Probably more take off and landing cycles than other regular planes of same age and production. Regular airlines will use their planes for maybe 15-20years and still have regular value . But for lcc due to shorten turnaround and high utilization rate, probably 10 years or less is sufficient for disposal or sales. Plane can still last a lot longer though may not be efficient.

9M-AFB AIRASIA AIRBUS A320-214 - MSN 2633 Delivered 23 Dec 2005 14.3 years old

These are the second and third brand new A320s to arrive at AK to replace the ancient B733 classics.

The first A320, 9M-AFA is now flying for Airasia India as VT-HYD.

This year, Airasia Group is expecting delivery of 28 aircraft but net additions will only be 11. So, they will need to dispose of 17 old aircraft - with the B737 Max still grounded, A320s should fetch good resale prices.

Quite possible - both VAA and VAB only flew KUL-MNL sectors the past few days and are probably not needed for AK now. Only one of them is flying each day. Today, VAA is flying KUL-KCH and VAB is sleeping. The other alternative is for D7 to take a few of the scheduled AK deliveries.

Have not seen them being deployed to bki for nearly a month now.

Yes, last night my flight AK5119 usually was an A321neo, but now switched to A320neo. Even with the switch, it wasn't full. According to the crew it has been like this for past few weeks. Once in a blue moon you get A321neo, but very rare. The day prior, Z2 501 MNL-BKI only had four passengers!

VAB made it to BKI this evening. Does it mean that when AK deploys the A321NX, it may be a consolidation of two or more flights??

Drop bomb...

"The acting CEO Tharumalingam Kanagalingam (also known as Bo Lingam) has informed all their staff yesterday in an internal memo sighted by FocusM that due to “weaker” economic conditions caused by Covid-19, among others, “everyone needs to be financially prudent and proactive.”

Bo Lingam made the announcement after reviewing “every option to minimise the impact of any measures” on staff. The action on this is that the group will:

reduce wage costs. Our highest earners have decided to lead by example and agreed to take a pay cut.

suspend ‘Free Munch’ for all non-operations managers and above.

restrict duty travel unless absolutely necessary. I would encourage all of you to use voice or video conferencing.

cancel all big social events for the year.

suspend external training unless it is required by law or regulation.”

He added that these measures were “not permanent” and will be subject to periodic review “until the situation normalises.”

These guys now have to really work for their money. Not an easy juggling act to perform! I guess they will need to perform the same negotiations with BoC, Aercap, GECAS, BBAM, etc.

AAGB may have to reverse its non-ownership policy because they may not find enough lessors to finance their order book.

Basically, Asia is closed to flights - Australia and NZ effectively announced travel bans over the weekend. Where else can an airline fly to these days?

Further afield, Europe is also shutting down and the US is not far behind. It is probably better for airlines to cease passenger flights altogether for two or three weeks. They may wish to run some cargo flights using the belly cargo capacity of their passenger aircraft. There is still demand for cargo as China seems to be restarting economic activity.

You’re confusing outright bans with quarantine orders. AU/NZ aren’t banning incoming passengers — they just need to self-isolate.

I know some people who prefer going now and self-isolate, rather than wait and risk an outright ban.

That was why I used the word "effectively" - people will now only travel to those regions only if it is absolutely necessary. With such a reduction in volume of passengers, airlines may have no choice but to suspend flights.

AirAsia X banks on turnaround plan, some analysts say merger with MAS is the best option

THE global aviation industry has been one of the industries hardest hit by the evolving coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and there is no let-up in sight. Governments and airlines across the world are responding to the situation, but at this stage it is unclear how long airlines can hold out.

And investors, nervous about how the spread of Covid-19 will affect travel, are increasingly shying away from aviation stocks. As at last Wednesday’s (March 4) close, Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIA) shares were down 10% year to date and Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd shares had dropped 12%. Air Canada, the world’s hottest airline stock three months ago, has shed about 28% of its value.

Local airline stocks have not escaped the selldown, made worse by the weakness in the broader stock market following the recent political upheaval. As at the close on March 4, AirAsia Group Bhd (AAB) had lost 37%, or RM2.1 billion, of its share value year to date and its low-cost, long-haul affiliate AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) had given up about 44%, or RM291 million. The stock of airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd also lost 18%, or RM2.3 billion, of its market value in that period.

Analysts have raised concerns over AAX’s balance sheet, with a cash balance of only RM358 million as at Dec 31, 2019, and borrowings of RM6.32 billion.

And with only RM224 million in shareholders’ equity and a market capitalisation of RM373.33 million at last Wednesday’s close, there is an urgent need for fresh capital injection, they say, adding that AAB may need to step in to provide support to AAX.

AAX reports 32.9% deviation between FY19 audited and unaudited net loss

KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) recorded a wider audited net loss of RM650.32 million for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2019, compared with the previously announced unaudited net loss of RM489.48 million for the year, resulting in a 32.9% or RM160.84 million deviation.

This was due, among others, to an adjustment to deferred tax assets, which has adversely impacted the deferred taxation line in the income statement by RM178.9 million, AAX said in a stock exchange filing.

The deferred tax assets on the balance sheet, AAX said, was dependent upon the ability of the company to generate future taxable profits based on past performance and a reasonable growth rate.
