This is good progress. AK will surely benefit. A pity Singapore is missing.

M'sia, Indonesia & Thailand Harmonise Civil Aviation Laws

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand have signed a landmark agreement to harmonise civil aviation laws aimed at facilitating the operations of budget carriers, Civil Aviation Department director-general Datuk Kok Soo Chon said Tuesday.

The agreement was signed yesterday between the civil aviation authorities of the three countries in Sepang.

"Although all the three countries are ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) members, in terms of the working level, there are several differences among the three countries," Kok said

"Therefore, in order to smoothen the operations of the airlines, we have agreed to harmonise the existing aviation laws in four key areas -- pilot age, certification, duty of pilots and usage of aircraft," he told reporters here.

Kok was met after the opening of the EU-Asia civil aviation cooperation project general steering committee meeting by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy.

Under the new agreement, which will mainly benefit AirAsia's regional operations, the civil aviation authorities of the three countries agreed, among others, to standardise pilots' retirement age at 65.

Currently, this is set at 60 in Malaysia and Indonesia and 63 in Thailand.

The second area of the agreement is to allow pilots to certify the aircraft for flying while the third is to allow engineers in respective countries to certify each other's aircraft.

Currently, different rules apply in the three countries, potentially causing delays in flight operations.

The fourth area of the harmonised agreement is to allow aircraft from Malaysia or Indonesia to be freely substituted in case of a Thai AirAsia aircraft being grounded.

and tenure for airline pilots have been increased to 65 years.. :drinks: great news !but this would actually mean that the junior pilots will get promoted slower as natural attrition rate of pilots will be reduced.. <_<

Not to worry, Simon. Right now the growth of airline traffic far outstrips the growth in the number of pilots. If things go on as they do now, they may have to increase the age limit of pilots to 75 to keep airplanes flying. U.S. statistics of late show a DECLINE in the number of new student pilots. Apparently, youngsters complain that other jobs take less training and yet pay more.

hmmmm 'other jobs which take less training and yet pay more?'..he's refering to the US..but what about in malaysia?any job that takes less training than a pilot needs and yet pays more ? lets discuss

1.lawyers(nope,they study hell a lot than we do and the starting pay won't be as high as RM8k per month i presume?)

2.doctors(nope,the 'training' part doesn't need to be discussed, and docs nowadays dont earn much especially if you're working for gov hospitals 'less ur a specialist doctor..)

3.engineers(no again, with 4 years of education and training at U compared to 2 years of a pilot, with a general starting pay of rm2k plus per month)

the list goes on and on....but then again,i'm only talking on a 'general' sense...not specifically..so you can't refute me by saying that bill gates's in the IT field and he's the richest man in the world..

I've never see anyone getting younger. Personally this statement is really kind of selfish, wherever it is said, and this is not the first time I say this.

Anyway pilots don't make as much as people think, especially here in Malaysia. We started above average, but at around 10 years of working your colleagues in other industry will catch up. By retirement age others will have made much more.

sorry capt.my post was never intended to offend anyone.. :( you were right..people dont get any younger n we shouldn't be impatient to get promoted..this might means that promotion is slower but in return we all get to work 5 years more..which cancels it out..i just realized that...
