FAX: Let Firefly take over

By WONG SAI WAN

KUALA LUMPUR: FAX has made a dramatic offer to the Government – that the newly launched Firefly airline takes over the operations of all rural air services.

FAX director Datuk Tony Fernandes said he made the proposal to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy yesterday as “it was the logical thing to do.”

“We were thrilled with the launch of Firefly and it is now time that the country has a national turbo-prop airline that operates all the Fokker and Twin Otter aircraft.

“I was just waiting for the right time to make the proposal,” he said.

Fernandes said FAX would soon be launching the long-haul AirAsia X operations and “it would be too distracting for us to also operate turbo-propeller aircraft as well.”

FAX, a company that shares common directors with AirAsia, took over the rural air services operations from Malaysia Airlines (MAS) under the national air route rationalisation exercise last year.

Firefly, a subsidiary of MAS, was launched two weeks ago and operates turbo-prop aircraft to various domestic and regional destinations from its base in Penang.

It has started flights to Kuala Terengganu and Kota Baru.

Firefly is also set to fly to Koh Samui in southern Thailand next month.

Fernandes stressed that with the imminent launch of AirAsia X operations, it was imperative that FAX be allowed to concentrate on its long-haul flights.

FAX is operating the rural air services routes with eight turbo-propeller aircraft belonging to Penerbangan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

“There will be no asset transferring problem and PNB can also make the same arrangement for Firefly. As for staff, they can either be absorbed into FAX, AirAsia or even be taken on by Firefly,” said Fernandes.

On when he expected a reply from the Government, he said he hoped that a decision could be made as soon as possible.

Bet he feel the losses is overwhelming for him...if FY take over at East Malaysia, it's not really much of a problem with operation. Everything is there for FY readily.

Operationally, it may be ready for FY, but commercially it may not be. The operating dynamics, from the $$$ point of view, is different in East M'sia than what FY is currently doing out of PEN. There is more social obligation factors thrown into the equation for East M'sia and FY cannot really be charging those same high out-of-pocket fares that it is doing in the peninsula.

Emm How do we complaint to a mis-report article?

Penerbangan Nasional Bhd?.. It doesn't even exist...

PNB= Permodalan Nasional Berhad = Malaysia Unit Trust company

PMB= Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad = Malaysia airplane leasing company

Why on earth Journalists always confused those two entities?

About time we tell the Datuk to shut up. Last time he wants it, and it was given to him. Now he say he don't want it again. So, Datuk Tony, can you make up your mind?To Mr Idris Jala, please stand firm, don't take back FAX operation. Let Datuk Tony chew what he already bitten.

I agree.

Btw, now this old-ish news item makes more sense. He wants FAX out of rural services before more investment.

AirAsia Still In Discussions On Amount Of Investment In FAX

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (Bernama) -- Low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd announced Wednesday that discussions regarding the appropriate form, timing and amount of investment by the airline in Fly Asian Xpress Sdn Bhd (FAX) are still ongoing.

"Should the discussions progress positively then the parties envisage that the relevant agreements will be ready for approvals and execution within six months of the signing of the MoU (memorandum of understanding)," AirAsia said in a circular to Bursa Malaysia.

The airline had entered into an MoU with FAX on Jan 5, 2007.

Among others, AirAsia has granted FAX the right to operate and market its proposed long haul international air services under the "AirAsia" brand name in consideration of which FAX will pay AirAsia an appropriate licence fee or royalty.

FAX has invited AirAsia to participate in 20 per cent of the equity of FAX via a capital injection at par value in FAX, with an option (exercisable within five years) to increase its shareholding to a maximum of 30 per cent at the then prevailing market valuation.

"AirAsia and FAX are working together to finalise the terms of the licence to use the brand name as AirAsia continues to closely monitor the latest developments in FAX's proposed budget long haul services," the airline said.

I'm glad I'm not teh only one who spotted that...yes, his email is there at the beginning of the article. If you are industrious enough, tell him that PMB is not Permodalan Nasional Berhad.

Most local journalists are just not sharp enough...note how very little background research or analysis accompanies each news item?

Probably he only meant the domestic routes in peninsula and trans-south-china-sea flight...

Oh no....not again, probably, Tony find out that it's no longer profitable to him to operates East Malaysia route. Seems like return of the Fokker 50 and Twin Otter to MAS as Fireflyz is a subsidary of MAS also.....why cant Tony make up his mind?

So much for Embaraer or CRJ order from FAX sometimes ago! Now it's ready to close the door. MH shouldn't take FAX operations, let Mr T feel the pain sometimes....Will AK X will have the same fate with FAX? ;)

Fireflyz should not take back those route. Let FAX operate so that they know it not easy to maintain rural area service and made them more responsible on take decision on what they have mentioned.
