MH124 PER-KUL Returns to PER

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just got wind of some news that MH 124 [9M-MRG] operating PER-KUL today (1st Aug 05) has returned to Perth with some "major" electrical problems as reported by the local media (who always tend to sensationalise these particular events). Had a look at Perth ACARS and can see that there are numerous faults from the Central Fault Display. I'm not the best at interporating these messages, so if anyone could help out, and let me know what these following messages mean.

Yeah, typical of the media really.

"The West Australian" details in their headline: "Plane drops 200m in horror flight".

Here's excerpts from the report I noted were particularly concerning:

"Nearly 200 passengers on board a Malaysia Airlines flight endured 30 minutes of hell last night when their aircraft dropped nearly 200m..."

"Then the cabin crew went by and started panicking, one of them went pale in the face."

This next one is quite disturbing given the headline and the opening paragraph above:

"Some guy said we dropped 200m".

No mention in the article of the safe and uneventful landing. Kudos to the pilots in charge, I'm sure TK will know of them. They did a magnificent job of bringing the 777 in given the apparent difficulties with flight control, and instrument failues. The Autothrottle too also failed.

For anyone interested here are the links to the ATC communication between Perth and MH124 last night. The files are in MP3 format and are from the site www.jetspotter.com of which fellow MalaysianWings member Liam Gibb is moderator (hope its ok if I post a link to that forum from here Liam).

No doubt the pilots are cool under such situation, but I can feel the tension listening to it. I've been on 9M-MRG twice this year, coincidently on one of the flights we experienced clear air turbulence, which was scary to me.

But anyway glad it returned safely. The news reports stated that the passengers cheered upon landing, must have been a great relief for everyone. Especially when one of the FA had started praying. However I hope the cause of this incident is investigated and discovered to prevent a repeat. Could it have been interference from a personal electronic device?

PASSENGERS panicked and a flight attendant prayed after a plane plunged 200m forcing the pilots to fly back to Perth for an emergency landing.

About 200 passengers were on board the Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur which was forced to return to Perth International Airport after the plane experienced problems about 40 minutes into the journey.

Passengers panicked after one flight attendant dropped a tray of drinks and another began praying.

Kim Holst, who had never flown before, said the plane began shuddering violently and dropping more than a hundred metres at a time over a period of about 90 seconds.

Staff appealed for passengers to ensure all electrical equipment was turned off because they were experiencing interference with the systems, Mr Holst said.

"When the flight attendant dropped an entire tray of drinks and was crawling on his hands and knees back to his seat and the other flight attendant was praying, that's when most of us began to take it a bit more seriously," he said on ABC radio today.

Advertisement:

Other people on board the flight were screaming and upset, he said.

"It was my first flight and I actually didn't realise it was that big a deal, but when I started looking around at the people who had travelled a bit and they were all clutching their seats ... they were like 'oh my God, this is not right," Mr Holst said.

A West Australian police spokesman said the pilots reported instrumentation problems and a full emergency response was waiting for the Boeing 747 when it returned to Perth yesterday.

"Officers from Westralia Airports confirmed the aircraft landed safely," a police spokesman said.

Mr Holst said the passengers all cheered when the plane touched down about 5.30pm (WST) without further incident.

Mr Holst said he would fly to Malaysia this afternoon, but other passengers had missed connections to destinations including China and France.

Sandeep, hows things going?!

Yes, this incident has been blown miles out of proportion. I don't believe it was near as major as they, the media, have made out. This afternoons MH124 was 30mins delayed and the media reported that as a technical fault with the a/c, but thankfully Malaysia Airlines confirmed it as routine. Guess what is was! Tyre change on the bloody nose gear!

Can someone please teach our media correspondents some air rec skills. most called it a 747 and for the few that got it right, usually class anything smaller than a 737, a "cessna"!

You just can't win with the media!

thumbs up for the pilots! looks like it was not major after all. turned back and made a smooth touch down. passenger safety intact!

but these irresponsible reporters, apart from exaggeratting the event, their failure to mention the right type of aircraft is frankly an insult to me as an enthusiast. i am sure it is to all of us here.

some of these newscasters may look soooooo gorgeous on tv but their general knowledge most of the time.............hehe no comment! they should read more and spend lesser time infront of the mirror.

But the pilots reported that they were unable to control the aircraft , requested longer tracking distance from the runway , reported that they also lost instruments .

Someone said there was a handphone being used?? Can anyone confirm that..i am sure thats gonna be made a major issue if it is true, pax never learn the danger of handphones on board..so this might be a good publicity of the danger of handphones. Well yeah..good job to the flight crew..everyone on board. My dad was called in to conduct CISM on the crew today (CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS MANAGEMENT) but they rescheduled it for tomorrow because the captain had to attend some inquiry. I am sure when he speaks to them tomorrow there will be a lot more info i will be able to obtain, so i will keep u guyz updated then k!...The media..well..they can never stop..dumbness..and exaggeration..as usual..i am thinking of calling up The Star and complaining bout it...but lets just see how it goes...

I guess we got Hollywood to blame for that...how many movies have you and I seen where even the pilot can use a cellphone in the cockpit in flight?

BTW ,wasn't one of the passengers aboard one of the four hijacked airliners during 911 used a cellphone too ( to inform of the hijacks)? How was that possible? Do cellphones work over 10,000ft (i.e. got coverage)?

There are some idiots....like myself who accidentally had my mobile switched on during flights and didn't realise it until the plane landed and when I attempt to switch on my mobile.... dang, better be extra careful next time.

When I was flying at Sabah from Tawau to KK, a lot of "Orang Utan" (uncivilised ones) were told to switch off the mobile, but just didn't do it. They continued to have their phones on. When the Fokker F-50 I flew nearly landed at BKI airport, a few of them made a call to the cellphone..... The F/A didn't do anything...

Pass on my comendments to Capt Norhisham and his FO for their professionalism, and excellent handing of not only the a/c, but the incident in general. They are a credit to Malaysia Airlines.

The ATSB are now investigating the possible interference by a Cellular phone (handphone/mobile phone) as a direct cause of the problems with the autopilot. For such an incident to occur, it seems more than one mobile would have to be involved. May they find the cause, and those responsible prosecuted under the highest power of the law.

As the black box and flight data recorder are being analysed in eastern Australia, Romeo Golf remains grounded in PER.

Imran, your only young, but they do ask you (repeatedly) to turn off your phone for a reason!

Yup, dont worry bout that. Apparently they are going to conduct the CISM session tomorrow..not too sure yet though. About the handphones, well it is a very likely cause of the incident, and ATSB have even confirmed that based on what happened, an electronic device could be the cause. As said before, lets hope those responsible would actually be brought to the face of justice. And by the way,, my dad told me, that there was once when they were making an ILS approach into Colombo, and the A330-300 suddenly took a left turn about 90 seconds from touchdown. The F/A caught a guy trying to make a call. See..thts..juz how it could be..anyway everyone here..plzzzzz switch ur phone off next time..they dont have the advise just for the sake of it right..

Do cellphones work over 10,000ft (i.e. got coverage)?

Something new guys!! Well after asking my dad some questions i found some answers. The handphones dont have coverage above 25,000 ft. By the way, according to him also, on his flight CDG-KUL this morning, the aircraft lost altitude over Iran totalling to almost a few hundred feet due to the shut down of one of the generators on board. However thats nothing serious as the plane still flies with one generator functioning well. On the other hand, it comes to my realisation, if MH 124's incident actually occured and yet the plane continued its journey and landed safely at KUL...would anyone actually make a big thing bout it? i mean the media might not even know bout it..or might not know how to make a big deal out of it since it completed its journey as usual. Wierd isnt it the human insticts. Well, like i said before..this type of incidents has happened b4..many times..pax using their hp during an ILS approach..and autopilot gets disenggaged..and aircraft swerves...and yet not a single one reported in media juz because everything went on as usual after that. Anyway, lets wait for the CISM session to be completed ..and i will be back with more stories from the captain, FO, and rest of the crew..!!...this time...since its from them..it'll be the truth..and nothing but the truth..lol..
