100ml limit for liquids, aerosols and gels in hand luggage

Recommended Posts

Understand security check at AKL is at holding gate, after duty free shops.

Wonder how are they enforcing the 100ml limit rule on duty free bottles?

I think it is now easier to list airports that DO NOT have this silly restriction than those that do.

My parents love Australian wine, especially from boutique wineries that we do not export to overseas markets, and I usually bring a bottle or 2 over whenever I visit them. The LAG restriction means I'm now forced to buy 'mainstream' wines at jacked up airport prices rather than going to the Dan Murphy's in town!! :angry:

Here is the latest on this paranoid ruling:

SUBJECT : SECURITY RESTRICTIONS OF LIQUID/AEROSOL & GEL (LAG)

IN MALAYSIA

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Department Of Civil Aviation (DCA) of Malaysia has directed enforcement

on the carriage of LAGs for passengers departing on International Flights

at all Malaysian ports with effect 21st May 2007.

Implementation @ Malaysian Airports

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Malaysia Airports Authority (MAB) will be distributing sufficient
notices/information flyers and set up booths and counters at
various locations within the entrance of the terminal at KLIA to
assist departing passengers to place their LAG into the appropriate
plastic bags which is being provided by MAB.
2. To ensure smooth passengers flow during check-in process, it is
required of the check-in staff to remind and guide the passengers
regarding the restriction on the hand carriage of LAG.
Guidelines for carriage of LAG:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. All LAG or other similar consistency must be in containers with a

capacity not greater than 100 ml (or the equivalent in other

volumetric measurements, e.g. fluid ounces). LAG carried in

containers larger than 100 ml will not be acceptable, even if the

container is only partially filled.

2. Containers of LAG with a maximum 100 ml should be placed in a

transparent resealable plastic bag of a maximum capacity not

exceeding 1 liter. The containers of LAG must fit comfortably

within the transparent resealable plastic bag, which should be able

to completely close.

Exemptions

~~~~~~~~~~
1. Passengers who need medication-medicines; baby milk and food; and
special dietary for use during the flight are exempted but
passengers will need to produce proof.
2. Flight crew in uniform and on duty the day(s) of the journey is
exempted from this requirement.
LAG - exceeding limitations
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Passenger carrying LAG which exceeds the stipulated limitation will

be confiscated by the authorities.

Duty Free Purchases

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. All LAG purchased at duty free shops located before security
screening points at the airport of origin should be placed in a
Security Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) and be presented at security
screening points during transfer(s).
2. LAG purchased at duty free shops or on board aircraft must be
packed and sealed in STEB and show proof of purchase at the airport
duty free shops, or on board aircraft, on the day(s) of the
journey. (Note: Passengers transiting at EU countries or the US
and have with them duty free items purchased at non-EU and non-US
airports may be confiscated by the authorities).
3. Passenger who have purchased duty free item at KLIA and is
bound for Australia will have their purchases delivered at the
boarding gate by the duty free shop assistant.
4. All passengers into Australian airports and on transit must have
their LAG duty free purchases in STEB even if passengers are
terminating their journey.
5. Duty Free LAG purchased either at the station of origin or onboard
any flight may not be permitted at certain transit
airports/countries.
Is it reasonable to expect that the restriction be lifted in one-two years time?
All these restriction is caused by all those crazy terrorist, as long as there are out there, there's no reason to expect these kind of additional security restriction will be lifted. Would be grateful if they (terrorists) didn't come out with any new genius ideas and create more security restrictions.
I hear they deliver the duty free purchases to ur gate at SIN since security happens there - you just have to arrive at the gate an hour before departure.
I hope they'd retain the delivery service even if the LAG restrictions might be lifted in future. :D *wishful thoughts*
Here is the latest on this paranoid ruling:
How does that work for mix-flights, e.g. MH80 to NRT via BKI?
Pax going to BKI will not be subject to these rules but those heading to NRT will be, despite both travelling in the same aircraft. So, one who is intend on doing damage will bring stuff onboard as a domestic pax and leave it on the plane somewhere?
Amongst the airports that I used, I pick HKG as the best in terms of informing, implementing and making it convenient for the passengers to adhere to the gel & liquid security measures.
They have long tables or kiosks located opposite of check-in counters and near all entrances whereby you can get to see large multilingual posters and pick up free plastic ziplock bags. They are easy to understand, and most importantly making it convenient /easy for passengers to follow.
Furthermore, security staff are courteous and ask if you've pack it according to instructions, and if the metal detectors go off, they ask for permission to do a body pat down...unlike KLIA's guards that are really rude, doing pat downs without prior notice, in violation of my civil liberty rights.
Here is the passenger leaflet:
And how is that implemented? The notice/PR clearly says international flights. For pax going to just BKI on MH80, they will clear security at the entrance to the common domestic departure area, and will then head for the gate, whilst those going to NRT will be screened twice, with the second one upon entering the same gate, but just one floor up.
The boarding pass will just say BKI and I doubt the security folks are to recognise or remember flight numbers to determine mixed flights etc.
I have no idea ! Only read about it sometime ago. Anyway, we should be getting first reports soon of the inevitable 'first day' chaos already no ? They've had well over 17 hours experience already !! :)
Checks were done at the X-ray machine just before entering the holding lounge.
In China, the security open all the can and bottle drinks and ask the pax to drink before they allow him to pass through with the drink.
Believe this is a sensible, effective and reasonable test to eliminate acid, corrosive chemical and liquid explosive.
I flew back from SIN on Friday evening and many people here still didn't understand the rules hence a big queue and trash big full if prohibited items.
Yesterday I returned to SIN on MH 611 and was dreading the chaos. To my surprise there was almost no queue and most people had complied because the box containing the Liquids etc was quite empty.
IMHO Malaysia Airports is doing this to comply with international standard, as many airports already have it. We don;t want to read any news report somehwere in the world higlighting that "Malaysia is a terrorist gateway" since our airport restrictions are not as strict as Dubai for example. So in my opinion all this is just "cover my own @ss" kind of thing
The fact that its only for international flights makes me wonder if this ban is solely because of safety...u don't care about those little 737 babies flying domestic?
