Yup , we have another heli that also used for this role, it's a S-70 Whitehawk. we have 2 of its. for the A109 in PUTD, actually its more to transport top brass in Malaysian Armed forces (its also VIP itsn't it?) rather than used for other military mission. i'll try to find this thing in one of the local defence magazine that published last year if i dont mistaken. For the A-109 as shown on the picture, i dont have any idea about it.

Hi, I'm a new member of MW from the UK and would like to share some more helo pics from LIMA 05, If I can manage to upload them OK. I like all things military especially Malaysian and will be back in Langkawi in Dec and then spending Xmas in Penang, with hopefully another visit around Butterworth AFB.

Hi Keith, welcome to MW...

and thanks for sharing those chopper photos

Managed to see them in your first posting,

maybe Photobucket server was downed for a while when Pieter viewed them.

Anyway... those pix are a bit oversized for the forum,

if you could resized them to below 1000px wide,

could be helpful to some of us who're still on dial up,

and lower screen resolutions :pardon:

You could use photobucket 'edit' function for resizing. ;)

See you in LIMA'07 (if you're going, that is..)

TUDN did have a A109 for VIP transport as per the photo. But I think it may have crashed (I recall seeing large parts of it in a big bin near the TUDM -SImpang museum area (now no longer there))

As for LIMA 07 I will be there, although this time only to see the departures, as getting a hotel room has proved difficult !! Maybe something to do with the Red Arrows being there, not that that bothers me as I live in the village next to their base at Scampton and see them practise every day.

I understand the Public days have been reduced to just Saturday, will these mean departures will be on Sunday or will they have rest day and leave on Monday.

Ex-PDRM Mil-17 chopper

You say ex PDRM. I didn't think the PDRM had ever received any Mi-17s. Please can you provide any additional information - where and when the photo was taken, who operates it now etc.

Many thanks for posting the picture and hope you can provide more information.

Hi Geoff,

This photo are taken at SZB hangar for quiet sometimes...Actually PDRM have ordered few units Mi-17s but after that they cancelled the order. This one already painted with PDRM scheme colour, PDRM got some big issue with this helicopter & make them to cancel all the order. The only problem that i've know is...this helicopter is not suitable for patrolling jobs..too big..

Now this helicopter belongs to fire and rescue service (Bomba)...using rego M994-03..as you can see the different with this 3 "Bomba" helicopters only M994-03 got "nose" (wheather radar)..actually this wheather radar is requested by PDRM last time.. :pardon:

I just checked with my friends at Bukit Aman just now...he said last time PDRM have ordered 2 units Mi-17 (M994-03 & M994-04) only M994-03 got PDRM scheme colour at that time, after they cancelled all the order, this 2 units Mi-17 is transferred to Fire and Rescue services. <_>

Last time when i have a visit to RMAF Hangar at SZB...i still can see a few units Mil Mi-17 without any marking or colour scheme...if i'm not mistaken i saw 2 units Mi-17 still stuck there..all in flat green colour..

some news about Bomba helicopters :

"BOMBA" reinforcement

Recently BOMBA Fire and Rescue Air Operation Unit of Malaysia was reinforced by new helicopters. These were a couple of new Mi-171 supplied to Malaysia by Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (U-UAP) in September, 2004. Before BOMBA had operated two Russian Mi-17-1V helicopters made by Kazan Helicopter Plant (supplied in 1998-1999). Efforts of Malaysian engineers converted those aircrafts into fire-fighting. Malaysia authorities, satisfied by the experience from operation of Russian helicopters, made a decision to place an order for a new batch of Mi-17. This time U-UAP was selected as a supplier.

The agreement of supplying a couple of Mi-171Sh helicopters to Malaysia for Ministry of Home Affairs was signed in July, 2003 and simultaneously there were harmonised basic issues on sale of a larger batch of aircrafts from Ulan-Ude, consisting of ten transport-combat Mi-171Sh for Malaysian Ministry of Defense. Solemn signing of this contract between "Rosoboronexport" and Malaysian state company AIROD took place during previous exhibition in Langkawi on October 1, 2003.

Mi-171Sh from Ulan-Ude distinguished from already available in the country Kazan Mi-17-1V by availability of descending rear ramp and "dolphin-shaped" nose dome of the weather radar. Besides there was an intention to apply thereon some western avionics systems and optical-electronic systems of South African companies. Part of western equipment was intended for installation on helicopters directly in Malaysia.

However in 2004 Malaysians decided not to assign two new helicopters to police but annex it to "BOMBA" which was done after U-UAP had supplied to the country two Mi-171 with modified airframe. On-site the aircrafts were equipped with some systems of SAR equipment but no armament systems (as on Mi-171Sh) and western avionics were available there.

Replying to the interview of "Vzlet" reporter about destiny of next ten aircrafts, U-UAP General Director Leonid Belykh intimated that the situation was uncertain: the customer has yet to decide what technical "pattern" of the helicopters is required. Therefore contract performance has been postponed so far. As far as two helicopters from Ulan-Ude already supplied to "BOMBA" are concerned, flight and technical personnel is highly pleased with these aircrafts.

Technicians maintaining Mi-171 told the author that the aircraft has a number of advantages as compared to Mi-17-1V. In the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005 "BOMBA" helicopters were intensively used in relief operation after ruinous tsunami in south-east Asia and earned highest appraisal. Mi-17-1V and Mi-171 belonging to Malaysian rescuers became participants of the flight program at last year exhibition LIMA 2005.

Many thanks for all the information and photos. I had heard that a couple of Mi-17 had been ordered by the PDRM but went to the Bomba, but I never realised one had been painted up in PDRM colours. That's one rare photo you have there.

Could you tell me what markings are painted on the tail please. I can't quite read it on the photo posted.

While on the subjet of PDRM helicopters has anyone got a photo of 9M-PHC the Bell 206L LongRanger that crashed in January 1996.
