Dewan Rakyat: AirAsia owes MAHB RM100mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost carrier AirAsia owes Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) more than RM100mil for its use of airports in the country, said Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat.

He said AirAsia owed MAHB RM110.36mil since 2002 until March 31.

The minister who was replying to matters raised during winding up the debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address, said AirAsia felt that the rates were "too high" and had appealed for the amount to be reduced.

“AirAsia did not agree with the outstanding balance and had asked for a lower rate, so the matter has been forwarded to the Finance Ministry," he told Wee Choo Keong (PKR – Wangsa Maju).

He said the debts included RM5.4mil that the low cost carrier owed when it was operating the Rural Air Services (RAS) in Sabah and Sarawak.

Ong also clarified that the Government had never marginalized said Malaysia Airlines.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said scheduled welfare aid would be paid to the needy on the 5th of every month, while the approval for welfare support could be obtained within two weeks.

She said the Community Welfare Department (JKM) is taking steps to improve the delivery system.

The department would reduce bureaucracy and conduct a scheduled review of the aid delivery system, she said in her reply.

Slightly off-topic: They at Dewan Rakyat also start firing (again!) at MAS for serving alcoholic beverage and FA uniforms...

As if there were no other, much more important issues to discuss...

Interested to know whether this accrual is reflected in AK’s book?

:drinks:

Trawled through AK 07 financial report, believe MAHB money is earning interest in AK’s bank account. Free cash flow and bank interest for TF :pardon:

It show AK have very strong support from the gomen.

More bad news for shareholders of AK:

AirAsia falls below IPO price

SHARES of AirAsia Bhd fell below its initial public offering price in 2004 for the first time yesterday as investors feared that near-record high jet fuel prices and mounting competition could hurt its bottom line.

The budget carrier's stock closed 4.3 per cent, or five sen lower, at RM1.12.

"I don't think the investors are worried about the company's gearing. Its cash flow looks good. The main issue everyone is concerned about is the fuel price," OSK Research Sdn Bhd associate director Chris Eng said.

Investors were also concerned over AirAsia's soon-to-be announced first quarter earnings, expected to be out sometime next week.

aira.jpgJet fuel prices closed at a record US$162.55 (RM528.29) a barrel in Singapore trading last Wednesday.

AirAsia is also facing increased competition from Malaysia Airlines (MAS), which recently cut its fares to woo customers.

"Across the board, all airlines are forced to innovate to come to terms in a higher fuel cost scenario," an Aseambankers analyst said.

AirAsia shares have depreciated by almost 30 per cent, or 48 sen, so far this year.

It has been a tough month for AirAsia. The stock closed higher only on two trading days, unchanged on another two, and lower on eight trading days.

Since last week, several research houses have downgraded the stock to a "sell", while OSK has a target price of RM1.01.

AirAsia, headed by group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes, is among 18 budget carriers that started flying in South and Southeast Asia in the past five years.

Since then, increased competition has forced some of the low-cost carriers to go out of business.

Indonesia's PT Adam Skyconnection Airlines shut down two months ago as funds dried out, while Oasis Hong Kong Airlines Ltd faced an almost similar problem and stopped flying last month.

Several other such carriers have postponed their share sale.

Saw this in Bernama News. MoF is the referee now, Malaysia boo-leh

Issue Of AirAsia's Debt With MAHB Referred To MoF

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said the issue of debt amounting to RM110.356 million owed by AirAsia Bhd to Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) has been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Finance for a resolution.

The matter had to be brought to the MoF because the low cost carrier company has disagreed with the rate MAHB has charged it.

"As far as I know, the debt has remained so because AirAsia has not agreed to the rate it has been charged and has requested that the airline be charged a lower rate," he said.

"This is the only conflict between AirAsia and MAHB, and this has been brought to the ministry for a resolution," he said in reply to a question from Wee Choo Keong (PKR-Wangsa Maju) on the debt issue between AirAsia and MAHB.

Ong said the money owed by AirAsia to MAHB was for the services at all the airports in Malaysia since 2002 till March this year.

Well, there are so many undisclosed parts that has been 'gali'ed lately. Not only in aviation, but in all gomen sector. As a gomen servant, I can feel the 'tempias' also. More time spent on writing answers to the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara, more time needed to 'gali' the information. Gosh...stressado....

So AK pretend that they accept the facilities(with pricing)...hold the payment and after that refuse to pay?

Then appeal for reduction...sounds like Ah Long's victims only...

As of now AK surely in deep trouble...more planes to come, more price reduction, now must pay MAHB. I hope they wont use the same trick to pay the airbuses.

Yes, that's very true...

But it drives us crazy.

We have to put aside our core business for the sake of entertaining all these question!

Being 61 years in aviation business is not a reason why Government can't treat AK like MH. MH has to do a lot of thing according to government wish masquerading as social service let alone flying government official everywhere regardless the profitablitiy. Apparently Stockholm Newark and Buenos Aires. but AK can even do RAS properly.

If I was the Minister of Transport that is as fair as it could get. Fair is not mean equally treatment. It means to put thing right where they belong.

an analogy i have 4 slice of bread to give to 2 person. 1 person is skinny who needs only one bread the other is fat who need three breads. It is not fair to give them equally 2 slices each. but it is only fair to give 1 to the skinny, and 3 to the fat one.
