Usually 8XXX is extra flight, no?

Quoting from notification received

Dear Guest,

We would like to inform that a new flight number has been reassigned to our flight AK5118 departing Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) throughout 27 March 2016 – 31 May 2016.

Kindly take note of the new flight number as per below:

well... let's take it as a charted flight. Charted flights and extra flight do operate as 8xxx. Strange tho it shouldn't be peak season now until the next school holiday, so having 2 A333 to BKI is intriguing. The demand will be there no doubt, but also maybe AK's pilot are moving on? Hence the change of aircraft? I see whether I can dig out any info.

Mostly Flight Crew Manpower management. Sending 2 D7 flight daily you can free up 4 sets of A320 flightcrews to redeploy to flights that is short of manpower or cover standby or even posting to other stations that needed help.

On a positive side, it is nice to see pilots know our local landmarks. :)

On another note for those who are flying with AK you might check out AK5110, AK5121, AK5118 these two weeks i've noticed this flights offers flat bed on ak website, which means they're operated by A330-300.

As for y we're seeing them often it is also due to AK move to T1 and also probably related to this

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost airline AirAsia Bhd has entered into a US$4.93mil (RM20.54mil) aircraft wet lease agreement with its long-haul sister company AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) to mitigate operational constraints during peak travel season.

As part of the agreement, AirAsia will engage AAX’s services to wet lease one A330 aircraft to operate the Kuala Lumpur–Kota Kinabalu route from March 17 to June 12, 2016.

Seems that the flight diversions due to the bad weather yesterday made into the news. Some might be quite surprised that Malindo diverted to KCH when MYY, SDK and TWU could be alternatives. I believe Labuan was full. Anyway it was nice to listen to the ATC. Stress level definitely is up when weather is bad. I am sure the controller was getting his hands fulls with so many requests and queries coming in.
