Sources: AirAsia move to KLIA could see some airlines shift to klia2

Recommended Posts

KUALA LUMPUR: There is a possibility that several airlines based at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) would have to move to Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) should the AirAsia Group start operating out of the Main Terminal.

No worries, Rayani Air will occupy all the space vacated by Airasia at KLIA2. "Sources" say Rayani Air will also sign a firm order for 10 787-9 from Boeing "within this month" to take advantage of the lower PSC for flights to international ex-ASEAN destinations departing from KLIA2.

MALAYSIA AIRPORTS RESPONSE ON AIRASIA GROUP'S PLAN TO MOVE ITS OPERATIONS TO KLIA BY JANUARY 2017

02 November 2016

SEPANG - We take note of media reports stating that AirAsia is planning to move its operations to KLIA. Similarly, we have also noted Malaysia Airlines’ (MAB) interest to operate at klia2. KLIA and klia2 are part of the same airport network system, essentially one airport, hence we welcome airlines to utilise either terminal that will suit their business model and operational efficiency.

klia2 as the newer terminal has its advantages. Airlines operating at klia2 have benefited from its facilities such as access to a dedicated Runway 3 for taking off and landing which has reduced queuing time, ample gates for overnight parking resulting in operational efficiency and convenience, and shorter taxiing time that saves fuel.

We are open to discuss any airline’s requirements to switch terminals if it benefits them and the requirements can be accommodated based on availability of capacity at the terminal, such as the case when Malindo moved to KLIA to suit their business model to collaborate and code-share with the Middle Eastern airlines.

" [...] open to discuss any airline’s requirements to switch terminals if [...] the requirements can be accommodated based on availability of capacity at the terminal"

Since obviously no available capacity, please continue day-dreaming.

Btw, if "runway 3" is dedicated for klia2, can't the same be said for klia's runway 1?

Although it is not uncommon to see AK's 320s using 32R, I'm not aware if MH has gone all the way to rwy 15/33 for departures or landings.

My flight from SGN with MH last year landed via runway 33 instead of 32L due to heavy rain after pilots performed a go around. So i guess it depends on ATC clearance. Edited by Yang Zulhilmi

MAHB: AirAsia cannot move entire operations to KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 10): Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd cannot shift its entire operations to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from klia2, as the former is almost at full capacity.
MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said AirAsia had brought up the issue during a recent scheduled meeting.
He said the matter was only discussed briefly, adding AirAsia did not make clear as to what exactly the carrier wanted.
"We had a discussion with AirAsia a few days ago during a meeting on airport efficiency, and AirAsia had also brought up their request to consider moving to the other terminal (KLIA), just like other carriers such as Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Malindo Airways Sdn Bhd previously.
"We are currently studying this, to find out what exactly they want and then we will respond. It's just a matter of availability and capacity at the terminal," he told a press conference today.

To me, it should just be called LCCT since it replaced the old cow shed.

What if a non-LCC wants to operate from there or AK's childish publicity stunt that they wanted move their entire operations to "KLIA1"?

Keep it simple. Terminal 1 and 2 (A and B etc.). It's the same airport. If the nomenclature of airport terminals ain't broke, don't fix it.

Now you have people asking about KLIA1, KLIA2, main terminal, satellite terminal, LCCT etc. It can be very confusing to a first time user. Terminal 1 with the main concourse and satellite concourse, and terminal 2. Simple and easy.
