Cathay Pacific Launches Fourth Penang-Hong Kong Non-stop Flight

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama)-- Cathay Pacific Airways announced Thursday that it will be launching its fourth non-stop flight from Penang to Hong Kong beginning June 6, 2008.

The new additional A330 non-stop flight will start its service from June 5 with an incoming flight from Hong Kong to Penang, the airline said in a statement.

The new flight will further enhance the current daily flights seven times a week from Penang to Hong Kong, it added.

Flight from Penang to Hong Kong will depart at 0915 and arrive at 1305 on Friday while that from Hong Kong to Penang will depart at 1600 and arrive at 1935 on Thursday.

There will be no change to Cathay Pacific's existing service on other days of the week departing from Penang to Hong Kong.

The airline said it will continue to actively promote Malaysia across its network in line with the government's decision to extend "Visit Malaysia Year 2007" to 2008.

I remembered, back in 1997, taking a MH flight (MH69 or something) KUL-PEN-HKG. The flight was operated by A333. Didn't know why MH cancelled this flight.

I'm aware that before the nonstop flight being launched by CX, all CX's flights from PEN is a one stop flight through KUL ..does this mean that the one stop flight to HKG through KUL will be reduce once the nontstop flight being commence?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't MH069 because MH069 has always been operating KUL-BKI-TPE-BKI-KUL.

Cathay Pacific to start new weekly flight from June 5

Friday May 30, 2008

By CHRISTINA CHIN

GEORGE TOWN: Come June 5, Cathay Pacific Airways will add a fourth weekly direct flight between Hong Kong and Penang, allowing passengers to travel straight to the shopping paradise on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. According to the airline’s Penang manager Cheuk Lo, its existing flights from the state to Hong Kong via Kuala Lumpur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays remained unchanged.

“For the past 30 years or so, we have been the only airline flying direct from Penang to Hong Kong. Since 2006, our direct flights have been operating thrice weekly. This year, we have decided to introduce an additional flight to further enhance Penang’s connectivity to our aviation hub in Hong Kong. In future, we hope to have daily non-stop flights to Hong Kong because Penang is quite popular among Hong Kong travellers due to the cultural and language similarities as well as the cheap and tasty hawker fare offered,” he said in an interview.

Cheuk said the golf courses here were also very good and relatively cheap while the state’s close proximity to Langkawi was an added attraction. “Besides providing better and more frequent service to our passengers, additional connectivity is also aimed at promoting Penang’s tourism sector,” he said. He added that Cathay Pacific was very keen on working with the government to boost the state’s tourism industry.

He also said the airline was in the process of acquiring 50 new aircraft. “The planes are arriving in stages and once we have expanded our fleet, we will definitely look at further enhancing our connectivity to the whole country,” Cheuk said. The airline’s district sales manager Charles Wong described the current Penang-Hong Kong load as “healthy”.

“From Hong Kong, passengers can easily connect to various popular destinations including Japan, Europe, Korea and North America. In addition, we also offer air and sea packages so once you land, we have ferries to take you to places like Macau and Zhuhai in China,” he said.
