Melaka Airport Runway Extension To Complete By September

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- Work to extend the runway of the Melaka International Airport in Batu Berendam is expected to be completed in another six months.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said a loan of RM65 million meant for the extension of the runway was approved by the federal government early last month.

"The runway will be extended by 400 metres from the current 1,800 metres. Upon completion, the Melaka International Airport will be able to cater for bigger aircraft like Boeing and Airbus, " he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a term loan agreement worth RM50 million between Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad and Casa Del Rio Sdn Bhd to build a hotel, a boutique and an apartment in Melaka, here today.

He also said the state government believed it could achieve its target of 7.4 million tourist arrivals in the first six months this year.

AirAsia To Operate Flights From Batu Berendam Airport

MELAKA, March 31 (Bernama) -- Budget airline, AirAsia, will be asked to use aviation facilities at the newly-upgraded Batu Berendam Airport from May 1, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said today.

Mohd Ali said he will meet AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes soon on the matter.

The airport, given a RM131.5 million facelift, can be used from mid-April.

It can accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft and Airbus at half-load, he told reporters after inspecting work progress at the airport.

Upgrading work by Konsortium Uni-Integrated started in April 2007 to facilitate health tourist arrivals, particularly from Sumatra, who number close to 60,000 a year.

The airport will have a 7,000 square metre new terminal and will be equipped with facilities to receive domestic and international flights.

Mohd Ali said facilities for full load landing by Boeing and Airbus are expected to be ready in October, with the runway extended by 400 metres to 2,200 metres from 1,800 metres.

Fernandes, after a meeting with Mohd Ali in August last year, had said for a start AirAsia had identified six destinations -- four in Sumatra and two domestic -- from the airport.

Boeing aircraft will be used to land and take off for Palembang, Pekan Baru, Padang and Medan in Sumatra, Penang and Langkawi.

Fernandes however told the state government AirAsia's passenger and cargo planes will use the Batu Berendam Airport only at full load capacity.

Mohd Ali said the airport can handle 1.5 million tourists and rake in RM1 billion revenue when it is fully operational.

The Batu Berendam Airport, the country's first health tourism airport, has plans to handle flights from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong, he added.

Melaka airport is in a disadvantageous position. It is too near to KLIA and Senai. If the Melaka CM wants more people to fly to Melaka, he has to offer a better state for people to visit. I was in Melaka in December and frankly, it is not somewhere I would visit frequently! I think other cities in Malaysia have much more to offer!

New terminal opens with a fuming MB

By CHEN PELF YEEN

MALACCA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam was left fuming when he realised that a whole lot of problems needed fixing despite the official opening of a new terminal at the Malacca International Airport.

First, he was informed that the extended 1,800m runway under the RM131.5mil project could not be fully utilised because several obstructing trees had yet to be removed.

Later, he took to task airport officials for failing to provide a wheelchair for an elderly passenger who could hardly walk.

He said the airport must have sufficient wheelchairs for passengers as the airport was designated as an entry point for health tourism in the state.

Comfort ride: Mohd Ali pushing the wheelchair of a passenger from Riau to the Immigration check-in counter at the Malacca International Airport yesterday.

“There seems to be coordination problems between the contractors and state officers monitoring the progress.

“I will chair a meeting tomorrow (today) with all the relevant officers,” he told reporters after a ceremony to welcome the passengers of Riau Airlines yesterday.

The ceremony saw Malaysia Airports Berhad beginning operations at the new terminal to handle its first flight – a Riau Airlines Fokker 50 from Pekan Baru at 9.30am.

The project to build a new terminal and to extend the former 1,362m runway to 1,800m was launched in April 2007.

However, at present only 1,476m of the runway is being used owing to various obstructions, including the trees.

Mohd Ali said the 1,800m runway would be fully operational by Sept 1 and thereafter, would see Firefly’s inaugural flight to Singapore with their Fokker ATR72 airplane.

“The longer runway will allow for Boeing A737 and Airbus 320 to land,” he said.

Mohd Ali said some 1.5 million tourists were expected to enter Malacca via the airport within three years.

How can trees be obstructing the runway, and even on the officiating day, those are NOT removed? This is such a shameful act for not being completely ready. MAHB, again, get your acts together!!!

Well this is what you get when the people you count on to make things happen still bear that "tidak apa" attitude.. If this don't get to your nerve, try visiting Penang's airport (new wing area). You will find "wonderful" things like leaking roof, ridiculous partitions, bla bla... But sincerely, back to this topic, a shortened runway is really so uncalled for.. Haven't they consider all these "mishaps" before even launching the airport? Well according to this report, one thing for sure is that Mohd.Ali will not be chairing his meeting on a wheelchair!! :pardon: Cold joke... hehehe... (psst...I'm back)

So who will get the contract to remove the trees?

MKZ will be a spotters haven because of aircraft types that were never seen before. :sorry:
