Malaysia Airlines Announces Partnership With Farah Khan To Redesign Its Uniforms

KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) has announced a strategic partnership with fashion brand Farah Khan to reenergise the design aesthetic of the national carrier's iconic kebaya and other uniforms.

Through the partnership, the fashion brand creative director, Datuk Seri Farah Khan will design the full range of uniforms of various departments of the airline, including its flight deck, cabin crew, airport and engineering outfits.

Malaysia Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Paul Simmon said Malaysia Airlines' uniforms, especially the kebaya, has served as an iconic symbol and a source of great pride for generations.

"With this collaboration, we look forward to taking this a step further, creating a fashionable and functional new collection," he said in a statement here today.

Simmon said the new uniforms would continue to be a point of pride for Malaysians as well as mark a fresh new start of MAB transformation for all customers who fly with the airline.

Meanwhile, Farah said MAB clothes were a composite of many facets that fascinated her and her team, while the designs were a sum of their inspirations.

"I am hugely excited about this partnership and the opportunity to make a positive impact in terms of the comprehensive look of cabin crew, ground staff and the rest of Team Malaysia Airlines," she said.

Farah said her aim was to present Malaysia's graciousness, warmth and hospitality.

Farah's designs are favoured internationally and available across more than 70 cities worldwide.

The new collection is expected to be unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2016, going into production soon after.

Talk about cabin crew's uniform change had started even before Khazanah stepped in but AJ couldn't carry it out as MAS just didn't have the fund and was bleeding badly. However, the pilots did get the new uniform, most probably due to lower cost as there were only about 1300 pilots as compared to almost 5000 cabin crew excluding the ground staff.

Not to mention with the current reduced staffing after CM laid down the axe last year as well.

Wow Raymond your reply was at the exact same time with almost the exact same content :D

Haha.. you're right, it is eerily similar at the same timing... freaky...

Just change the bloody logo and branding to make it consistent, not the uniform... duh~~~!

The uniform is fine and timeless, if it ain't broken, don't fix it!!!

I have a feeling the new uniform will incorporate a hijab.

That would be a huge surprise coming from Farah Khan - modern darling glam socialite-entrepreneur-fashionista for so many decades - unless it's corporate requirement stipulated by MH. Still remember those heady days in the 90s, she was everywhere in the Tatler (even now I presume)

If you don't break the unbroken, and don't pay to fix the resulting broken, where on earth ...... :D

Maybe not a proper full length hijab but some flair of Emirates (which they serve alcoholic beverages wearing it). But I am quite certain a hijab option will be made available to those who want it including for cabin crew.

Had always admire the iconic sanggul which is not so commonly seen now compared to previous years. So whenever I am in SIN, I will 'ogle' to heart's content the SQ girls sanggul. This siput nice shape, that one so high, this one so..... For me, sanggul + kebaya = perfect combo. I'm afraid both may be culled for a more modern/conservative look :(

There is still hope though... Farah Khan with a siput : http://keehuachee.blogspot.my/2015/07/part-2-happy-60th-birthday-dato-dr.html

to save cost they should have just hold a nationwide competition for the design of the new uniform rather than engaging well known designer which surely will cost millions.....as always in malaysia politics prevail

In this phone interview with CM, he firmly answered "No" when he was asked if the new uniform will incorporate the headscarf.

One of the reason to change their uniform for ground crew to cabin crew was there is too many colour combination.

A nationwide competition is probably the worst idea for the new uniform.

Like astronaut selection, gomen tender exercise or even election in this country, average joe the public could participate doesn't mean the winner will be from there.

change of uniform maybe the worst idea to be implemented given the current state of the airline, how do you know Farah Khan design will be the best?

its obvious..no reason to deny it

Wings of change

BY B.K. SIDHU

Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) seems to be refreshing itself just as it announced a modest profit of RM14mil for the first quarter of 2016 after a slew of internal restructuring initiatives that have streamlined the airline.

Next on its plate is the need to refresh its uniforms that stewardesses wear, which is part of the plan to improve customer service, fine-tune its processes and improve productivity.

But there is an uproar among people who disagree with the uniform change move, as for them removing the iconic kebaya will hurt the airline’s legacy and identity.

However, MAS’ outgoing chief executive officer Christoph Mueller (pic), in a phone interview with StarBizWeek, says the signature kebaya of the airline will stay.

“One thing the uniform change will not see is the kebaya, which is our signature uniform element.’’

He says the idea of the uniform change came from within the employees who want a new look and feel to be in sync with the other changes at the airline. As it is, MAS has too many uniform combinations that not just confuse the customer, but it is no longer cost effective to maintain so many designs.

Streamlining the design will help in passenger orientation.

Constant changes to offer the best-in-class is what global airlines are doing to lure customers to fly with them and MAS want to emulate that, so that it can regain its share of the market. But this will cost money. MAS product offerings have for years been said to be stale and a fresher and breezier look is preferred.

But the question is of timing, as many feel it is not right to spend money on uniforms when there are so many other things that need to be taken stock of at the airline, says an airline industry executive.

“Do they really need to spend so much money? Why don’t they use that money to reward their employees who could do with that motivation,’’ the executive adds.

MAS’ iconic kebaya is said to be designed by ITM students but the design of the new uniform will be done by fashion designer Farah Khan.

Meuller declined to say how much it would cost the airline to change the uniforms. All the changes MAS have embarked on are part and parcel of the airline trying to re-brand itself and bring it back to profitability.

I thought they had a subtle change in their uniform design recently?

The light blue kebayas? Was told by the Golden Lounge staff that the cabin crew refused to take on the new design, so whatever stock MH had was disbursed to the few, new Golden Lounge hosts instead.
