Malaysia to see entry of new ultra low-cost carrier MYAirline

Recommended Posts

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 17): MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline), a newly-established ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), is expected to be launched soon, sources said, noting that it will challenge AirAsia Group Bhd’s dominance in the budget airline industry.

A check on the Malaysian Aviation Commission’s (Mavcom) website by theedgemarkets.com showed that the new ULCC, which was previously registered as Z9 Elite Sdn Bhd, has been granted conditional approval for an air service licence (ASL) by the commission on Dec 22, 2021. The licence is valid for 12 months from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2022. An ASL allows the licence holder to conduct scheduled passenger and cargo services like those of Malaysia Airlines Bhd and AirAsia.

MYAirline’s filing with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) revealed that it has two million shares at RM1 per share, amounting to RM2 million in paid-up capital.

“Credible information that a new ULCC is currently in the process of seeking regulatory approval to set up in Malaysia, having signed deals to lease two Airbus A320s at cheap leasing rates,” CGS-CIMB Research aviation analyst Raymond Yap wrote.

Should be more reliable than Rayani's 2 b734 that started to have loads of mechanical issues in just 1 month. Still it is very likely Myairlines would be more professional to not overburdened its old airbuses with hefty amount frequency duty.

Only thing that bothers me is the capital of MYR2mil would not be sufficient enough during the pandemic.

I think we should also create a list of defunct "airlines" in Malaysia. Rayani, Silverfly, Seaga ... from the news articles it seems like a big deal to have a new airline, yet history shows this is nothing new.

Yes, they need more working capital than that, let alone the startup costs! I wonder what MAVCOM was thinking when it awarded the AOC.

2 very old aircraft on lease - that sounds like Airasia starting up again - however, the airline industry landscape has changed since then and is changing again with Covid-19. This means any airline must be very agile. Domestic route opportunities are limited as Firefly jet is also taking off at the same time.

Will we see the good old days of RM0 fares again?

  1. Adorna Airways  - Operated an A310 VR-BQU from March to November 1997
  2. Aero Malaysiana - ATR 72 9M-AMA was painted in 2002 and stored at TLS, the airline never got off ground.
  3. Borneo Airways – Two incarnations. First one was acquired by Malaysian Airways to form Malaysia–Singapore Airlines, second one was a quasi-JV with Royal Brunei Airlines flew BWN- MYY/MZV/LBU with one Do-228 between 1997 - 1999.
  4. Eaglexpress – Hajj charter airline which default on payment and staff wages 2012- 2016.
  5. Fly Asian Xpress – proxy airline set up by AirAsia to win AirAsia X license. Horrible, terrible airline 2006
  6. Flying Fox Airways -proposed in 2013, rebraned YOU Wings……flown into dust without any single flight
  7. flymojo – promising airline to be based at JHB and BKI which placed an order for 20 CS100, a delay in then- Bombarider CS program means flymojo coud not fulfil DCA’s approved timeline for granting AOC. The name in Cantonese means fly then gone missing, not really auspicious to start with….
  8. Gading Sari Aviation Services – Old workhorse for Pos Malaysia….2006 2015, renamed/merged to AsiaCargo Express
  9. Ked-Air –based at Alor Star, it was set up after the demise of Pelangi Air, flew Alor Star to Medan between 2004 - 2006
  10. Mafira Air Charter Services – based at SZB, flew a single F-28 in between 1997 to 2000. Asian Financial Crisis killed it.
  11. Malayan Airways – well known
  12. Malaysian Airlines – well known
  13. Malaysian Airline System – well known
  14. Malaysian Airways – well known
  15. Malaysia–Singapore Airlines – well known
  16. Merpati Intan Airlines – Shell airline company which operated a Do-228 in 1997 on behalf of Royal Brunei Airlines. Their sole Do-228 9M-MIA slammed into Lambir National Park, Miri resulting in 10 death. The airline company wounded up aftermath.
  17. Neptune Air – old workhorse for Pos Malaysia as well. Rebranded as My Jet Xpress Airlines now.
  18. Pelangi Air – one of the consistently true commuter airline Malaysia ever had, with a fleet of 3 Do-228 and 2 F-50, it flew to many main and secondary cities within Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. It was supposed to add Dash 8 for market expansion in 1997, when the Asian Financial Crisis killed it.
  19. Rayani Air – flown with two rackety ex-MH B734 which have passed beyond expiry date, it was a horror since its beginning. Two safety incidents, frequent flight cancellation, pilot strike and lack of refund were enough to keep passengers away. Who can forget their hand written boarding pass on their inaugural flight??
  20. Saeaga Airlines – Set up by the late Tan Sri Ting Pek Hiing in 1995, it was based at Sabah using 1 CRJ 200 and two Dash 8s; plying cities in Sabah and Sarawak with a big dream of leasing 10 A320s to expand regionally to Australia, Indonesia, China, HK, Taiwan and Philippines. Suffered same fate as Pelangi Air and Ked Air, it was shut down in 1998.
  21. Silverfly – an Ipoh-based virtual airline which lend Firefly ATR 72 for flight, it was grounded faster than ATR 72 can take off.
  22. Southern Cross Malaysian Airways – a dodgy airline from early days which operated a B707, it was forced to shutdown when its 707 was seized in London due lack of payment.
  23. Transmile Air Services – Initially a charter passenger/cargo airlines, it was another old workhorse of Pos Malaysia, carrying newspaper around Malaysia in its early days with B732 and B727 which expanded into worldwide cargo service. It was then the only dedicated night intra-Asian express cargo operator in Malaysia, doing KUL-BKK-HKG sector, then SZB-KUL-KCH-BKI-HKG return. Formerly owned by Robert Kuok, Malaysia #1 richest person who reportedly paid cash USD 600million for four MD-11Fs in 2005, beating even FedEx and UPS. At one time, they owned several subsidiaries in Thailand and Indonesia. It crumbled due to massive accounting scandal by previous CEO Gan Boon Aun which is being hunted by police now.
  24. Vision Air Malaysia- regional charter airline in Sarawak which ceased operation in 2003, operated two Do-228 which is now with Hornbill Skways.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/myairline-hiring-spree-after-securing-conditional-rights-fly

Newly-established MYAirline Sdn Bhd is seeking to hire flight operations staff after having recently secured conditional rights to operate.

According to a posting on LinkedIn by MYAirline’s chief operating officer and executive director Stuart Cross, the airline is looking to hire pilots to operate Airbus A320 aircraft.

Remark: Stuart Cross was previously with Aero K, a South Korean LCC-start up, also previously with flyGlobal charter airlines and spent three years with AirAsia Group before that.

They are now looking for flight operation staff and A320 pilot and cabin crew.

Website is up https://www.myairline.my/career.html

And the logo is published.....(hideous IMO)

It has been an awfully extended gestation period, and still no hint of when the first revenue flight might be
There must be some seriously deep pockets behind this endeavour 😀

Myairlines team might've actually push the marketing and sales pitch to the public a bit tad too quick especially when looking at how CAAM scrutinizes things ever since the FAA downgrade and with CAAM actually having more manpower than before to check every hair stack. Even GA company in East Malaysia are noticing the increasing strictness.

Yea, I kind of notice it as well. Perhaps they want to avoid another episode of Rayani Air from happening.

Also noted, MYAir has recruited or rather poached a lot of AirAsia Group experienced staff, both in management and operation staff. The rapid downsizing of Malindo and AirAsia Group, to lesser extent Malaysia Airlines, during pandemic period, offered MYAir a good opportunity to bring in a solid and experienced team.

Now that they have publicized themselves so much, they have a very high mountain to climb. Firstly: no (unannounced) flight cancellation or delay, and secondly a very robust customer service system (i.e. speak to a human!). No thanks to what the current three airlines have done for past three years........
