Updating AirAsia X fleet news, following some lessors took back their aircraft, the following aircraft have left AirAsia Group:

1. 9M-XBD MSN713 -> Returned to lessor JLPS in July 2020, now converted to freighter at Dresden, Germany

2. HS-XTB MSN786 -> Returned to lessor AerCap in April 2021, re-registered as EC-NOG, currently in pre-delivery check in Singapore

3. HS-XTD MSN741 -> Returned to lessor AerCap in March 2021, re-registered as EC-NOF, currently location unknown

4. 9M-XXK MSN1433 -> Sold in April 2021, new owner unknown and currently stored at Nimes-Garons Airport, France

5. 9M-XXP MSN1481 -> Returned to lessor Aircastle in February 2021 and currently stored at Toowoomba Airport, Australia

6. 9M-XXY MSN1600 -> Returned to lessor Seraph Aviation in February 2021 and currently stored at Nimes-Garons Airport, France

  • From its peak of 40 airframes, current A330-300ceo fleet stands at 32 with 1 pending for delivery HS-XTM for Thai AirAsia X.
  • Rumour is swirling AirAsia X will return more A330-300ceo to lessors as Vietjet has picked some ex-AirAsia X airframe to launch their mid-long haul destinations.
  • AirAsia X has rejected lease for 7 A330-900neo which have been completed and stored at Toulouse, France.

Information Source: airliners.net, planespotters.net

It looks like AirAsia X is on target to reduce their fleet - but I think they need to get rid of more planes because their flights have not resumed due to to Covid-19 not going away anytime soon. Under normal circumstances, they would have gone into liquidation. However, their owners seem to want to hold on....

https://www.scramble.nl/civil-news/airasia-s-teleport-to-launch-dedicated-freighter-service

AirAsia's cargo subsidiary Teleport has announced it will launch dedicated freighter operations later this year. The company is set to take delivery of a B737-800F later this year and will also use two "phreighter" A320s from mother AirAsia.

The B737-800F and one A320 will be based at Bangkok, while the other A320 will be based at Kuala Lumpur. They will be used to fly to China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Update:

9M-XXS MSN 1533 and 9M-XXT MSN 1549 have left KUL on 8th May and 13th June 2021 respectively to MNL, for heavy maintenance at Lufthansa Teknik. Hopefully just regular visit.

XXT is in Xcintillating PhoeniX Livery, will be a waste if they remove the livery.

Have read elsewhere that an OD 739ER is off to Delta along with 28 other similar frames from the Lion Air fleet, apparently the frames leaving the JT/OD/ID fleets and are apparently leased from Castlelake.

Does anyone know which frames are involved in the transaction?

9M-LNL is the first to leave. Seen here at HNL yesterday after arrival. OD operation is totally crippled by the pandemic and not doing any commercial flight now. God speed to all Malindo staff. Things going around is they will send off all remaining 5 B739 to Delta and maintain current 13 ATR 72, 5 B738 moving forward if they do restored their operation.

Thai Lion Air's fate remains a question, was planning an expansion in Dec 2020, but Thailand is currently hit with pandemic wave. Current fleet 6 B738 and 3 B737MAX-9. All 5 B739ER will head to Delta.

Indonesia side, Lion Air: possibly downscale current 43 B738 operation to move to MAX. Remaining 78 B739ER, some will leave for Delta, remaining 50 will be returned.

They still have 189 B737MAX8 and MAX9 and 50 B737MAX10 on order. Some of these orders will never see light of the day.

A330 operation: 3 A330-300ceo, 6 A330neo with another 4 pending delivery.

Batik Air A320 operation remains. 44 A320ceo and 1 A320neo. Further delivery on standstill as Rusdi has not been paying batch payment. 112 A320neo and 65 A321neo order in doubt. Unknown for 25 B738 and 6 B739ER. The latter most probaly go to Delta too.

A330 operation: 3 A330-300ceo

Wings Air was supposedly to add few more ATR 72 in 2019/2020 but missed payment. Current fleet 66.

Lion Air Group signed for 100 ATR 72: 81 delivered, 2 crashed, 79 in fleet, 3 NTUs, 14 pending.

Super Air Jet: 4 A320ceo. Their focus will be here.

Although sad, it would be good for Malaysian aviation post-pandemic. It will help to reduce the over capacity that we had the past few years.

Hello guys. Any news on XXJ? She departed KUL last night as D7900 and is still flying as per FR24 source. Presumably to somewhere in Spain.

Ahh okay. Thanks. 👍

Welcome. Ater checking, actually it was sold to new owner, and they flew him out to FNI to join her sister MSN 1433 9M-XXK which was sold back in April 2021. MSN 1600 9M-XXY is also at Nimes Airport for storage.

Depending on configuration, typically, each B737 MAX has between162 and 170 seats, with a capacity of 162 seats, requires about 100 employees to operate the aircraft from the pilot, cabin crew, ground handler, engineer and technician.

The mind boggles as to then why Malindo in Malaysia need 'up to' 1,500 staff for the 10 birds incoming ?! 😁

Last heard even their office management got trimmed they will have to rehire some of them back along with third party vendors etc etc. 100staff per narrowbody aircraft is still a very tight margin unless you're benchmarking against ultra low cost carriers where it can be 40-50 staff per plane lol. Doubt malindo domestic is sustainable though unless it focus flying its foreign routes to Malaysia instead.

These appear to be white tails - so they should receive them pretty quickly.

Malindo Air was in the process of rebranding to Batik Air Malaysia but has not received approval from CAAM when Covid-19 hit. Does this mean that going forward, it will be Batik Air Malaysia operated by Malindo Air?

Lion Group seems to have taken back or sold most of the Lion Air liveried aircraft in Malindo's fleet. I see 9M-LCR (Batik Air Malaysia livery) is flying these days.
