Only four out of RMAF's 28 Russian fighter jets can fly

Recommended Posts

I guess that is why the Flankers didn't follow the Hornets to Australia for Pitch Black 2018.

Our pilots are not getting their flying hours in.

Heard the amphibious Maritime birds have not flown in 2 months either.

Russian equipment is known to have short life cycle and heavy on maintenance. With RM connected in supply chain, spare parts price could be exorbitant. Guess the 4 jets are number needed for fly past display.

Russian fighters while performance are top notch over the Americans are usually heavy on maintenance cost and operating cost infact rmaf prefers to operate the f-18s over them and considered even taking kuwaits older f-18c to replace some of russian jets.

Limited budget allocated to rmaf by prev gov brought on with the pricey maintenance, rmaf rather upgrade one of the a400ms and operate the entire a400m fleet while they've deferred maintenance schedule on the su30s. This results in many grounded or not combat ready sukhoi jets. The aging mig-29 are supposed to be taken out from rmaf fleet by 2015 but gov can't even commit to the mrca program but even then the mig-29 are not that air worthy no more.

We're tracking on with the Philippines now with our very weak air Force even Indonesia and Thailand is way ahead of us in air Force assets. The new government has to do something.

They really need to study possible JVs with the Russians or Indians for the maintenance of the Russian jets. Also look at how the former Warsaw Pact countries maintain their Mig 29s. There are still a lot of top notch Migs flying for those air forces.

So, we are surrounded (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore)!!!

What about the hawks and other assets?

On a lighter note, if Indonesia ever get the F22, they would be rightfully called the Indoraptor.

Believe only 8-9 Hawks are active the remaining have parts in need of replacement. The only jets that are well maintained are the f-18d hornets and you always see them being actively promoted over the sukhois lol. Edited by jahur

Typical Malaysian government false economy - buy more of the cheaper ones rather than the expensive ones (F/A18) which last longer. Theres a reason why they are more expensive. In the long run, you save more

The F/A-18 may not be that much more expensive - it is widely used by many air forces and navies in the world and has had a long production run. As such, spare parts are widely available and maintenance is easier.

Well given the political climate vis a vis the opposition at the time, is it any wonder?

i believe it's not typical malaysian styles. took the China van as examples, why do they restrict the number for Hiace and Urvan production/imports, and encourage more China Van coming in instead.

I also doubt it. It didn't stop them from getting a second jet for personal use, so.

Yes, the govt. does pretty much what it wants - otherwise, the 1MDB scandal would not have gotten so huge!

The Su-30MKMs were ordered during a time when the BN govt. had an overwhelming majority after the 2004 GE.

So the F5E is no longer salvageable? I think the Taiwanese still flying theirs.

Flee, it was 1993 that they bought the MiG29 and the F/A 18 hornet. I am 100% sure that they bought more MiG29 because they were much cheaper and the Russians were happy to sell them missiles etc etc. The USA would only allow them certain weapons systems (whereas Singapore could get the more advanced ones as they were much closer allies)..

Now as you said, the MiG29 maintenance costs are much more - so overall false economy. They were bought during Dr Ms time

Don't give them ideas - may end up resurrecting the Skyhawks instead :D

Didn't some of the engines went missing, only to be found under maintenance awhile back.

You see, that would be the worrying part - why were they undertaking maintenance on bits of an aircraft that is supposedly retired from service ? My simple brain can only come up with options of wastage or resurrection :D

So many Upgrades planned but most never happened due to lack of funding. Believe only 3-4 C-130s are certified to fly into Eu and US airspace the rest are not well equipped for todays standard based on conversation with one of the c-130 FO's during the 2015 LIMA their fleet superiors have been tasking RMAF to upgrade the C-130 with tcas and proper glass cockpit as the entire C-130 fleet are in desperate need in ugprades but the pricey to operate A400m were preferred over them. One A400m has been even upgraded for mid air refueling which has probably cause the deferment in maintenance of keeping the sukhoi's maintenance and parts in check. The Beechcraft King air used for MPA have equipment so heavy installed it affects CG balance and are very dodgy to fly sometimes.

On another non related issue the previous government has placed orders for little bird attack helicopters to protect Sabah's East Coast that are supposed to have been delivered last year. Not sure what happened to the delay but the procurement involved so many greedy third hand parties from Malaysia and USA.

Technology wise, the American made fighter jets are more advanced than the Russian built. F22 Raptor, F35 Lightning. If the government were to replace the MiGs, the best replacement would be the Super Hornets.
