Latest news from Air Asia:

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Low cost carrier AirAsia says it flown more than 20 million passengers over the last five years.

The airline surpassed its 20 millionth passenger mark in June this year, Kathleen Tan, executive vice president of AirAsia said Friday.

AirAsia now operates from six hubs, the latest two being Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Tan said the company's website, www.airasia.com, was now one of the most popular e-commerce websites, recording a monthly average of 60 million impressions and one million unique visitors from more than 200 countries each month.

"Sixty-five percent of our transactions are booked online," she said, adding that it was a strong indication that Asians today were embracing Internet technology and enjoyed the convenience of online transactions.

Tan disclosed that AirAsia had achieved over 90 percent loads on its Kuching and Kota Kinabalu flights in recent months.

The airline has to date carried 3.3 million passengers from Sabah and 3.7 million from Sarawak alone.

"Travelling between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak has been never been the same since our low fares entered the market," she said, adding that AirAsia had stimulated air traffic movement and developed new routes to places like Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Sandakan and Tawau from Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

"Our low fares have also helped to stimulate growth of domestic tourism, attracting a diverse spectrum of travellers, ranging from students to holidaymakers. We have also seen the growth of SME (small and medium scale enterprises) business traffic as well as foreign tourists," said Tan.

She said AirAsia was delighted to have been able to help promote national integration and stimulate the local economies of Sabah and Sarawak.
