Kuwait Air To Buy 12 Boeing, 7 Airbus Planes

June 4, 2007

State-owned airline Kuwait Airways (KAC) plans to buy 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and seven Airbus A320s from a local firm that has standing orders for the aircraft, a local newspaper said on Monday.

Al-Watan newspaper said the airline would buy the aircraft from Aviation Lease and Finance Co. (ALAFCO), which has confirmed contracts with the aircraft makers to avoid delays in delivery. It cited sources familiar with the talks.

The paper said KAC and ALAFCO were expected to sign a memorandum of understanding within days after a KAC committee made a "final decision" on the aircraft purchase.

KAC has said it was in talks with Airbus and Boeing to renew its ageing fleet.

The paper said the memorandum of understanding would give Kuwait Airways the option to buy 7 extra A320 planes.

ALAFCO would be able to deliver the A320s in 2009 and the Boeings in 2010.

Kuwait Airways, which currently has 17 aircraft, said in April it hoped to conclude purchase negotiations with Airbus and Boeing by the end of May.

It has said it planned to buy up to 30 planes by 2015, later increase the fleet to 55 and would look at Boeing's 737, 777 and 787 models and at Airbus's A320, A340 and A350.

Aeroflot To Revive USD$2 Bln Boeing Deal

June 7, 2007

Aeroflot will revive a USD$2 billion deal to buy 22 Boeing 787 jets, Kommersant business daily reported on Thursday, citing industry sources.

The deal was frozen in 2006 due to what analysts said was worsening political relations between Moscow and Washington.

In March, Aeroflot announced plans to buy 22 planes from rival producer Airbus despite the fact that the first A350 aircraft may be delivered much later than 2010 - a deadline that Boeing said it would be able to meet.

Kommersant cited industry sources as saying the deal with Boeing will be revived at Russia's landmark economic forum in St Petersburg on Saturday with Boeing and Aeroflot signing a deal for the delivery of planes.

Boeing will also sign a protocol to expand its cooperation with Russia's Sukhoi corporation.

The US firm is already consulting Sukhoi on the design, marketing and production of a Sukhoi Superjet regional airliner and will expand its involvement by agreeing to create personnel training and servicing centers.

Kommersant quoted industry experts as saying the reversal of Russia's position toward Boeing was politically motivated and follows Moscow's failure to gain a bigger involvement in EADS.

Russian state-controlled bank VTB has a five percent stake in EADS, which controls Airbus. France and Germany are EADS' top shareholders.

Aeroflot To Buy 22 Boeing 787s

June 11, 2007

Russian national airline Aeroflot signed a multi-billion dollar deal on Saturday to buy 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft and said it would soon sign a similar deal with Airbus.

Russia has tried to use the deals to play off US Boeing against Europe's Airbus for more than a year as the Kremlin seeks to flex its growing economic clout on the world stage.

"We are very, very pleased that today has arrived," Scott Carson, chief executive of Boeing's commercial plane unit, told reporters after the contract was signed.

"We have been working very hard with Aeroflot for a number of years, helping them identify their requirements," he said.

First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, who oversees Russia's aviation sector, presided over the signing ceremony at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. He congratulated Carson over a glass of champagne.

Asked whether the revival of the order would affect an earlier tentative deal to buy 22 planes from rival Airbus, Aeroflot CEO Valery Okulov said a firm order would be signed later in the year.

"We will sign a firm order for 22 A350s either at Le Bourget or at MAKS," Okulov said, referring to the Paris air show on June 18-14 and its Russian counterpart on August 21-26. "So it will be in the summer."

Okulov said the Airbuses would enter service between 2014 and 2017. Okulov and Carson refused to comment on the value of the deals. Analysts say the deals are worth about USD$2.5 billion each.

Aeroflot will finance the Boeing order with a syndicated loan guaranteed by the US Export-Import bank, Okulov said. He declined to name the investment banks involved in the syndicate.

As part of the agreement, Boeing will cooperate in helping Russian planemaker Sukhoi develop a mid-range passenger jet.

"This represents a modest step for increasing or improving that involvement," Carson said.

The Aeroflot order has been the subject of intense speculation amid chilly ties with Washington and Moscow's failure to take a major stake in Airbus's parent, EADS.

Russia last year took a 5 percent stake in EADS through state-controlled bank VTB, but wishes to boost the stake were politely rebuffed. France and Germany are the main shareholders in EADS.

Concerns over the Boeing order grew last year, when Washington imposed sanctions on Russian arms firms, including Rosoboronexport, because of sales to Iran and Syria.

Rosoboronexport, headed by a former colleague of President Vladimir Putin, controls VSMPO-Avisma, the world's largest supplier of titanium products to the aerospace industry, including Boeing and Airbus.

Aeroflot's biggest competitor in Russia, S7, formerly Sibir airlines, last week signed a deal for 15 787s with the first deliveries expected by 2014.

Aeroflot is keen to buy as many foreign planes as possible to retire its old Soviet fleet and is seeking to expand in Europe by acquisitions.

Okulov confirmed Aeroflot had bid for Serbian flag carrier JAT Airways. Aeroflot is also in a bidding contest for Italy's Alitalia together with bank Unicredit.

Emirates Boss Says Airbus Closing In On Boeing 787

June 18, 2007

Emirates said it would decide on an order worth up to USD$20 billion for mid-sized planes by October and that the design of the Airbus A350 XWB was closing in on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.

Emirates President Tim Clark told reporters on Monday he was ruling out splitting the order for as many as 100 planes between the two manufacturers.

Boeing has accused Airbus of touting an incomplete design to airlines in its bid to draw attention from the hot-selling 787.

Airbus, which revamped and relaunched the A350 last year with a wider fuselage after airlines rejected an earlier design, said it had locked in the plane's main design features.

"We know as much as we need to know about the plane (the A350) to contribute to the decision process," Clark said.

"From what we have been given on performance and economics, irrespective of how it is produced, it looks like a good machine," he said. "I think it'll do the job."

At stake are the fuel-efficiency and other performance measures needed to win control of an estimated market for some 5,000 long-distance twinjet planes over the next 20 years as airlines brace for little relief in high fuel costs.

So far, Boeing is five years ahead of Airbus in terms of development and dominates sales in the segment with nearly 600 orders.

But Boeing's initial success in selling the 787 -- it is sold out until 2013 -- has restored the balance between the two planemakers for potential customers prepared to wait until the A350 enters service from that year.

Airbus is resisting pressure from at least one of its customers, major aircraft leasing firm ILFC, to change the way it builds fuselages after Boeing opted for new technology allowing it to build the tube out of composite barrels, reducing parts.

The European planemaker says it will build the A350 out of similar lightweight composite materials but keep them shaped in traditional panels riveted to an aluminium and titanium frame.

Clark said he believed Boeing's barrel idea was the plane of the future but would not be a deal-breaker for the next order.

"It doesn't make much difference to me. We'll look at the aircraft for the longevity we need, which is 15 years maximum."

Boeing's 787 enters service next year, five years before the first A350s to be flown by Qatar Airways, which placed a USD$16 billion firm order for 80 of the 270-to-350-seat jets on Monday.

"The gap between the two twins has narrowed in the last six months," Clark said, speaking after Emirates ordered another eight of the larger A380 superjumbos to bring its order to 55.

Clark said Emirates was prepared to wait to make its decision to get the right plane in the mid-sized sector. It would prefer the A350 to be offered with two potential engine suppliers, rather than the current offering of only Rolls-Royce engines.

General Electric is still in talks with Airbus about whether to put its GEnx engine on the A350 as well as the 787. If Emirates does order the A350 soon, it will probably keep its options open on the engine supplier, Clark said.

Clark said external issues such as Dubai capacity expansion needed to be resolved before the airline could place an order for the A350 or the 787 but that this should be a matter of months.

"We know we'll need 45 to 50 aircraft as replacements (for earlier models). Then growth could take us up to 100."

To head off Airbus's attempts to fight back with its largest version of the A350, Boeing is considering adding a third and larger version of the 787 and has already started offering it on an informal basis to the market as the 787-10, executives say. The 787-10 being mooted would stretch the 250-290 seat 787-9.

Boeing Wins USD$8.8 Bln ILFC Order

June 19, 2007

Boeing has won a deal to supply more than 60 planes worth USD$8.8 billion to ILFC, which said there was strong demand by airlines for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

International Lease Finance Corporation, the world's largest plane leasing company by fleet value, has ordered 50 787 widebodied aircraft and has an option for two more 787s, which the US planemaker said it was exercising.

ILFC also ordered 10 737 planes and one 777-300 ER plane.

The two 787 options and the single 777-300 ER had previously been listed on Boeing's company web site as options attributed to an unidentified customer.

With today's deal, ILFC is the largest customer of the 787 with 73 787-8 planes and one 787-9 on order.

"We are experiencing strong leasing demand from airlines all over the world for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner," ILFC Chief Executive Steven Udvar-Hazy told reporters.

ILFC has a portfolio valued at more than USD$48 billion, consisting of about 900 jet aircraft.

Delta To Decide Big Fleet Order In 2007

June 19, 2007

Delta Air Lines is poised to start replacement of its widebody fleet, and will likely decide by the end of the year whether to go with Boeing's popular 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350 XWB, a Delta executive said at the Paris Air Show.

"We do need to make a decision really by the end of this year on the 767 replacement, because we will need to start taking those in 2013-2014," said Jim Whitehurst, Delta's chief operating officer, in an interview the show.

Delta, which emerged from a spell in bankruptcy earlier this year, is still weighing up the competing planes, according to Whitehurst.

"We have been waiting until the numbers are fully firmed up (on the A350)," he said. "We will be assessing the 787 versus the A350 as we go forward this year."

The Wall Street Journal Online reported earlier on Tuesday that Delta is set to order as many as 125 Boeing 787s this year, worth about USD$20 billion at list prices.
