AirAsia Group/AirAsia X Group Service Changes

AirAsia X may relaunch London in 2017, potentially with ex-SriLankan A350s

Malaysia’s AirAsia X is considering the lease of A350s or 777-300ERs in 2017 to accelerate its return to Europe. A new widebody type will add cost and complexity but is necessary if the medium/long haul low cost airline is to meet its objective of relaunching London as soon as possible.
AirAsia X had been planning to wait until it receives A330-900neos before relaunching London and commencing other European routes. However the airline prefers not to wait until 2H2018, when its A330-900neo deliveries are slated to begin, and using another aircraft type in the interim mitigates the impact of a potential delay with the A330neo variant required for Kuala Lumpur-London.
AirAsia X could also use a new aircraft type – most likely A350-900s – to support new routes to the US. It plans to launch services from Japan to Hawaii in Jun-2017 using A330ceos, but also has longer-term plans for longer routes from Japan to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco – and potentially ultra-long haul routes from Malaysia to the US.
  • AirAsia X does not currently operate any very long haul routes
  • AirAsia X has been intending to use A330neos for resuming Europe
  • Focus shifts to other aircraft capable of operating to Europe sooner
  • AirAsia X could end up with AerCap A350s initially leased to SriLankan
  • A350 would be an easier solution operationally than the 777-300ER
  • A350 could ultimately become a long-term solution for AirAsia X
  • The A350 could also be used for North American routes
  • AirAsia X has opportunities but also risks
  • AirAsia X strategically needs to make a move in Europe - to lead the pack
  • Kuala Lumpur-London is a challenging route
  • AirAsia X will need partners to make Europe routes work
  • 2017 may prove to be a critical year for AirAsia X

Not a buy but a lease - so it has little to do with Airbus. But don't discount the fact that Airbus may be able to squeeze one or two delivery slots out for them if some other airline postpones or cancel their A350 order.

Thanks for the except from CA Flee.

Interesting indeed. So the 777 news may not be too far fetched afterall.

Also June 2017 - Hawaii, but with the president-elect , will we have problems going to Hawaii? Or this flight will be mainly a Japan-centric marketing idea.

I think they will only go for the B77W if the lease rates are super low and they are able to get a short term lease agreement to tie them over till 2H 2018.

6-6 on B77W :D

Good god.

The AK/D7 ladies would need super long hands (or selfie sticks!) to reach to the window passengers :D :D

Does it need to be a B77W tho? Especially when they can load it up with the light Mirus seats?

The Mirus seats that are fitted in AK A320s are "short haul" seats. They have a better product for long haul but it might not be as light.

The Malay speaking ladies may not take too kindly to that description though :D

AirAsia X flying to London, Frankfurt this summer

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia X will return to London this summer with direct flights out of klia2, AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes told media on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last week.

Additionally, Fernandes said that Frankfurt will be added to the list of destinations for the long-haul arm of the Malaysian-based low-cost carrier, but it will be a direct flight out of Bangkok.

According to German news agency DPA, Fernandes said he hoped to set the airfare below €200 (RM953) for the Bangkok-Frankfurt flight.

“I would like to offer them for even less. Due to the low oil prices, we could even afford to set the airfare as low as €150 (RM715).

Man, I can't wait for them to REALLY start London and whatever EU routes they have in plan. They have mentioned it over and over again like a broken record. Lord, please get those AirAsia X B777-300ER flying soon!!!

I read this report too and decided not to bother re-posting. Afterall, this is TF and this is Davos. It is just a talk shop and nothing gets done!

Yes, I agree - lets wait for the real launch with real bookings being opened to the public!

18 hrs with that cramped seating? no thanks!

Nah - their planes dont have the stamina to go 11 hours, much less 18.

What i envision is that they will be leveraging on Japan - the Japanese loooooves Hawaii.

We may see either of the following routes as part of their entry into US:

KUL - HND - HNL

KUL - KIX - HNL

KUL - KIX - GUM

KUL - NRT - HNL

Basically Japan will be the secondary spoke for US operations.

Well, unless they pick up a few 777 for their long distance flights.
