Choosing MH flight KUL-SYD

Recommended Posts

Guest Tina123

We are flying ARN(Stockholm)-KUL, then having a stopover in KUL, then flying KUL-SYD.

KUL-SYD I am choosing between:

MH 141 09.45 Aircraft 772

MH 123 22.40 Aircraft 744

Questions:

1. How early do we have to leave our hotel in KUL to be on the flight at 09.45 in the morning?

2. Which aircraft is the most comfortable? Do they both have personal screens at each seat, 34" pitch?

3. Is 744=747-400? How old are these planes?

4. Are both planes equally safe?

/Tina

Welcome to MW Tina, looks like you are the first member from Sweden :clapping: :drinks: :good:

Okay, if I were you choose MH 141 B772 because if have never been on a B772(ER) then this is a good opportunity.

Answers to your questions:

2. Actually it depends on the class you are traveling on: First Class, Golden Cub Class, or Economy. But if you are really rich, and want to go on First Class use the B744 because the B772(ER) doesn't do First Class anymore :pardon:

3. 744=747-400- True because it goes like this: 74 (B747) 4 (-400)- B744= B747-400

4. Yes

Cheers :drinks: :drinks:

1- you must leave the hotel at 06:30AM latest. it takes approximetly 1hr by car from KL citycenter to airport. after your check-in, you have 1hr for waiting your flight. (checkin time depends by crowded)

2-all aircrafts are comfortable, be relax, but if you want to get 34", maybe you have buy business class ticket :) .all seats have personal screen, but don't have much more expect about music , videos or game.

3-744 is 747-400 and don't worry about that, 747-400 is calling "queen of sky". this is not important things "age" about 747-400 or 777.

4-If I say, "not safely" do you make cancel your flight? :) ofcourse that are safely aircrafts. Take your books and get back and look your comfort even be fly in economy class.

Questions:

Normally i leave the hotel at 6.00am.

2. Which aircraft is the most comfortable? Do they both have personal screens at each seat, 34" pitch?

Never travelled on MH 744 before. The cabin of the 772 is very classy. The 772 got high ceiling. All MAS 744 & 772 are PTV equiped. Most of their 744 & 772 already have the AVOD system installed. Economy Class on Malaysia Airlines B747-400, B777-200ER and A330-300 all feature 34" of pitch :p

3. Is 744=747-400? How old are these planes?

Not sure about this one. 2-4 of MAS 744 are quite new.

4. Are both planes equally safe?

Yes. MAS got a pretty reliable safety record.

1) I'd leave by 6-6.30. There shouldn't be any rush hour but just in case. Allocate 1-2 hrs for check in and waiting. It takes about 1hr from city centre to KLIA, with little traffic.

2) Both are equally comfortable but i tend to choose the 772 since I like the seat arrangement of 2-5-2 better. 34" pitch? Not too sure. Each has a seat TV located just right on the head rest of the front passenger seat. Business and First class gets added luxury of a personal 15" LCD.

3) Yes, it is the 747-400. Don't know how old they are. I have only been on the 744 once and love the sight of the queen. I was on a BNE-KUL flight. The rest has been on the 772. Both were equally sweet. :)

4) Yes, they are both safe. MAS has pretty good records when it comes to maintenance. :)

By Taxi is 1 hour ride, latest by 630am you should leave your hotel.

By the way which hotel are you staying in KL? Maybe you can consider taking the express train to KLIA (30 minutes ride) from KL Sentral Station and you can check in your luggage at the same time as well.

2. Which aircraft is the most comfortable? Do they both have personal screens at each seat, 34" pitch?

All MAS A330, B772 & B744 features 34 inches of seat pitch, confirmed.

Seating arrangement between 772 & 744 in Y class is 2-5-2 & 3-4-3.

Exactly. Then you won't have to leave so early. Just make sure to arrive at the KL Sentral 2 hours before scheduled departure time. Then you should have enough time to check in and make it to airport with plenty of time to spare.

Both the B744 and B772 will have 34" seat pitch and PTV. So the difference is almost non-existent in this respect between the two aircraft.

Hi Tina,

Welcome to MW.

I have flown both the 772 and the 744 on KUL/SYD sector - they are very comfortable, but I would, personally prefer flying the 772 given its slightly larger legroom. HOWEVER, I prefer the time at which the 744 is scheduled to. In other words, I prefer back-of-the-clock flying where I depart at night and arrive in the morning, so that I get the most out of the day of arrival (in Sydney).

744 and 772 are equally safe - they are maintained to the standards set by the airline so I have no doubt for that. Having 4 engines doesn't necessarily make a twin look less safe. ;)

744 = 747-400. Some could be quite old, but some could be refurbished rather recently. I flew 9M-MPD "Hibiscus" on the KUL-SYD leg earlier in February and it was absolutely pleasing. :D

Have a nice and safe trip. Cheers!

Thanks for all the info. Someone asked me what hotel we had chosen, but havent booked this yet.

I now know a lot more about the planes and about the stopover in KUL. Since we have to leave about 06.30 with 2 jet lagged children (tired in the morning of course, since we flew from Sweden) it might be better with the evening flight to SYD. On the other hand I dont sleep very well on plnaes, so the day flight with the nice 772 might be our best choice.

The reason why I asked about safety was the incident when a 772 dropped engine parts after taking off from Stockholm.

I wonder if we will be on exactly that plane?

If you fly MH141, you could have a chance of getting on the exact same aircraft that had the incident in Stockholm. Seems like you're still concerned - I would recommend MH123 (the 744) in this case. Also, a family of four can just take up the middle row seats. :good:

Cheers.

Yeap, flying 744 is getting boring, 772 offers superior product than 744, at least not until 748i enter the market..................if :(

As a Starwood fan, I'm going to be biased and tell you to look at the following properties in Sydney:

Sheraton on the Park

Westin Sydney

Four Points by Sheraton Darling Harbour

I'll chose Sheraton, awesome Oz coast view!

MH123 also have a personal TV :pardon: . Even though I have never been on MH123 but its a B744 and I have been on one, MH095 <_>

But if you been on a B744 so many times, then choose MH141, a B772(ER) :)

I think you mean the 4P which has a view of the Darling Harbour and is near Circular Quay.

The Sheraton either gets a view of the city or a view of Hyde Park which is very nice.

edited to add - upon looking more closely at the website, I see what you mean about Sheraton having a view of the coast. Only limited to high floors though. Unfortunately this lowly Gold has never managed to get upgrades to those floors, and is too cheapo to pay for them. :p

My favourite is the Westin but it's often at least AUD100 more than the other 2. 4P is great for the value when you get a good rate (ie below AUD150) - otherwise the Sheraton is perfect.

Since this is still about Sydney, it's not OT is it? ;)

Thanks again for all the replies.

When I said that we havent booked a hotel, I mean in KUL for the 2 night stopover.

In SYD we dont need a hotel since my family has a house there.

Oh whoops. There's a recent thread about hotels in KUL in 'Golden Lounge.'

Starwoods in KUL:

Sheraton Imperial, a Luxury Collection property - my favourite!

The Westin Kuala Lumpur - a hit or miss!

Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur - stylish hotel. a bit far from the action but good for catching early morning flights as it's located at KL Sentral; the porter will personally escort you to the MH check in counters.

Other great choices include the Regent, the Mandarin Oriental, as well as the Crowne Plaza Mutiara.

Tina,

The Berjaya Time Square Hotel should be a good choice for you, as it is inside a shopping complex with a playground built inside, so your kids will find a lot of things to do. Besides, it is also located next to a lot of shopping centers and located quite in the center of city means you can move around quite easily.

As it is located next to one of the monorail station, transportation should not be a problem, and the monorail will lead you straight to KL Sentral, where you can check in for your flight and take the KLIA Express train to airport.

Just came back from KUL on MH123 this morning. I've got the chance to try both B772 & B747 on KUL-SYD for the past 1 month. In term of time, I prefer MH123 (night flight), however, since we have 2 children accompanying, B772 is more comfortable.

As usual, the service on all my flights are excellent !
