Rumour: MH to Cut Inflight Meals Beginning 1 October 2007

Wonder how could 7% of opinion managed to remove the low carb and healthier sandwic. :pardon:

Believe hot meal box is the first ‘Turn around’ or ‘U-turn’ of IJ&co BTP. Wonder what is next? Any speculation?

MAS serving hot meals in boxes

PETALING JAYA: Hot meals are back on Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flights, but they are still served in meal boxes.

MAS managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala said the hot meal boxes, which were launched last month, had improved aircraft turnaround time by five minutes.

“By improving the turnaround time, MAS can increase revenue by RM50mil a year,” he said at the MAS Academy yesterday.

He said passengers who do not feel like eating while on board could take the meal boxes as takeaways.

“We prefer that passengers take them out, as this means we save on cleaning time,” Idris said, adding that the objective was to increase in-flight efficiency.

“This approach will see the return of all-time favourites such as nasi lemak and nasi goreng kampung as well as the introduction of new varieties.”

Passengers can choose from 37 Asian and Western meal options that change on a daily basis. Those with special dietary requirement need to inform the airline when during ticket booking their tickets.

“We are conducting an in-flight survey until Aug 15 and will use the findings to continuously refine our meal offerings,” he said.

The airlines is also progressively developing special meals such as for children and vegetarians, and these will be introduced by the end of next month.

Hot meal boxes are currently offered on domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Kuching, Miri and Kota Kinabalu, as well as on Asean flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, Yangon, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Jogjakarta, Phuket, Bandar Seri Begawan, Denpasar, Hanoi, Jakarta, Manila, Siem Reap, Surabaya and Singapore.

Awww, give the guy a break, perhaps MH will shine if we forumers in particular were managing MH??? Maybe we will launch MH further than SQ, maybe we will make MH into the world's most profitable airline dethroning the current champion..... but then wait, have to fall back to earth.

we have interferences (from you know who) that may hinder all our plans....

it's not easy to be IJ? easier posting replies and thoughts than attending meetings, crunching financial figures, leading and managing people what more a big corporation, handling challenges and plenty, lots more... what more with interferences that is difficult to fend from a governing decision maker.

In fairness at least we see improvements from his stewardship, although not with flying colours but with all the excessive bleeding and wounds in the past, healing will take longer.....

RM50m from better turnaround time

Efforts to improve aircraft turnaround time. including the introduction of meal boxes, could bring in RM50 million additional revenue annually for Malaysia Airlines, its managing director and chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Idris Jala, said on Monday.

Bernama had reported that the hot meal boxes, currently offered on selected MAS flights, were likely to bring in RM50 million additional revenue annually.

According to Bernama, Idris had said. "When we introduced the light meal boxes last year, our primary objective was to increase in-flight service efficiency with the aim of aircraft turnaround time.

"By improving each aircraft's turnaround time by five minutes, we are able to increase our aircraft utilisation which is equivalent to one B737-400 aircraft. This translates to potential additional revenue of RM50 million per year"

Well at least this time he admitted that the PRIMARY OBJECTIVE was to increase in-flight service efficiency thus turnaround time. Not the puke inducing spin on healthy food for customers, 93% acceptance, etc etc.

When you simplify, in this case catering, you can have a shorter turnaround or transit time on ground for example from 30 minutes reduced to 25 minutes. This means, that if one aircraft is normally utilise for 10 flights/sectors a day, with a shorter transit/turnaround the same aircraft can now do 12 flights.

As a result if you currently require say 10 planes to operate your daily amount of flights, with the higher utilisation of 12 flights a day you now need only 9 planes to do the same amounts of flight thus you save on leasing etc.

I hope that helps you. Note the numbers used are just examples and not actual figures of a perticular airline or aircraft.

This is what LCC's like AK have been doing since day one. However a faster turnaround can only be consistantly achieved if ALL aspects of an airlines transit procedures are reviewed/adjusted. It's like a F1 pit stop, if one person in the pit stop crew is out of sync, then the whole stop is a failure. So even if the catering is completed and cabin boarded with pax, but the loading and unloading of baggage/cargo is still done the same way than the new transit time might not be achived.

06-08-2008: MAS offers staff flexi, part-time job options

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

SUBANG: Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) has launched a flexi employment programme, a voluntary initiative which allows employees to explore new work and business opportunities outside the airline, as it attempts to fight off surging fuel costs.

In a statement yesterday, MAS said staff could apply for leave for up to 12 months or work part-time. The airline did not say how many staff it wanted to take part in the programme.

It said employees were given a choice to choose between a Voluntary Leave Programme (VLP) and a Part Time — 50% Programme (50% PT programme).

Two options are available under the VLP which is open to Malaysian-based permanent staff, except technical crew. Option one allows employees to take a monthly allowance amounting to 20% of the last drawn basic salary or RM500, whichever is higher. The staff will also enjoy existing medical and dental benefits.

Option 2 allows the employee to enjoy the annual privilege travel, concessional travel and medical benefits. However, there is no monthly allowance. “Employees can take the leave and return as a full-time employees in either six or 12 months,” Tengku Azmil said.

Under the 50% PT option, which is open to Malaysian-based permanent staff who are not on shift duties, employees will be allowed to work part-time with their work schedule halved. Accordingly, their basic salary will also be halved.

MAS said with the approval from their immediate superior, employees could opt to work alternate weeks, work in either morning or afternoon sessions or alternate between two and three days a week. The closing date for submission for the two programmes is Oct 1, 2008.

“This is a win-win situation at a time when airlines around the world are retrenching employees to cope with the skyrocketing fuel price. Although we want to reduce manpower in the short term to manage our cost as we are similarly affected by the fuel price, our approach is different as we will grow in the medium- to long-term.

“We want to keep our skilled employees. As such, we are offering a voluntary programme, where employees now have an opportunity to take time off to explore new opportunities, learn new skills, and yet have the assurance of having a job to return to,” said MAS executive director and chief financial officer, Tengku Azmil Zahruddin.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that MAS joined Qantas Airways Ltd and other carriers in seeking to cut staff as it struggled to cope with jet-fuel prices that had jumped 75% in a year. MAS cut 3,000 jobs in 2006 and 2007.

MAS said in June that it would reduce flights and scrap less-profitable routes, with the aim of cutting as much as RM1 billion in costs this year. The airline has also stopped most recruitment and raised fuel surcharges for international flights by as much as 80% in June.

Jet fuel added 0.6% on Monday to US$149.80 (RM494.34) a barrel in Singapore. The price hit a record US$181.85 on July 3.

Lets pray for fuel price not skyrocketing after this..with months of August, the fuel price pattens show it start getting down..now around USD120 per barrel compare to the highest USD140..

deserted loyal customers, jumped ship customers..... at the end of the day it still boils down to dollars and cents, he managed to turn MH from loss to gain in his first tenure, unless of course if the revenue is a "dressed up" profit & loss statement with creative accounting...who knows like everyone says too much interference.

IJ is commended for his U-turn in BTP, an improvement of service for customers. Whether it is sufficient to recapture those deserted pax is remain to be seen.

For someone like me with presenile dementia I dug this out from MH press release (September 07) to jog my memory:

Sepang (27 September 2007) Malaysia Airlines will introduce meal boxes for its economy class passengers on its regional short-haul flights effective 1 October 2007.

Customers can look forward to a variety of offerings comprising savoury sandwiches, fruit yoghurt, fresh fruits, crunchy snacks or sweet muffin, depending on the time of the day. Child meals and special meals including vegetarian will also be offered.

Customers will continue to enjoy unlimited inflight beverages such as coffee, tea and fruit juices.

Malaysia Airlines' Assistant General Manager, Inflight Services, En Azman Ahmad said, "We are delighted to offer these meal boxes in response to our customers' requests. Our inflight survey reveals that a large proportion of our passengers prefer light meal boxes which we then filled with the top five food items that they chose."

"The result is a more wholesome offering, promoting healthy eating and a well-balanced diet, while providing our passengers with the option of taking away the boxes".

CEO is a man, is not holy or perfect and can make mistake. Flip flop or U turn once means he dares to admit his mistake or misjudgement. As long as he is making the company more competitive and profitable, he should be commended. Hopefully, he will benchmark MH service with SQ, EK and CX rather than GA.

GA is not the main competitor to MH, so the management should strive harder to at 1east match with CX and SQ overall service.

MAS does not serve snack box on KCH-BKI-KCH. I last flew this route in 2007, and was served only a small bun with some unknown stuffing (dodgy looking processed meat). Looks like you're luckier than me! ;)
