Airports in Malaysia

Recommended Posts

How many airports in Malaysia can handle B747, and A330/B777 currently ?

Also, how many airports can handle A380 at the moment, or has been planned for near future ?

Thanks.

In Sarawak,KCH could handle A330/B777s.But i'm not sure about BTU and MYY.But i think BTU could accomodate B747,as it had touched down during the opening of the new BTU airport. There's also B747 of MASKargo touching down at BTU.Maybe MYY could accomodate B747.

As for my hometown,SBW airport is being upgraded so it could accomodate A330s.The taxiway has been completed, and the runway extension project has been planned.

BKI can handle B747, A330 and B772. BKI Gate 1 can handle all heavies except 380/346/773*, Gate 2 can handle all except 380/346/747/773*, Gate 3 and 4 can handle only narrowbodies such as 320/737/757*, Gate 5 can handle all except 380/346/747/773*. Gate 6 F50/737/320. Based on the spotting pics on 10th May, I believe BKI can handle 3x 330/772 at one time and 1x 747, 1x 330/772 at one time.

*=maybe

SDK can handle 330/343/772, TWU I think also can handle 330/343/772. LBU I think also can handle 330/343/772 since mid 90's Sultan of Brunei do touch and go there with 310/340/747/762 and BI also touch and go with their 757 and 763. Sultan of Brunei also did do Touch and Go at all mentioned airport before.

Feel free to correct me :)

Miri (WBG) - Runway 02/20 - 2745 x 60 meters

Wow, Only if the Runway was Longer an A380 could certainly land at Miri..

So KLIA and MIRI are the only airport that are 60m Wide..Would have expected Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu to be abit more wider..

3200m x 60m

But the 747s have been landing at Kota Kinabalu.

Kota Kinabalu (WBKK) - Runway 02/20 - 2987 x 46 meters

Would expect the A380 to need longer runway due to heavier load.

Not many airports in the world boast a 4000m runway, KLIA is one such airport. Even HK and Guangzhou International is only 3800m.

Thanks KK Lee, yeah true, The 747 flight (9M-MPB Shah Alam) I was on in year 2000 from KLIA to BKI was only 60-70% full at max.

Is it true that BKI's runway will get lengthened in due course? Has the project even started yet?

SV, no runway works yet to be seen. So far it's only the terminal side. Providing bigger terminal and more aerobridges are top on the list than having a long runway now hehe. No pax taking a 734 wanna walk down using the staircase at Gate 6 right? Especially rainy days now. :p Plus the runway currently serve nicely for temporary until they start the runway extending works. Still what they really need now also a parallel taxiway. Seen 3 MH 734 at T2 waiting for another MH 734 coming in and AK started up the engine but can't taxi yet; waiting for the MH guys to leave the T2 taxiway. Delays are also because of this too.

SV,

Some update here

IIRC, runway length will be something like 3.8km upon completion of redevelopment

We're eagerly waiting here to see if they will come out with a model of the proposed outcome - helps to get our bearings right !

Darn new perimeter fencing?! It's gonna give us spotters more hard time if the fence turn out to be tall when it's done.

KOTA KINABALU: Construction work on Malaysia’s second low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) at the international airport here is set to kick off next week following the ground-breaking ceremony tomorrow.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the construction of the LCCT at the site of Terminal 2 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) was part of the RM1.4bil expansion project for the airport.

“This project will enable the Kota Kinabalu airport to become a low-cost carrier hub within the region,” he said yesterday upon his arrival here for a three-day visit.

The contract for the LCCT is part of Package Two of the KKIA expansion project, costing some RM720mil and awarded to Global Upline Sdn Bhd.

The package also includes extending and rehabilitating the existing runway for unrestricted Boeing 747 operations, and building a new control tower, perimeter fencing and drainage.

Package One of the expansion works, also costing some RM720mil, has been awarded to WCT Engineering Bhd and it includes the construction of a new main terminal building, upgrading of the airport’s access road and provision of an inline baggage system.

Thanks for keeping blokes like me, who lives in a foreign land, updated!! Really feel home sick now.... :( :(

Hope to meet up with you guys at KK when I am returning to Tawau and KK during November this year!

Isaac, BC, Adrian and Samuel you guys are on my list :)

Yeah, saw them installing 'frames for barriers' at the spot where Samuel (and myself) snapped shots of the MyTravel 333 earlier - you know, the approach road to arrivals. I guess when they do start work proper, much of the place will be out of bounds. But upon completion, I reckon the spot opposite the railway station will provide a very attractive vantage point for us, the // taxiway might run quite close to perimeter :yahoo:
