MAS A380 - Fleet to be Retained

Out of sudden, our neighbour to the north is mulling an idea of an additional 6 A380s. This is on top of their 6 firm order of the said aircraft. TG was originally scheduled to receive their A380s earlier than MH but they have requested the delivery to be delayed, at one time even so determined to cancel them altogether, so I am actually quite surprise thay are planning to double their A380 fleet.

MAS expects first A380 in April 2012 after several delays

 

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will receive its first Airbus A380 in April 2012, after several delays since it placed an order for six aircraft in 2003.

We actually have to wait for 9 years (!!!) to get our first A380 despite being one of the few launch customers.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) (3786) has confirmed that it will take delivery of its six A380-800 superjumbos from aircraft maker Airbus SAS.

 

"We have concluded talks with Airbus and the first plane will be delivered in April 2012," MAS managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin told reporters yesterday.

 

However, he declined to divulge the compensation MAS will receive for the third delay in the A380 delivery.

 

"The terms of compensation don't allow us to disclose when and how much will be provided to MAS," he said.

 

MAS was initially scheduled to be delivered the A380 in January 2007, but Airbus has delayed its delivery thrice.

 

In December, the airline said it received RM330 million as compensation from Airbus for the earlier delays.

Perhaps the A380 delay compensation might be in the form of a BIG DISCOUNT on their A330 order... :D

This may only be acceptable if the DISCOUNT + DELAY COMPENSATION is greater that anticipated Nett Profit of A380 operations were to be delivered as per original dates.

This amount may never be known as it is built into the aircraft price and is further clouded by the various financing instruments. We can guess that it should reduce the overall cost of operations for MH but it will never be reported as one lump sum like in Q1.

Unlike MH, TG deploy their 747 into many routes-FRA, OSL, NRT,LHR etc. If they can fill a 747, it's not impossible to fill an A380. TG also stated previously, their A380s will not be as glamorous as EK or SQ, but will be slightly expensive than other aircraft.

They seem to be taking forever to qualify that sim .

 

Sims usually dont take that long to be deployed , its been in installation for a long time . Good Holiday for the installers !

 

Btw, is it Capt. Aidid who is doing the acceptance on DCA Behalf ?

Most likely MH is not in a rush to get it up and running soon.

 

Besides its going to be idle for at least another year before crew training begins.

There are many airlines using the simulators at the MAS building; for example Garuda is using the A330 sim, one Japanese airline using the B734 sim as well as many other small airlines.

The 737NG simulator is in its final phases of disassembly .

 

They removed all the outer panels today and I think its going to be out of the plant by next week

 

Was great to see the Malaysia Airlines logo on the CAE Sim , it will be going ' home ' soon

Some update for MAS' A380...Nothing much been mention as still a year + to reach Malaysian soil...

 

Presented by SGM of MD's Office during Malaysia Airlines Investor Day on 20th April 2010...

In addition to those slides, maybe we could include this one, which mentioned that MH's A380s will be equipped with a different IFE systems than MH's new B738s and A333s (Thales TopSeries vs Panasonic XSeries).

The Thales TopSeries IFE system is featuring 'intuitive touch interface' meaning it'll be 'touch screen' yay! That alone will beat up SQ's IFE system aboard their A380s (in the Economy Class).

Interesting, indeed. I'm glad MH decided to put Economy seats on upper deck. They would be the most sought after.

 

The top deck economy seats will be Y+ tho, if what i am reading here is correct - unlike what SQ have right now

420 Economy class (Main and Upper deck), that's what the slide says.
