AirAsia Group/AirAsia X Group Service Changes

Recommended Posts

the demand for BKI-TWU is too high... currently AK 5flights daily, MH 2 flights daily on 738, and few flights by Maswings (direct/via SDK) also doing well.

There's need for additional bays in TWU for certain peak period. Few times maswings or airasia plane have to park at the taxiway due to crowding especially if theres more than 5 aircrafts at one time unless they spread over the arrivals.

AirAsia gonna launch KCH-TWU this October

What's the rationale on this? Pax heading to Tawau is almost entirely due to Chinese tourists heading straight to Semporna, not sure how TWU-KCH will works. They might be better fly TWU-CAN direct.

Maybe they have extra aircraft with no place to deploy?

Good if it works, if not just stop it.

Direct flights to Sabah's east coast airports (SDK and TWU) was one of Mdm Liew's first proposals after assuming the tourism portfolio, no ?

Wonder why OD dont do KUL-TWU. Airasia have 5/6 flights and MH 2 flight daily plying this route. Immigration at TWU is horrendous these days.

Probably low yields... OD is more focussed on international routes these days.

Inevitably this brings up the issue of whether the airports can handle more flights. Sandakan airport terminal is relatively new and they have extended the runway before that. Tawau airport is old, but not that old either. Both airports lack terminal space and boarding gates. Tawau also need to rework the check-in/immigration counters if they want to handle more pax. AK might just start complaining if KLIA2 could be used as a reference in this case.

Moving forward, perhaps a small airport ala Kudat should be built in Semporna to take some of the load from Tawau airport?

Good idea, but minimum should be ATR capable (there may not be enough of the Vikings around to meet demand otherwise :))

However, probably end up A380 standard of 'international' standing instead, considering whose backyard that is nowadays .....

Direct flight yes..... but from Kuching? whats the strategy here? like I say, the growth in TWU in the past 4-5 years is entirely fueled by the arrival of chinese tourists heading to Semporna. So shouldn't the direct flight be targeting at this market instead?

1) Sandakan airport currently handled about 950K pax annually with a capacity of 1.5 - 2 million pax a year, so there is room to grow further. However, the current runway length of 7000ft means it can't really handle flights beyond 3 hrs flying time.

2) TWU has exploded this past few years with the influx of chinese tourists heading to Semporna. TWU is estimated to handle close to 1.5 mil by end of this year and the airport terminal and parking apron is in need of an upgrade. Its 8800ft runway is long enough to handle the demand.

3) With Sabah Tourism Board estimate that close to 400K tourists (mainly chinese) visited Semporna last year, if all passed thru TWU (both departing n arriving), means close to 800K pax handled by TWU were actually going to Semporna. So maybe better off building a smaller ATR ready airport for Tawau instead of Semporna and renamed TWU to SMM haha........

beside, it will also bring up the new market or travel pattern like China-BKI-TWU/Semporna-KCH-BKI-China or vice versa

which nowadays many choose to BKI-TWU-KUL or another way round.

You mentioned CAN-TWU and that was what my reply was referencing to

No idea on thinking behind KCH-TWU, don't think many people saw that coming :)

Interesting

Do you have any idea how much is BKI being used as a transit stop for China/S.Korea-Sarawak traffic ?

I suspect there must be some, BKI-KCH vv used to be like a dismal double daily years ago, nowadays a quite respectable 6x daily (and OD coming into picture soon too I believe) in parallel with the increase in China/S.Korea flights

I noticed that despite the hype, BKI - KCH fare is relatively cheap. Can get 89 one way 2 days before departure.

A local newspaper reported last time that it is sometimes even cheaper for you to fly from SBW to BKI via KCH on Air Asia than directly from SBW to BKI on MASWings

as of a 1hr20mins flight it's quite cheap. if compare to the 45mins flight to TWU... easily get up to RM150/sector.

i dunno the exact volume, but KCH is getting more popular for China tourist as i known. only that, they lack of direct flight, or maybe foreign carrier decided not to fly direct to KCH due to abused power by some authority. :pardon:

anyway, seems like China Southern interested to fly JHB, as they got a team of crew just went there.
