Fairul 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 im not suprised if they will close the runway for resurfacing...off all the airports in Malaysia, based on the test that we did, PEN is the worst..heard rumours that they will extend the runway to the sea ( reclamation for sure ) and close down certain parts of the old runway...thats what i heard from MAB staff
Norman 1 Report post Posted July 10, 2006 PEN has runway/taxiway problems ever since its first built... That what you get when you've structures on soft ground Don't get me wrong... there wasn't any hanky panky going on Just that you've "extra problems" when you build something on this type of ground. If you've other choice, you move out, otherwise make full use of engineering knowledge to minimise the problems. And for Penang Island, that's the best place BTW... JKR setup its own laboratory unit when PEN was being built ie... they knew then that they going to face these problems. The unit has grown into what was known as IKRAM when somebody bought it out of JKR and privatised it in 1997
Fairul 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 PEN has runway/taxiway problems ever since its first built... That what you get when you've structures on soft ground agree on you bro..parts of the runway is built on 'bendang'@paddy field...thats the reason why the structure of the runway is very weak..hence, all the cracks here and there..and uneven surface.. aha..here's the photo of PEN tarmac..just to give you guys rough idea on how bad the condition is in PEN.. there's even part of the cracks between the slabs..they just filled it with woods..wonder why.. Fairul 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2006 Wow Fairul, never look at the tarmac actually.. Just filled with woods? What if one day it cracks again when aircraft moving on it? it just a minor crack here and there..but still..the tarmac can 'deterioriate' further if no action taken.... one of the MAB HQ staff ( the high rank one..so can believa la..) told me that one time..engine blast from the plane blew parts of the patching on the runway...
