MAS A380 - Fleet to be Retained

Recommended Posts

Given all these issues, does MAB still believe in keeping these whalejets for such charter? And for using these planes as "spares" for when the A330s are AOGed? This will be very very costly for MAB to maintained these or even 3 out of the A380s in serviceable condition and low usage and will bleed MAB into yearly losses for as long as it holds on to the jets.

I think the supersub role will only be temporary thing - once MAB gets its six ex-AB A332s, the role of the A380 will be somewhat reduced. I would think that the charter airline will probably get four A380s on commencement of their ops. The remaining two A380s might remain with MAB until such time when the charter ops needs more aircraft.

The a380 does bleed airlines a lot especially if they dun carry the passenger volume required, Thai airways have been operating them at losses on some of the european sectors, Korean Air is currently planning to offload their first a380 to the desert for scrap. The only airlines that seemingly have no complains are from the gulf middle east. Basically the plane is not a plane that will break even with just 200 passengers while the b77w has no issue with such load.

As for haj/charter it is also difficult to see. Other operators are scrambling for b777s and high density seating a330 to curb the old jet ban now, Flyglobal recently acquired a b777-300 too.

MAS will have to be careful now since nobody is willing to bail them or loan them.

Can MAB use A380s, which have been moved to the charter op with a new AOC, as a supersub?

Of course. No different from AK using D7 aircraft to operate some of its services many months ago.

In fact, any airline could use the ex-MH 380s.

Yes, quite true, didn't think of that. Thanks.

Yes, the A380 will now be playing the role of supersub during peak traffic periods or when the A333s are in short supply due to maintenance. They were used to HKG during the CNY rush and will also be deployed to NRT. In summer, they will be restored on the LHR services as well...

Due to incident happened when A330 AOG at Alice Springs, all a330 including freighter need to do engine inspection. That is why you will see numbers of a330 on ground.

Curious any service bulletin issued on this or only limited to mab fleet?

MAB cannot afford to have another air crash after those twin losses in 2014.

Safety checks conducted with the cooperation of the engine manufacturer following incidents would be prudent - there is no need to wait for any service bulletin.

I'm actually glad they're holding on to the A380s a little bit longer. It really is a magnificent aircraft and still my favourite to fly in even after the A350 and the Nightmareliner. The A380 would also be very handy for those peak season flights because the A333 simply does not have enough capacity.
