Not sure what is TF's strategy though, the tourists are not coming back to SEA in droves though, at least not in next 6-8 months. Cambodia or the greater Indo-China market market are mainly one off tourists searching for really cheap fares, VFR market is non-existent as the locals how are abroad wouldn't want to return at this point of time.

I don't think any entrepreneur, founders and ceo would ever put a cent as a guarantor on a very huge company even if its a company that was build by them. One thing though, part of this loan was meant to be used for refunding passengers and keeping its crew guess that was not their priority. Repayment schedule as well is too quick for capital a standards.

AirAsia X completes debt restructure, to write back RM33b to profit

BENGALURU (March 16): Airasia X (AAX) said on Wednesday it had completed its debt restructuring, and will write RM33 billion back to profits in the next quarter.

Under the airline's restructuring proposal, it would pay just 0.5% of debt owed and end its existing contracts. It was approved by its creditors and the High Court of Malaya last year.

The restructuring was proposed to avoid liquidation after the long-haul low-cost airline posted a record quarterly loss last September. It is one of many carriers in the Asia-Pacific region to have entered a court-overseen debt restructuring process to survive the pandemic.

On a personal note, I will not touch this airline any more with ten foot pole. Such insidious management they have.....

Many said the same. But in Malaysia and almost everywhere else around the world once airlines even the so called national airlines with subpar full service starts tossing dodgy dirt cheap fares Malaysians and backpackers forget everything. Then when s#1t hits the fan everyone starts yapping how dodgy the business tactics company x and y is yet nobody bother to think why to buy such no frills ticket in the first place.

AirAsia X expands flight network to Korea, India

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) is expanding its flight network from Kuala Lumpur with new services to Incheon, Seoul, South Korea and New Delhi, India commencing from April 20, 2022.

This follows the resumption of the airline's passenger services to Sydney, Australia, in February.

AAX chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the airline is confident that its return to these markets will be well received, particularly for those longing to revisit friends and family or for much-anticipated leisure travel.

AirAsia X strikes off majority of A330neo order

Long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X appears to have slashed its orders for Airbus A330-900s by more than 60.

The airframer has listed 63 cancellations for the long-haul twinjet during March, and AirAsia X’s commitment has fallen from 78 to 15 aircraft.

Capital A Bhd expects to return to profitability in 2023 in line with the anticipated recovery in travel demand by year-end, said chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes today.

Speaking to reporters during a virtual media briefing today, he said AirAsia plans to have most of its fleet back in service by year-end.

"Our sales (is currently) at 75 per cent of the pre-COVID19 level and I never expected it to (recover) so quickly.

Rafidah has resigned as Chairman of AirAsia X and TF has been appointed as acting GCEO. who replaced Nadda who has passed on (RIP).

 Dr. Patima Jeerapaet took over as Thai AirAsia X CEO since April 2022.

Rumour is TF wants to fold AirAsia X into AirAsia mainline service. Same goes to Thai AirAsia X into Thai AirAsia. With that we may not know if their long haul service is making loss or money in near future. 

A330neo order is down to 15 and A321XLR order is now down to 20. Delivery from 2026 onwards for A330neo, A321XLR unknown for now.

History proved, D7 business model is unprofitable, make sense to hide under AK.

To improve yield, it make sense to mix a321xlr with a330.

Even prior to the pandemic D7 lacks the cash flow, weak financial support from Airasia Group, customers are not that yielding than scoots, limited fly thru with Ak or other sister company destinations, then theres SGD over MYR.

Scoot is not the original pure long haul airline that it was when launched. It merged with Tiger Airways and gained its short haul network - it also gained more short haul routes from the closure of Silkair. I think we can safely say that Scoot is doing better than D7.

Prior to merging Scoot was already strong on the long haul. It was not dependent on the short haul network from silk. People were visiting or transiting in and out. 

D7 started earlier but did not even gain foot into europe due to aircraft limitation for a decade while scoot can do so with the 787s. D7 Australia presence was not doing well compared to scoot. Scoot had the benefit of Singapore being a very yielding location plus stronger buying power from local singaporeans. Malaysian folks would argue if a flight to sydney costs 1.7k ringgit but for singaporeans 1k sgd is of no issue. Then there's also a fact scoot had more EU travelers transiting. D7 barely had any foreigners travelling with them and was at the mercy of Malaysians.

Quite difficult for d7 to be profitable unless Malaysia starts attracting more foreign tourists with higher buying power or the a330 operates like a a321 lol that would be affordable to locals. But again our gov has been more focussing on clean family oriented leisure so don't expect any young trendy big spenders to come. The tactic of using an a321neo to replace a333 is not really a long term solution when scoot and jetstar etc are on 787s.

So, it was subsidised by the government that did not have a clear policy for its aviation industry. Malaysia could've been as attractive as bali, phuket, chiang mai, saigon if the gov put effort during 2005s.

 

KK itself was even noted by Christoph Mueler for being potentially good as Bali but lacked facility upkeep 0, strategic marketing by tourism ministry.

 

I attended an online talk regarding Japans perception on ASEAN. Malaysia was highlighted by them as having nearly 0 presence among those age 20-40s due to almost NIL marketing. They highlighted our government's poor annual expenditure % for tourism marketing vs indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam  and this translate to our airlines picking up scraps on whatever it can. Philippines was highlighted for having the biggest improvement especially in regards to Cebu only bogged down by poor toilet cleanliness. 

 

If Malaysia's idle state in tourism continues it will lose out to Philippines and Vietnam pretty soon. Wont bode well for any of our airlines.
