Update: Knife scare causes emergency landing

(BangkokPost.com) - Airports of Thailand President AM Chana U-Sathaporn dismissed earlier reports that the emergency landing of the Bangladeshi passenger plane was a hijack.

AM Chana said the landing was made after a 25-year-old Bangladeshi man took out a knife, although he did not hurt any passengers.

"There were 60 passengers on the flight. It landed after an unruly passenger named Hasan Ali took out a small knife," he said.

AM Chana added that the pilot requested the emergency landing to prevent possible attacks. The emergency landing was made at Don Mueang Airport 9.30am Tuesday.

The man was then detained by the Thai police, who inspected his belongings and found no suspicious objects.

Airport authorities did not file any charges against him because he did not hurt any passengers.

Plane makes emergency landing in Bangkok after knife scare

BANGKOK (AFP) — A Bangladeshi airliner made an emergency landing Tuesday in Bangkok after a man with a fruit knife caused a panic among passengers, Thai aviation officials said.

The pilot of the GMG Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka asked for an emergency landing at 9:30 am (0230 GMT) after a passenger took out the knife, said Chana U-Sathaporn, president of Airports of Thailand.

Aviation authorities directed the plane to land at Bangkok's domestic Don Mueang airport, he added.

"This is not a hijacking or terrorism. The pilot asked for an emergency landing just to be safe," Chana told a press conference.

Chana earlier said that the passenger, identified as 25-year-old Bangladeshi national Harun Or Rashid Hasan Ali, had been unruly and frightened other passengers.

But police Major General Worrasak Nopsittiporn, commander of the Bangkok precinct that includes the airport, said Hasan Ali had taken out the knife to cut an apple, and had not caused any disturbance.

"He didn't try to harm anyone," Worrasak said, adding that Thai police would not charge him with a crime.

Hasan Ali was being escorted to Bangkok's international airport, where he would be placed on a flight to Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, Worrasak said.

The GMG flight, which had about 60 passengers, was grounded for about two hours in Bangkok before resuming its journey to Dhaka.

Aviation officials could not explain how Hasan Ali had gotten onto the plane with a knife.

Never expected such thing...

I was enjoying my first working day in KLIA today, and i was on my way from MTB to Satellite, around 8 or 9 something in the morning, and this old looking Biman Bangladesh DC-10 was parked at bay Charlie 4, next to a classic Uzbekistan Airways A310 at bay Charlie 6.

I was shocked to hear the news...while i was at MAS hangar 5 doing some tedious wiring job!!! <_>

From Bangkok Post

Thailand has deported a man who pulled out a small knife and caused a Bangladesh airliner to be diverted to Bangkok on Tuesday morning.

Haran Rashid Hassan Ali, 25, was placed aboard another flight to Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon by Thai authorities.

Ali was forcibly removed from a GMG Airlines aircraft on Tuesday morning after the pilot radioed that he had an emergency situation and landed at the old Don Muang airport north of Bangkok.

Two fighter jets from the Royal Thai Air Force scrambled, and escorted the plane to land at the airport, which also is the air force headquarters.

Airports of Thailand President AM Chana U-Sathaporn said he believed Ali had a mental disorder, but said Thailand could not lay any charges against him because had not harmed anyone aboard the flight from Malaysia to Bangladesh.

It is not known how he got the knife through Malaysian airport security. AM Chana described the weapon as a small fruit knife.

Reports said that Ali struggled with several fellow passengers and crew members before the pilot landed at Bangkok, but that there were no injuries. Other reports said there was a panic aboard the plane, which spent several hours at Don Muang before it departed with all the passengers except Ali.

Airport security.

I am sure there will be lots of investigations and reviews as to how the man who was on unsound mind managed to get a knife on board however small it was.
