MH and CI Files for Code-Sharing Approval for MY-US

Recommended Posts

CI and MH filed with the USDOT for code-sharing services between KUL and HNL, SFO, LAX and JFK using CI's metal across the Pacific beginning NS2015 schedule.

Odd that they chose CI instead of CX considering at some point, MH actually placed its code on CX TPAC services briefly before it was removed (and the obvious fact that CX is a OW member and there are 8 CX/MH flights between KUL and HKG compared to 3 MH/CI flights between KUL and TPE).

Subject to government approval, this will be MH's third code-sharing agreement to the US after JL and AA.

Are you kidding me? CI? Not to mention CI is not a OW member and the transit in TPE? where MH is using B738 to fly the long 5 hours route?

Interesting to know how the application process works for a code sharing between two airlines and this could be a sign of MH and Skyteam working closely again. :search: :search: :search:

Still wonder what actually happened to the MH and CX code share to the U.S.A.

Malaysia Airlines / ETIHAD Expands Codeshare Service from March 2015

Malaysia Airlines starting today (02MAR15) expands codeshare partnership with ETIHAD, including service to Europe. MH code is now being displayed on following ETIHAD service:

Abu Dhabi Dusseldorf

Abu Dhabi Frankfurt

Abu Dhabi Munich

Abu Dhabi Muscat

Code sharing with non alliance members defy the spirit of alliances. Doubt CX or ba are happy. If the trend continue, it won't be a surprise mh will be asked to leave ow.

Similar was practiced with UA many years ago, hence ba didn't trust mh.

CX has always been a loner in Oneworld compared to other Oneworld carriers. Same goes to SQ who has extensive code-share service with non-Star Alliance airlines. Even BA long time partner QF is now in bed with EK, which is probably the most hated airline by European airlines.

With more and more airlines already in one of the big 3 alliance signing an extensive code-share service with airlines not in the same alliance, I do see this trend to continue for the foreseeable future,

Why should MH be kicked out when QF is sleeping with the enemy (EK) & is deep in conflict with CX over Jetstar HK?

The objectives of joining alliances are to contribute own network to the alliances and to make use of alliances network. Joining ow need to pay joining fee and yearly subscription, if MH find code share with non alliance is more beneficial, MH should consider withdraw from OW.

On QF with EK, actually it could benefit MH, if MH could provide BA with connection to various Aussie And NZ cities from KUL.

MAS is not alone in this. Look at CX, they don't work closely with any Oneworld carriers but it doesn't mean they should withdraw from the alliance. Same goes to SQ who works more closely to non-Star carriers such as VX and B6 rather than fellow Star Alliance partner UA.

When one join an alliance or brotherhood, need to sign agreement or vow. If another member deviate from the alliance doesn't means everyone else should else the alliance is only worth the paper it is written on.

Without taking strategic view is a reason why most Malaysian jv with foreign partners failed at the end.

An alliance is not a brotherhood. It's a business arrangement & if another party can offer a niche that complements your alliance arrangement you'd be daft not to take it just because that party is not in the alliance.

Bruce Ashby, CEO of oneworld don't mind, so why should we? http://www.ausbt.com.au/oneworld-ceo-why-i-support-the-qantas-emirates-alliance

For Bruce Ashby to keep the alliance intact, he doesn't has much choice.

Joining an alliances is about contributing to and synergize the alliances. If every member disregard the alliances when and where it see fit, the alliances will be weaken.

Either ow will be weaken or ow will take on more members to compensate.

Maybe MH wanted to stop flying to TPE and leave that to CI, BR and D7.

Maybe new CEO has identified that the only way for MH to cease bleeding red ink, plus maybe turn in a profit as an added bonus, is for it to stop flying altogether and go virtual instead ? :D

Heck, can you imagine the fabulous yields on BKI-KUL and KCH-KUL alone should AK be tasked with the flying and all MH does is help sell tickets

BKI - TPE is still possible to maintain as the other airline plying this route is AK. There is no Taiwanese based airlines flying here. Even charters like GE and CI has virtually stopped for the last few years.

On the topic of selling planes, turning into a virtual airlines and just sells tickets, take a look at ManX2. I came across this airline in Season 14 Air Crash Investigation.

The Taiwanese are still very much apprehensive about going to KK for tourism, no thanks to the kidnappings. MH is constantly dumping fares to keep the loads (somewhat) healthy.

Not really. MAS hardly do a discount on BKI-TPE vv. Last year after MH17 was shot down, MAS offered a return ticket between BKI-TPE for less than RM1,000 for the first time (the promo fare was RM599). Before that the promo fare was always RM1,000 nett, hardly competitive as CX/KA promo fare for a return ticket between BKI-TPE is around RM870 all inclusive.

And last year before the Suluk incident in the Sabah East Coast, there were multiple extra MAS flights as well as charter flights operated by China Airlines A330-300X during Chinese New Year period. The load suffered mildly after the kidnapping of a Taiwanese tourist. Ultimately it was the loss of MH370 and MH17 that gave a huge blow to the tourism industry in Sabah,

Anyway, if you go to the city centre now at night. You can see many Mainland Chinese tourists again. We didn't not get as many charter flights from Mainland China during this year's CNY compared to last year's CNY but the demand is definitely picking up again.
