The order is valued at more than $2.6 billion at current list prices. The airline also has acquired purchase rights for an additional 20 Next-Generation 737-800s.

Today's announcement was made at the Farnborough International Airshow by Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Scott Carson; Malaysia Airlines Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Tengku Azmil Zahruddin; and Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President, Sales, South and Southeast Asia Dinesh Keskar.

The order, which brought the total number of Boeing 737s ordered past the 8,000th mark, was recently posted on the Boeing Commercial Airplanes Orders and Deliveries Web site attributed to an unidentified customer.

"Today we celebrate Malaysia Airlines as the newest member of the Next-Generation 737 family of operators, and we welcome this occasion to strengthen our long-term relationship with a valued partner," Carson said. "The selection of the Next-Generation 737 to support the airline's strategic fleet modernization plan reinforces the superior economics of the most fuel efficient single-aisle airplane operating in today's market."

The 737s will be fitted with Blended Winglets, which improve fuel efficiency by up to four percent, increase range, and reduce CO2 emissions and takeoff noise.

Also from the news release, to answer Pieter;

The 737-800, which can seat from 162 to 189 passengers, is 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds) lighter, can fly 481 kilometers (260 nautical miles) farther and 335 meters (1,100 feet) higher while carrying 12 more passengers than the competing model.

Airbus would of course say the exact opposite, I suppose :D

Thanks Ming Kiat..finally i got the answer..

But i still doubt if MAS will make any surprise announcement during the air show to purchase any wide body, officially at least.. But it still exciting news, if people somewhere around world speak about this rumors, mean that MAS still interest to buy it..but the only question is, when Datuk IJ will put his signature on the deal..huhuhu.. ;) ;)

Because he just sign for B737NG..

Although I would have loved LionAir's -900ER better, the -NG is good enough.
