Malfunction on Bangladeshi airliner injures 14 passengers, shuts Dubai airport

Posted 10m ago

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An apparent mechanical failure damaged the nose of a Bangladeshi airliner during takeoff Monday, leaving 14 passengers injured and closing Dubai International Airport, airport officials and passengers said.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight 006 was accelerating down the runway to take off at 6:30 a.m. when a malfunction occurred that caused its nose to drop to the runway, airport officials said. A tire appeared to burst on the plane, two airport officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

The takeoff was aborted and the airport ordered closed with the plane left on the runway, officials said.

The plane's 236 passengers and crew were quickly evacuated and the injured passengers were taken to a hospital, the officials said. All injuries were said to be minor.

The plane was traveling to the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. Terrorism was not believed to be a factor in the incident, an official said.

The Dubai Department of Civil Aviation announced an eight-hour closure for Dubai International Airport, the busiest in the Middle East, until 2:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT).

Dubai's aviation authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, the DCA said in a prepared release posted on the Dubai airport website.

The incident left thousands of stranded passengers stuck in its two terminals.

Emily Fleckner, 34, an American living in Dubai, was waiting to board a flight to Jordan when sirens blared and a swarm of emergency vehicles dashed down the runway.

"I knew something went wrong," Fleckner said.

The airport's public address system told travelers that all flights had been delayed until further notice, Fleckner said. Incoming flights were being diverted to neighboring Abu Dhabi and elsewhere, airport officials said.

Full load for an Airbus A310 :o

Fortunately, no one was killed in this mishap ...

BG has been struggling with their operation as quoted below:

Dubai Airport Closed After Take Off Incident

March 12, 2007

Dubai Airport, a major international hub, was closed for at least eight hours on Monday after a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft was involved in an accident while trying to take off, officials said.

Fourteen people were slightly injured in the accident, airport officials said. The plane was carrying 236 passengers and crew. No details of what caused the accident at 0630 were immediately available but Dubai civil aviation authorities said they were investigating.

"Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG006 flying from Dubai to Dhaka had a minor accident during take-off," the Department of Civil Aviation said in a statement. "Now the airport will be closed for 8 hours minimum to ensure the runway is safe to use."

Dubai, one of seven emirates comprising the United Arab Emirates, is the major trade and tourism center in the Gulf region. Dubai airport is the busiest in the Middle East and a major hub for transfers between Europe and Asia.

Biman, bailed out by a government loan last year, said in December it planned to lease four aircraft so it could reintroduce some routes it had to cut for lack of airworthy planes. Biman stopped flights to New York, Paris, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Brussels last year due to aircraft shortages.

It has been flying to 21 destinations with a fleet of 13 aircraft, although two of had been grounded awaiting repairs.

How could they take a picture of the aircraft within the airport boundaries ??? :o

Thought it was not allowed to take pictures of aircraft in the UAE

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines Airbus A310-300 has been involved in a take-off accident at Dubai International Airport, resulting in a temporary closure of the Gulf airport.

The A310 – one of four operated by the airline, according to Flight’s ACAS database – was operating a service to Dhaka. Some reports suggest the aircraft suffered a tyre burst and/or nose-gear collapse during its take-off roll. Pictures of the accident show that the aircraft appears to have come to rest at the far end of Runway 12L with its nose gear collapsed.

Biman Bangladesh says that its “flight BG006 from Dubai to Dhaka had an accident during departure and failed to take off around 06:30 today. All 236 passengers, including crew, are safe, and were immediately evacuated from the aircraft. Fourteen passengers sustained minor injuries.”

According to the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, Dubai International Airport is undergoing “an 8h closure starting 06:30, March 12, 2007”.

Dubai Airport open again after plane drama

Gulf News Staff Report

Dubai: Dubai International Airport has been re-opened after an accident in which 27 people were injured on Monday morning.

The airport was closed after Biman Bangladesh Air flight BG006, carrying 229 passengers and crew, skidded along the runway during take-off at around 6.30am.

It re-opened at around 2pm, with the first incoming flights landing approximately 20 minutes later.

Exact details of how the accident happened have yet to be released, but the aircraft - an Airbus A310 - lost a front wheel in the incident, leaving it sliding nose down along the tarmac.

Rescue crews were reportedly on the scene within one minute.

27 passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the airport, while one person was taken to the Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital but later discharged.

A total of 71 flights were affected by the closure, with 36 outbound flights cancelled and 35 incoming flights diverted to other airports.

Planes landed in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah and as far afield as Muscat (Oman), Kuwait and Shiraz (Iran).

Huraiz Bin Huraiz, DCA spokesperson said: "We are operational at full capacity but passengers should check with their respective airlines to confirm the status of their flights.”

A statement on the Dubai Airport website said: "Biman, Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG 006 from Dubai to Dhaka had an accident during departure and failed to take off around 0630am today.

"The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and DCA are investigating the cause of the accident."

Confused passengers tell their stories

Gulf News report

Dubai: Passengers stranded at Dubai Airport have spoken of the chaos after an aircraft skidded off the runway on Monday morning.

Kamyar Broumane, a Belgian businessman of Iranian descent, missed his 8am connecting flight from Dubai to Paris when the Emirates flight from Tehran to Dubai he was travelling on was diverted to Fujairah.

“We were due to land at 6.40am but the pilot was making circles around Dubai. Everybody thought it was traffic, but then he announced we were being diverted because there had been an incident – he said a plane was trying to take off but a wheel broke and it slid off the runway.

“There are quite a lot of people here who were due to transit in Dubai and who wanted to catch other flights. We are just sitting here getting a bit frustrated – they said there would be buses to take us to Dubai but they haven’t arrived yet,” he said.

Ed Barnfield, a General manager from the United Kingdom was due to take off for Nice on an Emirates flight at 7.30am.

“Initially we thought it was just the Gulf flights that had been cancelled, but later on London, Frankfurt and other long-haul flights were announced as cancellations as well.

“There are a lot of people here waiting and tempers have frayed a little bit,” he said.

Barnfield added that there was “a scrum” around the information desks at the airport with passengers struggling to find out exactly what is happening.

“They could do with informing people a bit better. The information services are totally overstretched,” he said.

He said an Emirates staff member told him all flights were being held until 4pm.

Sanjay Swami, and his wife were due to take the Jazeera airways flight J457 to Kuwait at 11.45 and had checked out of their hotel.

News release from CNN:

Dubai jet accident injures 14

Story Highlights

• Dubai airport reopens after an accident involving an aircraft on take-off

• The airport, the busiest in the Middle East, was closed for nearly 8 hours

• Fourteen passengers treated for minor injuries, mostly shock

• The plane had been heading for Dhaka, Bangladesh

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN)-- Dubai airport was closed for nearly eight hours on Monday after the nose gear of an aircraft with 229 passengers and crew on board apparently collapsed during take off.

Fourteen people suffered minor injuries in the accident at the Middle East's busiest airport.

The incident left thousands of stranded passengers stuck in the airport's two terminals as safety officials inspected the runway where the accident occurred.

Flights resumed in and out of Dubai International around 2 p.m. (1000 GMT) and 20 minutes later, an Emirates flight from Islamabad, Pakistan, landed at Dubai, according to Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation.

The closure affected a total of 71 flights: 36 flights that were heading out of Dubai were cancelled and 35 incoming flights were diverted to nearby airports, according to Dubai's aviation authorities.

A photograph showed the nose of the plane, as well as the engines attached to its wings, resting on the runway.

"Safety of passengers is our first and most important priority and I am glad it all ended relatively well," said aviation spokesman Huraiz bin Huraiz.

"The closure of the runway for eight hours was primarily to inspect its condition and ensure that operations could be resumed."

A statement from the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) said Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight 006 "had an accident during departure and failed to take off."

The Airbus A310 had been heading for Dhaka, Bangladesh, when the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. (0230 GMT).

Caroline Faraj, editor of CNNArabic.com, said: "Some officials are saying this was caused by a malfunction in the aircraft and that its heavy weight caused the problem. The injured were treated at a clinic in the airport. The injuries were not serious -- most people were suffering from shock."

An investigation is being conducted by the DCA and the General Civil Aviation Authority.

Emily Fleckner, 34, an American living in Dubai, was waiting to board a flight to Jordan when sirens blared and a swarm of emergency vehicles dashed down the runway.

"I knew something went wrong," Fleckner told The Associated Press.

The airport's public address system told travelers that all flights were delayed until further notice, Fleckner said.

Incoming flights were diverted to neighboring Abu Dhabi and elsewhere, airport officials told AP.

Passengers at the airport were not told the length of the closure and crowded around TV screens to watch news reports of the accident.

"It's crazy, I can't get any sense out of anyone," said Joe Murphy, 73, in transit on the long-haul trip from Australia to the UK.

"All I want to know is what's happening," he told Reuters.

More than 28.7 million passengers and 1.4 million tons of freight passed through Dubai International Airport last year, according to its Web site (www.dubaiairport.com).

According to my sources, debris from the nearly-vapourised nose gear flew as far away as the new EK hangars...causing A6-EAC to be fitted with a new tyre as a metal fragment punctured RIGHT THROUGH the original main gear...

Aircraft is at Tango Six for checks atm.

The nose gear debris has gotten some great distance and managed to have A6-EAC get a new tyre thanks to the metal debris :o  :pardon:
