Iran Post-Sanction: Purchase of 118 Airbus, 40 ATR & 80 Boeing Jets Signed

Recommended Posts

  • Purchase includes new, used planes from A320, A340 families
  • A380s, Boeing 777s being considered to serve Iranian diaspora

Iran has agreed to buy 114 Airbus Group SE aircraft for state carrier Iran Air, Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi said Saturday before international sanctions were lifted on the Islamic Republic.

The deal includes a mix of new and used jets from the A320 family and the out-of-production A340s, an Iranian official said, asking not be identified because the details are private. The first deliveries are due as early as July, he said.

Iran has complied with the terms of an international agreement to curb its nuclear program, clearing the way for sanctions to end, the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency said Saturday. That will pave the way for Iran to purchase sorely needed aircraft to renew an aging fleet, feed domestic demand at its 50 airports in a nation of 80 million people and expand international flying.

“When the Iran sanctions are lifted, Airbus Group is ready to support Iranian civil and para-public transportation sector development in strict compliance with all international laws (U.S., EU and UN sanctions and embargoes),‎” a spokeswoman for Toulouse, France-based Airbus said in an e-mailed statement. Para-public transportation refers to helicopters used by police and border-control agencies.

Wide-Body Planes

Iran also is interested in Airbus wide-body planes including A350s and the A380 double-decker as it seeks to add destinations in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Europe to directly serve the Iranian population scattered there rather than connecting through Dubai or Istanbul hubs, the Iranian official said.

It may also be bad news for the ME3 airlines as many Iranians are flying on them now. With a revitalised Iranian airline industry, they can now fly direct from Iran.

Iran will need to build more infrastructure too. All these new aircraft will need airports to be expanded and good, safe air traffic control in Iranian airspace.

From the A320 to A380: Iran Air selects the full Airbus jetliner portfolio for its fleet modernisation

28 JANUARY 2016 HEADLINE NEWS
Iran Air’s agreement to acquire aircraft from all of Airbus’ in-production jetliner families will provide this Iranian flag carrier with a modern, highly efficient fleet capable of meeting its full air transport needs – from regional routes to high-density, long-haul operations.
Signed today in Paris, the agreement for 118 new aircraft spans from Airbus’ single-aisle A320 product line – involving both current engine option (CEO) and new engine option versions (NEO) – to the widebody A330ceo and A330neo, the A350 XWB and A380. Deliveries could start as early as this year.
Covered in the historic accord are: 21 A320ceo Family and 24 A320neo Family jetliners, 27 from the A330ceo Family, 18 A330-900neo aircraft, 16 A350-1000s and 12 A380s.
While phasing in this major new inventory, Iran Air will be supported by Airbus’ extensive resources in pilot and maintenance training, customer support and services. Iran Air also can benefit from its long experience with Airbus aircraft – and all the advantages of Airbus’ product line commonality – based on the carrier’s current fleet of 19 total A320ceo, A300 and A310 jetliners.
Additionally, the Iranian air transportation infrastructure will be enhanced through a separate agreement for development of the country’s air navigation services with assistance in airport and aircraft operations, harmonisation of its air regulations, training on the technical and academic levels, guidance in maintenance and repair operations, as well as industrial cooperation.
“I am very proud of all the Airbus teams who quickly mobilised to propose the agreements and make them happen,” said Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Brégier following today’s signing event in Paris, which involved Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and French President François Hollande.
Overall, Iran’s various airlines currently operate a combined 84 Airbus jetliners. In addition to those with Iran Air, the Iranian carriers are: ATA Airlines, Atrak Air, Iran Aseman Airlines, Mahan Air, Meraj Airlines, Qeshm Airlines, Taban Airline and Zagros Airlines.

The IR order will push A320neos family order mark passed 4, 500!!

Incredible! What a shocker order especially 12 A380!! John Leahy will need another order of 8 A380s to meet his KPI this year! A lot of A380 naysayers will now swallow their pride.

In summary, Iran today ordered to following aircraft:

- 21x A320ceo
- 24x A320neo
- 27x A330ceo
- 18x A330neo
- 16x A350-1000
- 12x A380-800
For a total of 118 jets.

Also, I bet there are more to come as there are many commercial airlines in Iran. Boeing also must be lobbying very hard now for order with similar scale. In addition, we may see an order for ATR as well since they are now flying quite a few in Iran.

The speed of this deal with Airbus is amazing. I am not sure about Boeing's fortune in this deal. The sanction in the first place was led by the US.

Remember the shopping scene in Pretty Woman? BIG MISTAKE, HUGE!!! It's payback time.

And obviously the Persian are not interested at all with our second-hand MH A380s.

I think the A380 fanboys should not celebrate prematurely. Part of the order might be fulfilled by leasing from Amedeo - that may be why they can get early delivery slots.

The IR order is a one off - it is sort of backdated due to sanctions - so it looks impressive. But if this order was split into chunks dating back 30 years, it would look like a normal airline fleet replacement order.

Iran has always been more inclined towards France more than the US, since the fall of the Shah, so this comes to no surprise to me...

I wonder what type of powerplants to be install on their new aircraft; currently their A300s is powered by GE engines

Unfortunately not much option they have. A380 has EA and RR. A350XWB has RR only. A320 CFM and PW. A330 has PW, RR and GE.

RR, EA and CFM have upper hand here. GE is at losing end...unfortunately.

Iran Air's order mix would appear to favour RR as they have the exclusive on the A330neo and the A350. It would make sense that they chose the RR for the A330ceo and A380 too.

As for the A320, it is more complicated since PW is having some problems with the GTF on the A320neo - so they may go with CFM.
