MAB to Lease 6 Ex-Air Berlin Airbus A330-200 Aircraft from February 2018

Recommended Posts

Yes, it is a tough issue for the management to grapple with.

But low pay is not just an MAB problem - it is happening everywhere in Malaysia. MAB's added complexity is that it has to compete with Airasia and other Malaysian and overseas employers.

It's morally degrading for many of them. There's many of them willing to stay to help mab but the fact the company overworks them with a lot of cutting corners some gave up and left. The a350 crew is stable but I really worry for the 738s and a333 the active recruitment drive currently undergoing is unable to fill the void of those leaving in masses when your own trainees also leaving halfway.

Pilots can only work 900 hours per 12 months so that equates of 75 hours per month. Anything above 75 this month means you gotta work less in some other month. When pilots fly consistently above 80 hours every month his limit of 900 hours of 12 consecutive months used up very quickly.

Fatigue/tiredness is subjective and differs from people to people. Some can take 100 hrs/month and still feel super, some complains past 50 hrs but basic rights/hard limitations has to be observed by pilots/operator.

People leaving because of better offer but most of them went just next door.

Thanks for sharing all this info, nastar!

MH is due for a substantial boost in capacity in 2018. I really hope that yields will not suffer too much!

Why coming online in 6 months? Thought they are desperate?

In 1H 2018, the 6 A359s will arrive - these could also be deployed as substitutes for B738s, together with supersub, the A388.

Also, 1Q is usually a low season - so the need for additional capacity isn't so urgent.

Cool... thanks for your input, Francis!

So it turned out that the 6x A330-200s may become strays now that they have decided to keep the A388 and the incoming A350-900s?

Wonder if they will eventually order the B787-9s... or they may convert those order to 737Max 8 and Max 10...

I thought the A332s were primarily being used to grow capacity on the routes where the 738s are now too small.

That was the initial objective - so they will be operating on regional routes in Asia.

From what has already been shared by nastar, we can see that this is largely implemented. The A332s will be flying to DAC, CAN, DPS, DEL, PVG and HKG.

Meanwhile, A333s will still be used to upgauge existing B738 routes if demand is there and spare aircraft are available.

But isn't the A332 a bit too heavy and wasteful for regional routes? I thought the A332 was perfect for long haul with less demand routes such as AKL.

As they are ex-AB, they are not configured for long haul. I believe that MAB is not making many mods to the aircraft. They will serve on the same regional routes as the B738s - so long haul capabilities are not required.

Qantas uses their A332 for SYD AKL flights up from previous 737 services. The seat backs does not feature Screens but has a holder instead which can fit any camera, ipad and tablets. Then you just log on to Q streaming and access the wide library options of music, movies etc.But yesterday on the flight there was also an I pad in seat pockets for IFE access.

Would be perfect for KUL - PER maybe? Or BNE?

300 seater for an a330-200 is technically not configured for long haul when other carriers are fitting only 240-250 seats for that aircraft type on long haul missions. So definitely they'll be using them to upgauge high density 737 routes.

Unless major revamping is done on floor planning expect economy cabin offering and legroom pitch to be 738 like but with wider seats due to wider fuselage and 8 abreast.
