AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes Eyeing The Bombardier CSeries

Recommended Posts

Speaking to a gaggle of reporters after a press conference in Montreal, Canada, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said AirAsia was considering purchasing the Bombardier CSeries.

Earlier in the day, Bombardier took Fernandes on a CSeries demonstration flight to showcase the next generation aircraft. The news, first reported by Reuters, would give the CSeries program a much-needed boost.

It is important to note that Fernandes took a ride on the CS300 and not the smaller CS100. The CS300 seats 130 in a two class configuration but AirAsia would likely squeeze up to 160 passengers into it in a one class configuration.

Cs100 and cs300 is idea for mh regional routes. With smaller aircraft, it could provide regular frequency to feed the network with attainable break even point.

The cs series is only usefull on smaller airports with shorter runway, rask and cask the a320 has the upper hand as most of ak flyers are bargain hunters.

On another mote Ak did took interest in the bimp eaga routes where runways are shorter than 6000feet around last year. But after studying the flying pattern and demand on borneo they just pullout. Regional jets like embraer and tuboprop Q400 are too expensive to operate while the ATR carries too little and is a dead horse when it comes to parts. Everyone knows the RAS and regional borneo Philippines flights are always seasonal and were never profitable for lcc.

Think if ak gets the cs series my bets will be they'll be flying on the indonesian and thailand subsidiaries instead as market over there are more vibrant for such op.

Reminds me of FlyMojo...whatever happen to it and its CSeries orders?

as far as I know, the fancy website with a boarding pass is not accessible anymore.

TF went to Canada mainly to announce the sale of their Asian Aviation Centre of Excellence shares to CAE - so he may just be making a stopover at Bombardier.

I am sceptical because the C-series does not have LEAP engines and we have not heard about any strategy changes at Airasia Group. I think that if they do order them, implementation will only take place a few years down the road because Bombardier production ramp up of the C-series is even slower than the Neo and Max....

Is Bombardier in trouble? Cause the report made it looked like Bombardier needed the visit more than Tony himself.

They had a bail out from the Canadian government - that was why Embraer complained to the WTO. See https://www.thestar.com/business/2017/02/08/brazil-files-wto-complaint-against-canada-after-aid-for-bombardier.html

Yeah, the Cseries did not receive any new orders for some time - so any order will be good for them, and if Airasia orders 50 or 100, it will definitely be a lifeline. Yes, Bombardier needed the visit as their Paris Air Show performance was a huge disappointment!

TF knows how to squeeze out the best prices - so he might be looking for a bargain. He will walk away if the price is not to his liking....

Or maybe TF is looking to squeeze out the best price for A319neo (if he really is looking for 160 seaters)

Bombardier just need to set up a training centre with sims in the Asia Pacific region and the airlines here will buy.
