Family jewels... hahaha...! :D I always though IJ did jack all... only thing memorable about him the cheesy "MH- Malaysian Hospitality" tagline and the 'snake' box... and it was gimmicky...

MH-Malaysian Hospitality was good IMHO. Has a lot of potential to be capitalized. The only fault is that the rest of the airline didn't fit the tagline.

Loss-making Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is set to undergo a complete overhaul as it is restructured into a new company, with a rebranding that will be unveiled next week and changes planned to its fleet and network strategies.

Christoph Mueller, who joined from Irish national carrier Aer Lingus, said in his first ever interview since taking over as chief executive on May 1 that the new company will be like a "start-up".

A new name and livery are on the cards for Malaysia Airlines, sources told Reuters.

"I'm hired to run the new company entirely on commercial terms and there's very little margin for error," said Mueller at the downtown Kuala Lumpur office of Malaysian state investor Khazanah, which took MAS private late last year as part of a RM6 billion restructuring.

"It's not a continuation of the old company in a new disguise, everything is new," said Mueller, who helped turn around carriers such as Aer Lingus, Belgium's Sabena, and Germany's Lufthansa.

Khazanah today said the chairman of audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia has been appointed to oversee the move of MAS's assets and liabilities to a new company, Malaysia Airlines Bhd, which is due to start operating by September.

The airline, which has seen successive years of losses, suffered huge damage to its brand after flight MH370, carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared in March last year, in what has become one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.

In July, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, and all 298 aboard were killed.

Apart from the brand, analysts say that the key to a revival will be the management's ability to reduce costs, deploy capacity more efficiently, create a profitable network that leverages on Kuala Lumpur's position as a regional hub, and partnerships with other airlines.

Job cuts

MAS, in the past, was also hindered by disagreements between the management and the unions, which opposed job cuts.

The government also interfered in the day-to-day running of the airline, and commercial contracts were often awarded to suppliers with political connections.

MAS has announced plans to lay off about a third of its 20,000 work-force, expected in the coming week, and will also shrink its capacity this year.

Mueller confirmed that the carrier has been trying to sell two of its A380s and will likely have fewer planes overall, but added that the new company will keep all of its current types of aircraft including the Airbus A330s, Boeing 777-200s and 737-800s.

Competition has been intense at home, where low-cost carrier AirAsia has taken much of the short-haul market from MAS and affiliate AirAsia X has provided stiff competition in the medium and long-haul markets.

The airline's costs are 20 percent above its rivals and Mueller said it will take three years to close that gap and return to profitability.

"We are not without our weapons. It's doable, and it depends on the vigour in which we pursue the cost reduction," he said. – Reuters, May 25, 2015.

CM aka The Terminator :

Asked whether he has decided on who will be on his management team, Mueller said: “Partly yes, and partly no ... let me tell you there are lots of vacancies in the management ranks so we will start the new company with a lot of open positions. We will start advertising next week, internally and externally. In some areas we have enough talent.”

We don’t have jobs for everyone, says MAS boss
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/we-dont-have-jobs-for-everyone-says-mas-boss

He said it was important for staff who were being released to be given an explanation and not seen as underperformers.

“That for me is the responsibility of management. To design a process so these people won’t lose their dignity,” he told The Star.

Fair enough I guess, unless you're one of those being told to leave ......

Wonder what sort of explanation Malaysian style is forthcoming ?

"Boss kata tak nak lagi ......" ?!

How about Der Fuhrer? Despite its negative connotation with Hitler it's still a valid German word for leader...

ja - you are correct, but the preferred word these days is Leiter :D

That must be Raja Nordiana. I am so sure.

As a Malaysian and a Melayu, I am so embarassed that all those Ahmad Jauhari, Tengku Azmil etc failed to expose this bicycle allowance fiasco when sitting at the helm for years. Makan gaji buta ke tidur on the job? Look at what CM has exposed on his 29th day at the job. Totally unacceptable!

Looking forward for more juicy unacceptable expose' from this German.

“We have to replace this type of bad practice with more flat salaries so we can incentivise people with more money if they finish the work on time, which I think is more normal,” he added.

I hope this won't result in the mx guys cutting corners in doing maintenance just to finish early/on time

I was thinking of some isolated post where you have to bicycle to airport - mana yer? Otherwise how to justify? Despite having received winter clothing allowance during travel, I personally think this is lavish and should be abolished.

When I was in civil service, bicycle allowance was for the lowest ranking civil servant like PRA (pembantu rendah awam) and PAR (pembantu am rendah). I was amused when I first heard of it but was told it was since long time ago when office boys used bicycles to run errands like mail letters at the post office. Shocking that MAS also has it! For what I wonder?

When I was working in Malaysia circa 2002-2005, the company I worked with (a VERY large GLC now known with the initial SD) has an allowance called "Toddy Allowance".

*Toddy = alcoholic beverages (as in "mabuk minum todi") for estate workers.

My point is, some of these allowances may be legitimate at the time of its introduction (probably back in 1950s for SD's toddy or 1970s for MH's bicycle) but the management including audit failed ensure whether it is still relevant at current time and continue to pay without checking.

I suppose the bicycle allowance is for Engineering staff - I've seen them using bicycles to move about the hangars at KLIA. As for overtime, it's not surprising given how low the base pay is especially for the graded staff.

If it's part of the collective agreement then it will be hard to eradicate such allowances without mutual agreement. You know how strong MASEU was.

Interestingly, SD is a shariah compliant counter at KLSE; .....

Maybe the relevant auditors did not turun padang sufficiently ?! :)

O/T - who goes about verifying all these compliances anyway ? Must be a heck of a tedious task if one intend to do a good job of it

In addition, it is a bureaucratic nightmare to eliminate it - probably need multilayer, multi department, multi ministry approval - thanks again to British legacy.

So only a clean sheet statutory company like MAB can undertake this massive restructuring.
