burst tyre is kinda normal incident, since it's a small aircraft, the significance of a burst tyre is bigger compare to bigger jets, coz it's supported by lesser count of tyres.

MKM does seem to have a higher share of aircraft incidents than the other STOL airports in East Malaysia. A new airport is being built to handle ATRs and presumably jet operations should the need arise. The current airport runway lies parallel to the beach: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3927/15469152002_b5b143fe81_b.jpg

most likely due to the sea breeze.... and light aircrafts are more prone to wind shear & cross wind.

The new airport is Code 3C. ATR72 capable. But with sufficient land for them to upgrade to 4C with 737/A320 capability

That would be a good news as passengers, especially those from Peninsula Malaysia heading to Mukah now needs to land in Kuching or SIbu and take car ride to Mukah. And the road ain't the bet in condition.....:(

Some photos of the new airport, taken in March and April this year.

The progress as of March. Main runway will be Runway 15, 1500m x 30m. Lots of sand filling need to be done due to the removal of the unsuitable peat soil.

Wick drains installation at the main apron and main terminal. Enough to park 2 ATRs at any one time.
