Rumour: MH to Cut Inflight Meals Beginning 1 October 2007

Recommended Posts

These are all purely based on rumours and there is no hard evidence to support this!

I would definitely won't believe the rumours, esp with that tag line of 5 star airline with LCCs cost, who in their right business mind would think of such taglines to drive their staff?

Well, for the inflight meals, no hard evident yet but as for the tag line, please refer to HERE.

Well, MAS would think of such taglines to drive their business staff. Using a very cheap tagline!

Should that be true, then a fill EY fare between BKI-KUL-BKI will be very pricy. If im not mistaken it's priced at RM1,146. I dont think that's the fare they should charge if the meals is to be replaced by just snack. In the the long terms, passsengers may just switched to AK if the fare is comparatively lower plus they are now operating all new A320s fleets.

All new A320s but terrible flight delays here and there, also not good for some people. those who travel a lot on business trip, i do think they would still prefer MH as MH flights are more punctual/on time as compared to AK. in flight meals would not be an issue for some of this people. would those travelers on business trip dare take AK flight if they have important meeting somewhere around the country when AK flights are facing terrible flight delay? would business travelers sacrifice cheaper flight fare with no meals and suffers delays? or would they take MH flight with much expensive fare and slightly above average in flight meal being served and flights being on time?

Actually, MAS do delay, yeah it is better then AK but they still delay. What is the difference? The only thing now has better than AK now I can think of is inflight service, which AK doesn't seems to be losing.

And, to be honest, how many business man will fly everyday? Where the hell MAS going to dig those people out to fly with them everyday?

Management overhead and administrative chaos - these two things are the money eaters. But of course, a manager would never dream of cutting costs in his fields. Because even if he fails and he ruins the airline to death, he will surely receive a good bonus and gratification.

This is precisely the problem within MAS. Always has been...and lets hope it won't always be a stick up their rear...

agree that the main problem is HIGH management overheads. too many idiots running the show - too many overpaid foreign consultants who have not helped to improve MH's situation in the least. as mentioned before - JJ ong was a LOCAL who managed to turn around the fortunes of MASKargo.

why can emirates and qatar airways have european managers who have the vision and foresight to continually improve the airline.

why can SIA have LOCAL people with vision and foresight?

MH's bosses are too comfortable with their positions - draining more money out of the ailing airline while kicking out deserving people who do the legwork.

Its not about LCC cost - MH said categorically it is not an LCC. Why are they fixated on competing with one instead of focussing of SQ and EK?

The snack box idea sounds VERY VERY familiar....

Just a question to MH experts - are any of MH's senior staff or consultants ex-BA staff/consultants?

Because all these sound like how BA's EU catering went from hot food, to all day deli boxes (the EXACT same thing which is now confirmed for MH).

And now BA's shorter EU flights are offering just a drink and a pack of chips...

OT: Going for an interview with a management consulting firm in a few weeks so i might just end up as one of those con-sultans...*blush* :p

LH also has this "snack box" thingy and it is very well-designed. But then, LH only serves the snack box on very short flights (and also KUL/BKK and SIN/CGK sector). And MAS intends on serving this snack box as far as BKI from KUL.

Well...

Just start buying your burgers and nuggets from McD's before you board...then inflight..makan!

Been doing that for years...nothing beats a Big Mac, supersized coke (transferred into plastic bottle) and 12 piece nuggets at cruising altitude :D

Thank you so much Mahmood for the confirmation. My decision to look for the truth about this rumour here in MalaysianWings forum proved fruitful.

I never expect to received such a very detailed information about it (routes effected and even the menu). Now, since you have mentioned it, I hope you'll let us MalaysianWings forumers to have a peep of how the snackbox looks like. I am glad to hear that they are coming up with a 'good' (content and design wise) snackbox, as I suggested in Post #12.

Since the beginning, I am actually quite neutral with this snackbox issue taking MH's financial status into consideration (and also because I rarely fly in Economy Class nowadays). Although it is hard for most of us to accept this, I think we have to look on the business side of it. MH is in its final phase of turning around and a lot have to be done to ensure the record profit projected by the management is achieved. I understand the argument about the high management OVERHEAD cost but if those costs are 'untouchable' (being in Malaysia where such policies exist), MH has to find another way to cut cost and hence, the cutting in inflight meals.

Regarding the pulling out of one cabin staff in all B734s' Economy class, service efficiencies and safety issues will arise. Reducing the number of cabin staff from 3 to 2 in Economy will increase the ratio of cabin staff to passengers from 1:43 (3 cabin staff for 128 Economy passengers) to 1:64 (2 cabin staff for 128 Economy passengers). Delivery speed will reduce as each cabin staff has to serve more passengers for inflight services and safety concern will increase as each during emergency procedures. However, in my opinion, MH's management still proceed with this idea because:

- To improve cabin staff productivities and at the same time to help trimming the number of staff to favourable level as we are all aware that MH is overstaffed. When the number of staff is reduced, more costs can be saved and a proper perks for well performed staff can be laid down.

- As for the concern for safety, I think given MH's excellent safety record, this aspect (unfortunately) can be overlooked.

Therefore, cutbacks in inflight meals and cabin staff.

Now, let bring this discussion (since it is no more a rumour) to the next level. Will be it permanent or just until the so called 'trial' period ends? What I can envisaged in the nearest future right now is that MANY POLITICIANS WILL BE BASHING MH BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE AND DEMAND THE GOVERNMENT TO INTERFERE. Something I never couldn't accept![
