MAB to Lease 6 Ex-Air Berlin Airbus A330-200 Aircraft from February 2018

Recommended Posts

Do we know where these A330s coming from?

No, currently everyone is trying to guess where is/are the source(s). Every other day the press will keep recycling the same news without mentioning where is MH sourcing them.

A reliable source indicated that they will be ex-EY A332s with RR Trent engines.

Some will start to be delivered from the end of this year and more will come in 2019.

If EY A332 are indeed the planes MH will be picking up, I wonder if the seats will be kept because it is actually quite a good configuration with 1 - 2 - 1 for biz class

they were just recently refurbished.

Since it may be 332s I am wondering if it would be used on the longest 333 routes MH serves like Auckland/Tokyo

this is what I hope for

Tokyo is not the longest, it is only about 6-7 hours from KUL. MEL, BNE and SYD is longer than that at 7-8 hours depending on the weather and pattern.

Rumours that Peter B. is trying to negotiating Airberlin A332 with AerCap as 10 leased aircraft is reclaimed back. And it's Pratt Whitney powered engine!

They can try to get the newer frames - probably six to eight of them.

The rest are much older - however, if they want to refurbish the cabin, it may make sense to take the older ones as lease rates will be lower.

The airline said it has had “very attractive offers from bankrupt European airlines,” and is “meeting with lessors this week.” - Aviation Daily.

That makes sense as Airberlin is facing insolvency right now.

I suspect the chances of a deal with AerCap are good - afterall, D7 found their lease rates acceptable for the six ex-Dragonair aircraft that they are leasing for 10 years.

Malaysia Airlines Continues A330 Lease Negotiations

Malaysia Airlines Bhd. (MAB) still wants to lease additional Airbus A330s to cover short-term needs, despite the carrier’s new commitment to order Boeing 787-9s.
Following the announcement of the 787 deal this week, the carrier “confirms that we are actively exploring [used] high-specification A330s,” MAB told Aviation Daily. The airline said it has had “very attractive offers from bankrupt European airlines,” and is “meeting with lessors this week.”
In recent interviews, MAB CEO Peter Bellew said the airline was performing “due diligence” on some used A330s it had identified (Aviation Daily, Aug. 9). He said a deal was close, but stressed the airline was still negotiating to get the right price. The carrier was prepared to wait for better opportunities if these talks were not satisfactory, Bellew said.
MAB intends to use the leased A330s to replace narrowbody aircraft on certain high-demand routes to Asian destinations. It already operates several A330s.

If MAB indeed leasing the ex-airberlin fleet, will they rip out all the seats and install a new one? At a glance, airberlin business class is identical to EY business, which is not bad IMO.

It has a 1-2-1 config up front, which the members here seem to approve of :)

Its mostly mixed receptive. I have friends who enjoyed the privacy n enclosed throne seating, then there are some who are claustraphobic and really disliked the current industry enclosed lie flat design or those that face towards the windows. Also the throne seat gives u very limited foot room sleeping on the side is not possible for a tall person. Air berline seat seems to be in between, if mab is to save money maybe change the seat cover color?

Airbus A330-300 and freighter aircraft

Malaysia Airlines currently has 15 passenger and 3 specialised freight-only A330 aircraft. These widebody aircraft operate to North Asia, Australia, New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and China. They are used on the most profitable routes the airline operates and have lie flat beds in business class. The aircraft will start to end their leases between 2020 through to 2025.

The business strategy of Malaysia Airlines is to return to being a premium 5 star airline. The company has been on the lookout for suitable additional widebody aircraft for the last 12 months to enhance services to India, China, Hong Kong and North Asia.

The search is still ongoing to find approximately 6 second hand A330 aircraft which can complement the existing fleet and upgrade our Asian services quickly. Ideally, we want to be able to obtain high quality A330 used aircraft with lie flat beds and full in-flight entertainment systems to add to the fleet in 2018.

The A330 fleet is financed via a variety of finance and operating leases including some export credit debt. Payments vary from quarterly to monthly. If additional good value aircraft can be sourced, they will be financed by operating leases.

As the existing Airbus A330-300 passenger fleet approaches the end of their leases, a replacement will be required and the company will continue to evaluate the new Airbus A330neo and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to replace this fleet of 15. This is of course, subject to a final decision by the Board.

Some rumours have been emerging that said LH bought ten A332s from the lessors to preempt competitors from operating routes served by Air Berlin.

Not MH's fault - AKL is having problems with jet fuel supply due to a busted pipeline to the refinery:

D7 is not affected because they can tanker fuel after they stopped at OOL.
