What airlines have you been on?

Recommended Posts

To mention another extreme, I once flew with a KLM exel stand-by ticket from EIN to HAM where, without knowing in advance, the flight was operated with an Embraer EMB-120 of Metropolis. This aircraft was in a terrible shape and I was very surprised that Air Exel would ever provide such a bad service. Mind you, this was during the period that Air Exel was going down the drains...

Would admit that's one carrier I've never heard of. :sorry: Are they still flying as KLM or are they on their own now?

Hehe yes getting Air Nostrum and avoiding Iberia would be indeed a bonus! I rerouted my DONE4 in such a way as to be IB-free. :good: Pieter would be happy to know that I'd rather fly KLM over IB. :p

And I initially had that 'no props' attitude until the corporate travel lady booked me on to Qantaslink for my MEL-CBR sector which was operated by a Dash 8. Was apprehensive at first - but the QFlink crews were so much better than mainline domestic QF. Not to mention the all Y config on the Dash 8 has so much more personal space and is heaps comfier than that horrible convertible J seat on the mainline QF 734. So now I encourage her to look out for '4 digit flight numbers' [QFlink flights]. :D But unfortunately the QFlink flights back to MEL all tend to be in the middle of the day which is not very good for us working in CBR trying to catch the last flight home to MEL. :(

Yes I know their service is good - but you can't take the hard product out of the equation. It's like buying a car and asking for recommendations on the best car buying 'experience' and then saying "oh but I don't care about the actual car." For a shorter flight, I'd be inclined to try LA but SYD-AKL-EZE is an awfully long flight and I'd need at least angled flat seats. The TG 773 seating on MEL-BKK back in Dec (a much shorter segment) which is similar and what I call 'glorified Y' was bad enough...*shudders* For a long haul red eye I'd need a good sleep. Pity SCL-SYD is a red eye, because SYD-SCL is a daylight service.

Same reason why I went for BA J over QF J on SIN-LHR even though I normally prefer QF service by heaps.

YMMV of course.

what i meant was that the product isnt really that bad. although they are not lie flat seats, they are comfortable for cradle seats. pitch and recline is generous. i flew the LAX-LIM segment on LAN's 343, 7hr 40min, and really, i had no complaints about the product or the service. and LAN lounge in SCL is fantastico as well.

If LAX-LIM that's borderline midhaul and if a day flight I wouldn't really mind. I don't mind the better cradle seats on such flights, like the QF Dreamtime HNL-SYD. But SYD-EZE with that kind of product would be abject agony. :(

Yes heard great things about LAN lounges - ah well, one day. :)

All I can say is I'm glad I've switched back to oneworld so now South America is more accessible. :D

My list, though not as extensive as most of you guys are as follows;

- Malaysia Airlines (plus Malaysian Airline System and Malaysia-Singapore Airlines before that)

- Pelangi Air (now defunct)

- Singapore Airlines

- Qantas Airways

- Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) (later to become Australian Airlines, and later merged with Qantas)

- British Airways

- Lauda Air (now merged with Austrian Airlines)

- KLM

- Air New Zealand

Biggest regret - not flying with Ansett whilst I was a student in Australia in the 1980s :sorry:

Not so big a regret, but a regret nevertheless - not flying with Lufthansa or JAT Yugoslav Airlines when they were serving the KUL - MEL - KUL sector in the 1980s :o

You mean Air Exel? They're finished now... They started as Air Exel Commuter with flights between Maastricht and Amsterdam / London flying EMB120s. Then they started to operate under the KLM brand name as KLM exel and also got ATRs and ERJ145s. The ERJs proved to be a huge mistake... they flew them from Maastricht to Berlin, Milan and Munich but all these services were terminated. After I left the company, they were intergrated into the ExelAviationGroup and started all kinds of funny operations all over the place, including Africa and the Caribbean, but that didn't last long either.

The CEO of Air Exel, Roberto Stinga, went on to form a new LCC called V-Bird flying out of Niederrhein Airport with A320, but this was short-lived. I think he is now involved with Interstate Airlines... I am sure that Pieter has more details on this.

You can partially rectify that - LH flies KUL-BKK-FRA.

Then maybe when you get to FRA, catch a JAT flight there? :p

Unfortunately AN is well and truly gone. :(

British Interntaional Helicopters - S-61

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Do you know when and in which S61? There's a chance I was sitting at the pointy end.

BTW, great thread. I'll try and put together a list!.

Yo Pieter - just noticed you got the RyanAir deal, the one where they absorb all taxes even APD. Did you have to pay for baggage? Cause people have been getting GBP0.02 all in.

As said before, no bagage, but than had to pay 6EUR for speed-checkin (internet) and fast-lane boarding...couldn't finish the booking without taking this

Pieter, noticed you haven't been on Cathay Pacific before?

Re-check, S V, as have flown with them on L1011, 707, 773 and A343 :pardon:

Sneeze and Norman can attest the latter ones :p

Keith - Yes, for LH it is not such big a regret as they are still around, but the little regret was to miss out on the KUL - MEL - KUL sector in their old B742 in the old livery complete with the dark blue cheatline. The same goes with JAT Yugoslav Airlines as I don't think these 2 airlines will ever again serve KUL - MEL - KUL :sorry:

AN ... and to consider their livery then was the classic 'flying' (Southern Cross) stars ... RIP :(

Hi Geoff,

Well I was based "up North" out of Aberdeen and Shetland. My only time in Penzance was for ferrying aircraft, although I did fly 'FJ on a number of occasions. My last S61 flight was last June, since then I have been flying the much newer S92 with Brunei Shell. Although after 5 years in Brunei I'm just about to head to pastures new and move to Vancouver, although my first posting with CHC will be to Miri :drinks:

To Come (Confirmed): DH8-400 With QantasLink

If it's the same planes I'm thinking of you'll find that the Dash8s are a lot comfier than the mainline 734s - even nicer than the dreadful convertible J seats on the 734. At first I was quite pissed off at the corporate travel lady for booking me on a prop as I don't normally like props -but the QF ones were pretty comfy and I now encourage her to book me on the props for MELCBR. :D Plus the props don't take nearly as long to taxi and take off - handy when you are rushing off to a meeting.

edited to add - just noticed you've got 'DH8-300' in ur list - are they the same things? Never knew whats the exact model number of my props but the seats were exactly the same. :pardon:

Most of the jumpseats are pre 9-11. After that its quite hard to get in to the flightdeck. Had a few chances though..most of them after flight. But the most memorable jumpseat flights for me are : 1. SIA 747-400 SIN - KUL since my friend a off-duty SFO. 2. AirAsia B737-300 KUL - MFM. This is the best for me as both pilots are captains and I learnt much from them!
