Naked Body Scanner at Airports

Recommended Posts

OMG..i found this on the news

The Transportation Security Administration is unveiling new screening technology at Reagan National Airport (web|news) that has some travelers concerned it is too up close and personal.

The full body scanner takes a 360-degree X-ray of person, effectively removing the individual's clothes to reveal what's underneath. While the technology is adept at revealing hidden weapons, including guns and explosives, it also reveals the intimate contours of the body.

Of late, I think the security people at KUL are starting to grope people while frisking them! They used to just lightly pat down or used the wand, but on several occasions, they would raba the belt buckle, pass their hands close to the crotch etc.

The machine is used to scan things behind clothes, but to what extend? How if they scan under those weapon behind clothes as well? Like they missed the weapon but directly to the naked body?

Naked' scanner in airport trial

A human X-ray machine that produces "naked" images of passengers has started a trial at Manchester Airport.

The authorities say it will speed up security checks by quickly revealing any concealed weapons or explosives.

But the full body scans will also show up breast enlargements, body piercings and a clear black-and-white outline of passengers' genitals.

The airport has stressed that the images are not pornographic and will be destroyed straight away.

Sarah Barrett, head of customer experience at the airport, said most passengers did not like the traditional "pat down" search.

At Manchester Airport's Terminal 2, where the machine has been introduced, passengers will no longer have to remove their coats, shoes and belts as they go through security checks.

Ms Barrett said: "This scanner completely takes away the hassle of needing to undress.

Ms Barrett said the black and white image would only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it is deleted.

She said: "The images are not erotic or pornographic and they cannot be stored or captured in any way."

Passengers can refuse to be scanned, she said.

The scanners cost £80,000 each. They work by beaming electromagnetic waves on to passengers while they stand in a booth. A virtual three-dimensional image is then created from the reflected energy.

Ms Barrett said the radiation levels were "super safe".

She said: "Passengers can go through this machine 5,000 times a year each without worrying. The amount of radiation transmitted is tiny."

The Department for Transport will decide whether to install them permanently in about a year's time.

The scanners, made by RapiScan Systems, have already been tried out in New York, Los Angeles and Heathrow Airport, in 2004.

Is there a sign/note saying so ?

Most passengers wouldn't know otherwise...

The accompanying image in the original source article shows an overweight guy with his balls in full glory! Cant the operator snap a photo from the screen using camera-phones etc before the images are destroyed?

Knowing how things end up - it wont be long or too difficult before such images of famous and not-so-famous people start to circulate around.

Heathrow worker warned over body scanner misuse

A Heathrow Airport security guard was given a police warning after he was allegedly caught staring at images of a female colleague in a body scanner.

The 25-year-old worker was quizzed by police over alleged remarks he made to his co-worker after she entered a scanner by mistake.

The incident took place at Terminal 5 on 10 March.

It is believed to be the first time an airport worker has been disciplined for abusing a body scanner.

The scanners show clear outlines of passengers' anatomies.

They were introduced at Heathrow and Manchester airports to check for concealed weapons and explosives following the failed Christmas Day bomb plot by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up a jet over Detroit in the United States.

'Appropriate training'

Director of Legal Enforcement and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Susie Uppal, said the incident highlighted the risks to "privacy and respect for human dignity" that are posed by the use of full body scanners.

She said: "It is only through appropriate training and monitoring that we can ensure that the risk of breaches of discrimination and human rights laws by those who take and use the scanned images of passengers are minimised.

"The government has told us very little about what systems are currently in place to ensure that those employed to use the scanners are acting lawfully, with fairness and without discriminating."

She added that the government needed to take urgent and decisive action to ensure that "incidents of this kind are not repeated".

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police received an allegation regarding an incident that happened at Heathrow Terminal 5 on March 10.

"A first instance harassment warning has been issued to a 25-year-old male."

Well, that "sooner or later" moment is now upon us folks ! :)

Bit of a bummer, isn't it?

A report from October 2008, when the naked body scanners were first being introduced at Melbourne Airport in Australia, detailed how the X-ray backscatter devices don’t work properly unless the genitals of people going through them are visible.

“It will show the private parts of people, but what we’ve decided is that we’re not going to blur those out, because it severely limits the detection capabilities,” said Office of Transport Security manager Cheryl Johnson.

US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin removing all body scanner machines that show naked images of people. The machines have caused a public outcry about privacy invasion.

Rapiscan, which makes the backscatter airport body scanner machines, failed to meet a congressionally mandated deadline to upgrade the technology with software that protects individual privacy. New scanners show any suspect objects on a humanoid image rather than on a scan of a real human body.

“Due to its inability to deploy non-imaging Automated Target Recognition (ATR) software by the congressionally mandated June 2013 deadline, TSA has terminated its contract with Rapiscan,” TSA said.

TSA will remove 174 backscatter units from about 30 airports nationwide, replacing the majority with ATR-upgraded L-3 advanced imaging (AIT) millimeter wave technology, a TSA spokesperson told ATW. It will also take some of the 669 millimeter wave units, which are in service at US airports and deploy them to airports that have outdated backscatter technology.

US Congress originally mandated all backscatter technology must be ATR-equipped by June 2012; it later extended that deadline by a year.

“Rapiscan and TSA determined that the Secure 1000SP would not be ready to meet the next level of ATR software by the congressionally mandated June 2013 deadline,” Rapiscan parent OSI Systems said in a statement. “As the Secure 1000SP has been operated by TSA as an effective imaging system, TSA plans to deploy these systems, with Rapiscan’s assistance, to US government agencies that already rely on the Secure 1000 product line or can enhance their security programs with the Secure 1000SP. The agreement enables the US government to continue to benefit from the investments made by TSA, while allowing TSA to meet the congressional ATR mandate.”

“We didn’t believe [Rapiscan] would make that deadline either,” the spokesperson said.

The ATR-upgraded L-3 AIT solution has already been deployed at some airports, including Boston Logan.

Was expecting images of celebrities leaked to the net but haven’t encountered any so far. Guess either there isn’t any USB connector at the terminal or TSA discipline is very strict.

I actually like these nude-o-scopes because they're quite fast. And ... They force me to get in shape so I can put on a good show :p

But there are two types - the milimeter thingy doesn't even have a clear image. Only a snowman generic type image and you definitely cannot see anything.
