MAS & South African Airways Sign Code-Share Agreement

Recommended Posts

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and South African Airways (SAA) today signed a code-share agreement enabling SAA's customers to travel on flights operated by MAS and vice versa.

However, the agreement is subject to obtaining all relevant government and regulatory approvals as of June 1, 2007, said MAS.

SAA's customers will have access to the three direct weekly MAS flights between Johannesburg and Kuala Lumpur.

The partnership between the two carriers will enable MAS customers to easily connect from Johannesburg to other South African points such as Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London, MAS said in a statement today.

MAS' customers will also have access to regional African destinations including Victoria Falls and Harare in Zimbabwe, Maputo in Mozambique, Maseru in Lesotho, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Windhoek in Namibia and Gaborone, Botswana.

In turn, SAA passengers will be able to connect onto MAS flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Langkawi in Malaysia, and to cities in the ASEAN region including Jakarta, Denpasar, Manila, Bangkok and Phuket.

"The partnership will enable us to strengthen our presence in the African market," said MAS managing director and chief executive officer, Idris Jala.

Good news, hope SAA can fly to KUL on the day that MH don't offer. KUL is perfect place but BKK and SIN offer SAA better connections <_ it just gonna be code sharing no more than that....>

There's no reason for SAA to fly to KUL once this codeshare is in place, they get to serve KUL without sending their own plane. If anything they would probably start flying to SIN in addition to SQ services to take full advantage of their Star Alliance partner connections.

I'm suprised that CPT is not in the list, MH should now axe both CPT & EZE and just codeshare on SAA service instead.

Agreed. There's no reason for SAA to fly to KUL and that's why they enter code share agreement with MH.

The whole point of codesharing is to strengthen your own network to a particular destination (like when you have no rights to fly daily), or to serve that destination without flying there yourself. For example, LH is making a lot of money from its Australian market, one of its highest yield market, by selling fares via gateway cities like LAX, BKK, ICN and SIN, all via codesharing with *A partners who fly to Australia from those gateways. By not flying to Australia, the destination is much more profitable than when it flew its own planes here as it now only incurs codeshare costs.
