Malaysia to see entry of new ultra low-cost carrier MYAirline

That makes sense. Because there are so many airline popping out of Indonesia that I don't even know it existed. My friend who used to work in Jakarta told me if he can't get there on Garuda, he's not going because of the safety records of some airlines (some exceptions given to Indonesia Air Asia and Batik Air, lower on the list compared to GA but it's not on his no-fly list).

The aviation industry there was very messy that the authority went for a big cleanup. It has improved significantly but u do still have some holes here and there still but its a lot better than what i've seen prior to 2015 which was insane and huge mess. Though they may have to check back again with control as Jokowi is seeking to open up again which may pose uncontrolled issues to repeat itself.

Apart from our regular myairline we also have 1 casualty Myjet express cargo airlines. I think they only have 1 737 classic freighter left stuck in senai and most of the crew and engineers left. They used to have a very active Facebook account that has also been disabled now. The only good thing it is a pure cargo airline with minimal impact on consumers endusers. Raya airways and Kargo express might be feeling the heat as well with the cargo demand resetting itself as most parcels are now being repurposed back into 737/a320 lower deck cargo.

If Raya/Kargo Express goes under, it wouldn't go viral because it doesn't affect a lot of people. People will just be like "those airlines exist?". No one even spoke about MyJet 😂 Not even worth reporting in the news media.

For domestic sector, there shouldn't need regulatory approval. the more regulatory, the more corruption and the higher cost.

How many times deregulation have screwed up multiple essential industries and given us subpar or greedy profit driven products and services. Deregulation of the banking and finance industry cause a few mortgage and financial crisis in the past.

While MAVcom is inefficient and should be consolidated into CAM since day 1 i see certain checks are still needed especially domestic where it is still under the sensitive essential services. Its stupid to allow anyone to come in and pull out less than 3 months into the operation. Even Japan, Indonesia and thai domestic air travels are subjected to route permits from regulators.

AirAsia leases four planes previously operated by MyAirline- Bo Lingam

Quote

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd has leased four Airbus A320-200 aircraft previously operated by MYAirline Sdn Bhd.

AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd group chief executive officer (CEO) Bo Lingam said AirAsia had previously leased three of the aircraft before the COVID-19 pandemic from lessor AirCastle Ltd. They were subsequently returned to the lessor and MYAirline leased the aircraft from the lessor.

"When MYAirline stopped operating, the lessor asked if we wanted these planes. We also needed the capacity for next year,” he told Bernama, adding that all the leasing processes have been completed to date.

MYAirline suspended its operations on Oct 12, 2023 after less than a year due to financial pressures. The suspension is pending a restructuring and recapitalisation.

Of the four aircraft, he said two of the A320 will be flying on Dec 15 and 16, while the third will be flying in January next year. He did not specific the timeframe for the fourth plane.

MYAirline secures investor from the Middle East - sources

https://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2024/01/12/myairline-secures-investor-from-the-middle-east---sources

KUALA LUMPUR: MYAirline Sdn Bhd has secured and signed a sale and purchase agreement (SPA) in late December 2023 with an investor from the Middle East, sources said.

Without citing the name of the investor, sources hoped MYAirline could now work towards resuming operations by the middle of this year.

"The first action item hopefully is the payment of salaries and refunding passengers,” a source told Bernama.

As the new investor is now on board, the airline is believed to have applied to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) for a conditional air service licence (ASL), thereafter uplifting the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) before obtaining a full ASL to operate.

Bernama contacted Mavcom about the airline’s ASL application and was told that Mavcom would only initiate the evaluation process upon receipt of a complete submission.

Transport minister: 51pc of MYAirline must be owned by Malaysian company, despite interests from the Middle East

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2024/01/12/transport-minister-51pc-of-myairline-must-be-owned-by-malaysian-company-despite-interests-from-the-middle-east/112024

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 12 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke today said that any new buyers for troubled MYAirline must fulfil several criteria before they can purchase the airline.

He said even if they have the money to buy the airlines entirely as per local law the majority owner or 51 per cent of the company's ownership must still go to a Malaysian company.

“We are not sure what the proposal is but we are meeting them today, shortly,” he told reporters when met at the Ministry of Transport (MoT) headquarters in Putrajaya.

“We want to know what are the proposals, and the status right now and our priority is whatever application they make, a few conditions must be imposed if they want to restart the operations. They must make sure all refunds previously must be made and whatever deals offered to the staff must be paid. If they meet these two conditions we can talk.

Loke to meet MYAirline after carrier reportedly secures Middle East investor

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2024/01/12/loke-to-meet-myairline-after-carrier-reportedly-secures-middle-east-investor/

The payment of salaries and passenger reimbursement will be the new investors’ top priority, reports Bernama.

PUTRAJAYA: Transport minister Loke Siew Fook will meet troubled low-cost carrier MYAirline Sdn Bhd after it reportedly signed a sale and purchase agreement (SPA) late last month with an investor from the Middle East.

“I’ll be meeting them (MYAirline) shortly. (I want to) hear from them first… I’m not sure what the proposal is,” Loke told reporters here today.

“There are a few conditions that will be imposed if they want to restart operations. They must make sure all their passengers are refunded and they must make sure whatever (is owed) to their staff must be paid.

“If they can fulfill these two conditions, only then can we start to talk.”

MYAirline abruptly suspended operations on Oct 12 last year after citing “severe financial challenges”, 11 months after it took to the skies.

I don't think they have any more A320s left. I only saw 9M-DAB in storage in KUL recently, not sure if the owner has any new customer lined up. 9M-DAG is in airasia.com livery but stored beside Gate J4.

MYAirline's future in limbo as Middle Eastern investors pull the plug on cash-strapped carrier?
By BILQIS BAHARI - February 29, 2024 @ 8:44am

https://www.nst.com.my/business/corporate/2024/02/1019199/myairlines-future-limbo-middle-eastern-investors-pull-plug-cash

KUALA LUMPUR: MYAirline Sdn Bhd's supposedly final lifeline to resume operations is believed to have come to an end as its potential new investors are said to have pulled the plug albeit not on the 11th hour.

Business Times learnt that the potential new Middle Eastern investors decided not to pursue their interest any longer in the financially troubled low-cost carrier (LCC).

"There is bad news. The new investors for MYAirline have pulled out from MYAirline," sources told Business Times.

The break-up of the deal raises questions on the status of the refund payment that MYAirline had to pay to some 125,000 customers, the unpaid salaries and remuneration that it owes to its employees as well as the bills that are yet to be paid to its services providers.

Business Times has contacted MYAirline for comment and yet to receive a response as at press time.

On Feb 6, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed that MYAirline's 10th and final Airbus A320 aircraft had been deregistered.

Currently the airline, which was established to stir the domestic and regional LCC markets, is fleetless.

It also does not have the air operator certificate (AOC) and air service licence (ASL) - two certificates that airlines need to have to operate a scheduled commercial airline operations in Malaysia.

One of the requirements for AOC issuance and renewal based on CAAM's Civil Aviation Directives (CAD) - 6004 is that an airline that wants to operate scheduled flights must have a minimum fleet of two aircraft.

On Jan 26, CAAM told Business Times that it had extended the suspension of MYAirline's AOC for another three months until April 14.

Another aviation regulator, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) had previously confirmed that it had received the new ASL application from MYAirline.

The carrier would need to secure a conditional ASL from Mavcom first before re-applying for AOC from CAAM and back to Mavcom for a full ASL prior to resuming its flight operations.

On Feb 7, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said he had met with MYAirline and its potential new investors and discussed on the way forward for the airline and how it would position itself should it resume operations.

When asked if the new investors were from the Middle East, Loke said MYAirline had informed the ministry that there were partners from the Middle East and a local company.

On Jan 12, Loke said a few conditions must be imposed before MYAirline could be back in business.

These included ensuring that all refunds are paid to affected passengers and payments to its staff are made as well.

"Without these two (conditions) no way, we can't compromise on this and thirdly in terms of their safety and such they must follow normal procedure," Loke was quoted by local media.

The new investors will burn few millions dollars even before his/her new airline takes off. Who in the right mind would want to do so? Unless those cryptocurrency, scammers want to burn off their ill gotten money.

Well well, they are talking to new investors now....This cat really has nine lives.

MYAirline in talks with new investors

Thursday, February 29th, 2024 at Business | News

KUALA LUMPUR — MYAirline said it is in talks with “promising new investors after a sudden and unilateral termination of a share purchase agreement by an investor from the Middle East.”

“In respect of this termination, all options are being considered, including possible legal action,” it said in a statement today.

Other potential investors have expressed an interest in reviving the brand, it added.

MYAirline said it is in “regular contact with all aviation regulators and we are committed to fulfilling any conditions and requirements mandated by the aviation regulators to regain its licenses and resume operations.” — BERNAMA / pic TMR FILE

I think lawsuit against the previous interested party should be last thing to do in their to-do list. LOL

They can go on getting legal action against quitter but how long can any legal firm can hold the pro bono card for them since its just investors pulling out from a highly potential loss making venture.

Any new investor would be better off starting from scratch if there is no regulatory hurdle in getting their AOC/ASL/ASP. But heck if I'm a foreign investor, Malaysia would be my last choice to open an airline given the market dynamics. We are a small low yielding market as compared to our neighbours.
