4x weekly service from Kuala Lumpur to the “Oasis of Japan” via Taipei

SEPANG, 30 October 2019 - AirAsia today announced a new route from Kuala Lumpur to Okinawa Naha, strengthening its position as the Malaysian carrier with the most connections and capacity in Japan.

The four times weekly service via Taipei commences 22 January 2020 (subject to regulatory approvals), and will be AirAsia’s sixth international destination in Japan, after Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Nagoya (via Bangkok).

AirAsia X from November 2019 is launching Kuala Lumpur – Singapore service, in addition to current service operated by AirAsia. AirAsia X’s A330-300 aircraft will operate this route twice daily, thus increasing overall AirAsia flights from 8-9 daily to 10 daily.

AirAsia X yesterday (30OCT19) confirmed its planned service launch to Okinawa, reported on Airlineroute on Thursday 24OCT19. The airline plans to operate Kuala Lumpur – Taipei Taoyuan – Okinawa route 4 times weekly, with Airbus A330-300.

First flight is scheduled on 22JAN20. Note the airline slightly modified operational schedule as it prepares to open reservation later today. Following schedule is effective 05FEB20.

Airlineroute made a route rundown for KUL-TPE-OKA. Seems like D7 is pretty much targeting TPE-OKA traffic only (as I suspected). O&D traffic demand for 2018 was slightly less than 4,000 pax (which if I understand correctly, that's 10-11 PDEW for 2018).

Yes, I think they only start fifth freedom flights for a couple of reasons. Firstly, if there is sufficient demand for that sector and secondly, to increase aircraft utilisation. It is interesting to note that D7 did not wait for Airasia Japan to launch their flights to OKA first.

That's a lot of extra capacity on the route and surprised that they finally went ahead with D7. 

Wonder how long it will last?

Starting on 10 November 2019, Air Asia has recently announced that they are increasing their services and seat capacity from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore with an additional daily flight on their wide-body Airbus A330 aircrafts.

AirAsia’s SIN-KUL sector has recorded a steady 14% year-on-year increase having flown over 1 million passengers to date, with 24% being Singapore passport holders. With the rise of increased demand for seats on this particular sector, AirAsia has now added almost 400 extra seats per day with their wide-body A330 aircraft operations
