Airbus A220 embarks on demonstration tour across Asia

An Airbus A220-300 flight test aircraft will visit six Asian destinations as part of a demonstration tour across the region. After a stopover at Seoul’s Incheon Airport, the aircraft heads to Yangon (Myanmar), the first location of the demonstration tour. The aircraft will then visit Hanoi (Vietnam), Bangkok (Thailand) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) before heading north to Nagoya (Japan).
The A220 is the most modern aircraft in the 100-150 seat market. It delivers unbeatable efficiency and passenger comfort in its size category, with 20% lower fuel consumption than previous generation aircraft. The A220 being used for the demonstration tour in Asia is an Airbus flight test aircraft fitted with a typical single-class passenger cabin.
During the A220 demonstration tour, customers and media will be offered a close up view of the aircraft’s outstanding characteristics, comfort and performance that benefit both operators and passengers alike.
The A220 delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and true wide-body comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least 20% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. With a range of up to 3,400 nm (6,300 km), the A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft.

It is at DMK now, it should arrive in KUL late evening.

Although AK might be interested in this aircraft, it has PW GTF engines. AK prefers GE technology, i.e. CFM LEAP.

MH loves PW and might be a better candidate for A220 orders - it has about the same capacity as the B734.

It is right that they are targeting MH because it is a good B738 replacement. MH can then upgauge all their Max orders to the B737-10.

The interior look spacious. Swooping luggage bin will make getting in and out of the seat easy. Should MH order this aircraft, more long and thin routes can be served and MH can explore point to point routes from other airports. After a long time not flying thru JHB, I was shocked to see the dominance of AirAsia Group in this airport.

Very nice catches, Sofian! We have comprehensive coverage of this tour.

The A220 is on the way to NGO now.

Miss Morgan binti Stanley.

Lolx, but but Miss Morgan has nothing order. Most probably Mr. Macquarie or Misss. Republic will do the honour. Both have 40 A220-300 on order.

I wonder if they let him test drive the plane, or just look and see?

I think it has more to do with the insurance - will the insurance company allow it?

If mh want to be profitable and survive will need this aircraft type for routes that is unprofitable for 738.

MH needs more than everything other than just hardware change. They are leasing and financing most of their fleet now, not sure if adding another fleet type will make sense. As much as we would like to see A220 in AirAsia or MH colours, it has limited roles in either airlines' operation.

Yes, the MH fleet is reasonably modern right now and they have already ordered Boeing 737-8 and -10 Maxes. However the number ordered is just for replacing aircraft whose leases that will expire in the near term and that is why they still have options to exercise in future. This is where the A220 can play a part. Airbus will not be able to give many near term delivery slots as yet due to slow production ramp up. As such, I would expect any order to be delivered after 2021. Also by then, PW should have solved all engine issues and may have even delivered a PIP for them.

As for Airasia, it may still be useful for them. As they are taking A321s from now on, some routes will not be able to fill them. They may decide to hang on to A320Neos but what about the A320Ceos? As we know, AK has been "asset stripping" in recent years and they now own very few of their aircraft. When the A320Ceos go off lease, it may be time to get more efficient A220s.
