KK Lee 5 Report post Posted November 26, 2016 Malaysia's new airline – will it make it or break it? THERE was a lot of excitement when Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) CEO Peter Bellew talked about a plan to set up a new airline to serve the pilgrim market. He was at the Capa Centre of Aviation event in Singapore last week, showing delegates a plan code-named “Project Hope”. The excitement is to be expected, as if successful, it will spur others to follow suit. In the process, a second-hand market for the A380 super birds will be created, as there is no such market now even though there are nearly 200 such birds in the skies globally and 100 more on order. But if the plan does not live up to expectations, then the hope is that there will be no rescue plans for MAS in the future. More: http://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2016/11/25/new-airline-fresh-hope-and-risks/ Project hope is coined to reassign/get rid off A380 liability. If project hope business is sustainable, those haj chartered airline incorporated would be expanding and won't be waiting for pb to reinvent the wheel. If project hope business is sustainable, those haj chartered airline incorporated would be expanding and won't be waiting for pb to reinvent the wheel. Well PB said they did some research - that many B747s will be retired in the next 3 years as they fall due for D checks. Also Saudi Arabia won't allow aircraft of more than 20 years old to operate on Haj flights anymore. So he foresees a good opportunity coming up in the next few years. As if pb is the only one in the industry has the hindsight. Beside B747, there are plenty of 777 and A330 available. Further, if good opportunity does exists, well connected Saudi would get the first bite of cherry.

Don't forget, the Saudis have been wet leasing aircraft for many years already and Malaysian carriers benefitted from that. I think PB will want the new airline to be aggressively competing for those wet lease contracts.

I think PB will want the new airline to be aggressively competing for those wet lease contracts. If demand is year round, well connected Saudi have the resources to start or buy airline. They wet lease basically demand is seasonal. After project hope is established, a380 will be the project hope CEO's responsibility. Pb's hand is washed clean. Yes, the Saudi wet lease business is not the only business that it will pursue - there are other charters that can come from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and other Muslim charter markets in ASEAN. Project Hope will still be a subsidiary of MAG, of which PB is also the CEO. All it does is to allow it to come off MAB's financials.

Mh is not new to wet lease business, could capture chartered business with existing infrastructure. Either mh existing chartered department is sleeping on the job or tb is hallucuning. No wonder our fellow MWinger Capt. Dato Nik Huzlan is disillusioned with the performance of the charter department upon his departure.

It is currently short of A330s, so how can it be running MAScharter? If there is a wet lease demand, tb could implement project hope immediately with idling a380 and need not wait for a359 to arrive. Mushrif A 3 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Whats this story about Umrah pax stranded in KUL for 1-2 days as the chartered MH A380 went tech? Given that it happened at base and MH needs just 3 to do the LHR runs, what happened to the surplus capacity? Not all 6 are serviceable? No crew? Doing other charters? Given the long delay, one may be forgiven to think that the pax were stranded in Bolivia or Peru....not at KUL where at least a couple of A380s are just sun bathing... Just noticed CS-TKR a EuroAtlantic Airways 763 doing KUL-MED today. A rescue plane?

JuliusWong 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 There were two euroAtlantic 767 few days ago Those 767 are chartered by flynas. I would think different pilgrims groups organised by different companies. Or are all pilgrims handled by Tabing Haji and fly them using MH A380 or flynas 767?? Mohd Azizul Ramli 2 Report post Posted December 8, 2016 Looking at it from another perspective, umrah being a religious affair, if you are "not invited", no amount of private jets can get you there. If you are "invited", even with no intention to be there, you will be there.

leon t 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 Malaysia Airlines should have quickly leased 4 to 6 A330s instead of waiting for Alitalia's A330s - as clearly it is short of A330s, and it is not economical to fly the heavy 4 engined A380s to such A330s destinations where the passengers load is at most to 100% of an A330 - if at all its average load is even close to 100%. Sandeep G 1 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 How do u figure the "uneconomical" dispatch of an existing aircraft to a destination on an ad-hoc basis compared with the lease in of other aircraft? There are short term/Long term pros and cons to both - but the short term benefits to the A380 on Tokyo/Seoul would justifiably outweigh the cons..
flee 5 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 A380 is still cheaper because it is parked if you don't use it. That's why they used the spare A380's. MH are looking for the best deal as they are looking at a lease for at least 5 or 6 years, not 1 or 2 months.
